Easy Money in Chandelier

'TDN Rising Star' Ain't Easy (f, 2, Into Mischief–Ameristralia {Aus}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) put on a show to remain unbeaten while punching her ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GII Chandelier S. at Santa Anita.

Electric Ride (Daredevil), a runaway debut winner at Del Mar Aug. 28, was second; second out Del Mar maiden winner Desert Dawn (Cupid) was third. Heavily favored GI TVG Del Mar Debutante S. heroine Grace Adler (Curlin) never factored while fifth.

Ain't Easy, a sharp 5 1/4-length debut winner going 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 21, raced in a joint- second under a snug hold on the inside rounding the clubhouse turn in this two-turn debut. Joel Rosario sent her through an inviting opening along the inside to challenge for command at the half-mile marker. The 7-2 chance began to let it out a notch a quarter of a mile from home and wasn't for catching from there, scoring by 4 3/4 good-looking lengths.

“She acted very professional, sitting behind horses,” said winning trainer Phil D'Amato, who also saddled the third-place finisher. “When Joel [Rosario] wanted to, she came up the inside, which I like to see with a young horse. She just looked like she was having fun in the stretch. I think it set up perfect. A good two-turn experience, confidence booster, an easy win, where it didn't look like she was taxed too much, so I like everything I saw right now.”

Ain't Easy becomes the 100th stakes winner/45th graded winner for her all-conquering sire Into Mischief. The winner's dam–Group 3-placed sprinting on the lawn in Australia and a full-sister to Japanese MGSW Fiano Romano (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})–is also responsible for a colt by Bolt d'Oro of 2020 and a filly by Mendelssohn of this year. She was bred back to Vino Rosso. Ain't Easy's second dam Heart Ashley (Lion Heart) was a two-time Grade III winner and brought $500,000 from James Bester, agent, at the 2010 KEENOV sale. This is also the female family of GI Cold Cup at Santa Anita S. winner and young sire Cupid (Tapit).

Gulfstream Park Suspends Five Trainers For Violating Clenbuterol Policy

Gulfstream Park has suspended five trainers for violating the Hallandale Beach, Fla., house rules concerning use of the bronchodilator clenbuterol. The track announced the suspensions after conducting out-of-competition tests, using both blood and hair samples, in 10 different barns – with five of the 10 trainers returning clean tests. A total of 12 horses from the five suspended trainers tested positive for the drug that is designed to treat airway obstruction but can have anabolic steroidal effects.

Suspended were Georgina Baxter, Rohan Crichton, Daniel Pita, Peter Walder and Gilberto Zerpa. The suspensions range from 10 to 40 days depending on the number of violations a trainer and went into effect Oct. 1. Gulfstream did not identify the length of each trainer's suspension. The trainers also have been fined $1,000 per violation, with the money going directly to support Thoroughbred aftercare initiatives.

Gulfstream Park enacted the restriction on clenbuterol as a house rule at the beginning of the 2019/2020 championship meet to further address and implement improved safety, transparency and accountability standards.

“As we have said before, individuals who do not embrace the rules and safety measures that put horse and rider safety above all else will have no place at any 1/ST racetrack,” said Aidan Butler, chief operating officer, 1/ST Racing, which owns Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita, Pimlico, Laurel Park, and Golden Gate Fields.  “At 1/ST we are committed to achieving the highest standard of horse care and safety. We expect that the stakeholders who race and train at our facilities share in that commitment.”

Horses entered by the suspended trainers will be scratched and they will not be permitted to enter any horse they train for any race at 1/ST Racing venues until the completion of the suspension.

On Oct. 1, six horses were listed as stewards scratches, including three trained by Crichton, two by Baxter, and one by Walder.

To return to racing, the horses must also submit to follow up testing and have clean blood and urine samples. The twelve affected horses will be permitted to train as a part of their daily care and exercise routines.

Because of the absence of a racing commission and deregulation imposed by former Gov. Rick Scott, many of the rules that govern Florida racing are done by the racetracks in the way of house rules. It isn't clear if suspensions resulting from violation of house rules are automatically recognized by other racing states. Gulfstream Park did not indicate whether a suspended trainer's horses (those that did not test positive) would be allowed to race under the name of another trainer during the period of suspension.

Additional barns have been tested, with results pending.

Santana Mile to be Renamed for Recently Retired Paddock Captain John Shear

On the day Santa Anita unveiled a plaque commemorating six decades of dedicated service to its recently retired 100-year-old Paddock Captain John Shear, it was announced that the Santana Mile S. has been renamed in his honor as the John Shear Mile S.

For older horses, the $75,000 John Shear Mile will be held Sunday, Apr. 10.

Employed by Santa Anita since 1961, Shear, who retired this past June, gained national recognition when on Mar. 12, 2011, he sustained life threatening injuries as he threw himself between an on-rushing loose horse and a 5-year-old girl just outside Santa Anita's Seabiscuit Walking Ring.

“John Shear is a legend among all of us here at Santa Anita, fans, jockeys, horsemen and employees,” said Chris Merz, Santa Anita's Director of Racing and Racing Secretary. “We are proud to rename this race in his honor and to help share his legacy of kindness, compassion and dedication to the well being of our sport with many generations of future racegoers.”
