Thoroughbred Charities Of America To Host Bash At The Breeders’ Cup Fundraiser

Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) will host Bash at the Breeders' Cup on Friday, Nov. 5 at the Hilton in Del Mar. An outdoor event featuring signature cocktails, music, hors d'oeuvres, and a live auction of racing memorabilia and experiences, Bash at the Breeders' Cup is a fundraiser for TCA. The Hilton San Diego/Del Mar is directly across the street from the racetrack. Tickets are available here.

“Bash at the Breeders' Cup has become a significant fundraiser for TCA and, after a hiatus last year, we're thrilled to return to Del Mar,” said Erin Crady, executive director of TCA. “We're looking forward to welcoming guests back to this fun event all while raising money for our 2022 approved grant recipients that work to provide Thoroughbred aftercare and offer health and human services to backstretch and farm workers.”

Bash at the Breeders' Cup will feature a live auction including two Del Mar Racing packages, a halter worn by Letruska, a racing saddle signed by numerous jockeys including Johnny Velazquez, Mike Smith, Flavien Prat, and Jose Ortiz, a 2022 Whitney Stakes racing package, and much more.

Bash at the Breeders' Cup is generously sponsored by Herringswell Stables, Blackstone Farm, Abbondanza Racing, Radley Equine, New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, Candy Meadows Farm, Tito's Vodka, Maker's Mark, and Jackson Family Wines. Media sponsors include the BloodHorse, TDN, Paulick Report, and the Horse Racing Radio Network.

Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) was formed in 1990 to raise and distribute funds to charities in the Thoroughbred industry that provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers, by supporting qualified repurposing and retirement organizations and by helping the people who care for them. In 2021, TCA granted over $775,000 to 69 approved charities working within Thoroughbred retraining, rehoming and retirement; backstretch and farm worker services, research and equine-assisted therapy. During the last three decades, TCA has granted over $25 million to more than 200 charities that successfully meet the criteria set forth in its annual grant application. TCA administers the Horses First Fund, founded by LNJ Foxwoods in 2016, to assist Thoroughbreds in need of emergency aid. TCA manages Cómo, a mobile app founded by Godolphin, that connects racing industry employees to the vital services they need through a network of racetrack chaplains and Thoroughbred industry organizations. TCA is the charitable arm of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA).

Chris Husbands, Julie Mathes Take Leading Rider, Trainer Titles At Fort Erie Race Track

The falling rain could not keep the fans away on closing day of the 2021 racing season at Fort Erie Race Track. However, for the safety of both horses and riders, the 39th and final day of the meet was cut short due to inclement weather.

“Unfortunately, due to the continuous rainfall throughout the day we could not carry out the remainder of the card,” said Drew Cady, the general manager for the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium (FELRC). “Despite our shortened card today, we still had a tremendous season, one in which we were able to welcome back fans who missed out on the 2020 racing season due to COVID-19 restrictions.”

The leading rider at this year's meet, Chris Husbands scored 52 wins during the 124th racing season at the border oval. Some of those victories included back-to-back wins with Fort fan-favourite Pepperoni (Jul. 26 /Aug. 31) as well as Wheat King (Jun. 22/29). Husbands also rode Red Equinox to victory in the Rondeau Bay Stakes on Prince of Wales Day, Sept. 14.

“I had a really good start and I just continued on that momentum. I was blessed to ride good horses. The owners and trainers gave me good horses, which I really appreciated. Thanks to all the owners and trainers who gave me a shot and the opportunity,” said Husbands.

Trainer Julie Mathes secured the title of leading trainer for a second year in a row. During the 2021 season, Mathes won 23 races. On yesterday's card she secured a victory with Team Win (in race nine) with jockey Omar Moreno aboard. In 2020, Mathes secured 29 wins. Bruno Schickedanz secured 16 wins, giving him the title of top owner at the border oval this year.

While yesterday's ten-race card saw over a million in wagering, the shortened card on Tuesday saw close to $400,000 in wagering. In total, Fort Erie had $28.6 million in wagering for 2021.

With this racing season in the books, the border oval looks ahead to next year's meet and has applied for 40 race days, operating on mostly Mondays and Tuesdays, beginning May 31 through to October 18.

‘Very Special’ Summer Sunday Headlines Friday’s Eternal Search At Woodbine

Summer Sunday, a six-year-old daughter of Silent Name (JPN), chases her ninth career stakes score in the $100,000 Eternal Search Presented by HBPA Ontario, Friday at Woodbine.

Trained by Stuart Simon for owners Anne and William Scott, Summer Sunday arrives at the 7 ½-furlong Inner Turf event for Ontario-sired fillies and mares, three-year-olds and up, in solid form, having gone 1-2-0 in her past three starts.

After a runner-up effort in July in the Ballade Stakes to kick off her current campaign, the bay, bred by Trinity West Stables Ltd., won the Zadracarta Stakes on September 10.

She returned $10 for the win.

Canada's champion female sprinter in 2019 heads into the Eternal Search off a second-place performance in the Grade 3 Ontario Fashion Stakes on October 3.

“She's doing really well,” offered Simon. “She just continues to be a very special horse for us.”

The conditioner shared the game plan for Summer Sunday, who sports a 10-3-1 mark from 20 starts.

“She's a little over $900,000 Canadian in earnings. She's going to run this time and one more time after that, if all goes well, and if she wins one and runs second in the other, she would break the million-dollar mark or be right on it. That would be nice to do that with her.”

After those races, Summer Sunday will stamp her passport and head to Ireland.

“She's going to be a broodmare and she's going to have a forever home with Mr. Scott's relative in Ireland. So, all being well with her, knock on wood, she'll race on Friday and again on December 4 (La Prevoyante Stakes), then she'll be retired. It's very nice to know that she's going to a place where she'll be well looked after for the rest of her days.”

Summer Sunday launched her career with a win on July 15, 2017, going on to net the natural hat trick to complete her rookie season with a perfect three-for-three mark, which included victories in the Nandi and Muskoka Stakes.

Simon, who has 835 career wins, continues to marvel at the mare's versatile ways.

“I didn't raise her, but I did buy her as a yearling, and I've had her for her whole career. Not taking anything away from all of the great horses that have been here, but most of them are really good at one thing, probably, whether it's running short or running long, turf or synthetic.

“She has won stakes races from five furlongs up to a mile-and-a-sixteenth on all three surfaces at Woodbine. She's won a five-furlong race on the Inner Turf, she's won multiple graded stakes on the main track, and she's won a graded stakes race on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, as well as a two-turn Open stakes race on the synthetic. Not many of the past champions and good horses here have that kind of diversity.”

The Eternal Search is slated as race seven. First race post time is 4:45 p.m. Fans can also watch and wager on all the action via HPIbet.com or the Dark Horse Bets app.
