Bell’s The One Outclasses Them in TCA

Bell's the One stamped her ticket to the Breeders' Cup with a gritty score in the TCA at Keeneland Saturday. Heavily favored here, the bay trailed the field through a :21.57 opening quarter. Making an eye-catching move on the backstretch, she launched a five-wide bid turning for home to put herself in contention and fought her way past her foes in mid-stretch, edging clear to score.

“She's one of the best mares, if not the best horse, I've ever had,” trainer Neil Pessin said. “The only thing I regret with her is she never gets the respect she deserves. Even in this race, people weren't even picking her on top, which made absolutely zero sense to me.”

As for the Breeders' Cup, the conditioner said, “It will still depend on how she comes out of it. The plane reservations are still tough, the way they've got it–I know it's the best they can do–but we'll try to make a go of it if she comes out of it well.”

“When I ride her, I just let her gather her feet underneath her and be comfortable wherever she needs to be,” winning pilot Corey Lanerie said. “Today I actually tried to keep her a little closer because I was afraid if they got away from me I wouldn't be able to make up the ground, going six furlongs, and she gives everything she's got every time. I could tell from about the five-sixteenths pole, I'm in contention where, if she gives me her kick, I'm going to catch them. She has the fastest turn of foot [of any horse] I've ever been on.”

Winner of last year's GI Derby City Distaff, Bell's the One was a well-beaten third in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint S. in her next start. Dead-heating for second when making her seasonal bow in this venue's GI Madison S. Apr. 3, she was fourth when attempting to defend her Derby City title May 1 and returned to winning ways in Churchill's Roxelana S. June 19. The 5-year-old followed suit with a narrow score in Saratoga's GII Honorable Miss H. July 28 and was a close second in the Open Mind S. back beneath the Twin Spires last out Sept. 18. Bell's the One was originally scheduled to train up to the Breeders' Cup after that victory, but connections called an audible and sent her to the TCA for one more race in her home state before making the trek to Del Mar.

Pedigree Notes:

Bell's the One's dam Street Mate, a $35,000 KEENOV purchase in 2012, is a half-sister to GSW & GISP Tap Day (Pleasant Tap). Her first foal was SP Running Mate, who was retained by owner/breeder Bret Jones. The 13-year-old mare is also the dam of an unraced juvenile filly named Skipper Sue (Cairo Prince), a $400,000 KEESEP purchase by Rob Masiello, and a weanling filly by Collected. She was bred back to Not This Time.

Rockemperor Gets First Graded Stakes Win In G1 Joe Hirsch

Sometimes even when Chad Brown's horses aren't favorites in a graded stakes on the turf, they still find the winner's circle. Rockemperor (IRE) entered the starting gate for the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic with only one win in 2021 and zero wins in a stakes, but changed all of that with his upset victory at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Breaking from post four, Rockemperor was next to last of seven, with only Gufo behind him early in the 1 1/2-mile stakes. Channel Maker set the pace, running on the lead until the race's final turn, as Arklow passed him with both Gufo and Rockemperor going to the far outside to pass horses and bid for the lead. Gufo got there first, coming into the stretch with a short lead, but began to tire in the straightaway. Instead, Rockemperor found running room toward the center of the track, passing Gufo and drawing away to a two-length lead. Serve the King was second and Gufo held on to finish third. The final time for the 1 1/2-mile G1 Joe Hirsch was 2:25.61.

Rockemperor paid $33.20, $10.80, and $5.40. Serve the King paid $13.00 and $6.40. Gufo paid $2.60. Find this race's chart here.

Bred in Ireland by Haras du Mezeray, Rockemperor is by Group 1 winner Holy Roman Emperor out of the Muhtathir mare Motivation. He is owned by Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, Wonder Stables, Michael Kisber, and Michael Caruso. The 5-year-old horse was consigned by Mocklershill at the 2018 Arqana May Two-Year-Old Breeze-Up Sale and sold to Simone Brogi for $14,330. With his win in the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, Rockemperor has two wins in six starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 20-4-5-6 and career earnings of $914,404.

Rockemperor Leads Home Longshot Chad-zacta in Joe Hirsch

Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) led home one  of the better-paying Chad Brown-trained exactas in recent memory in Saturday's GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. The French Group 3-placed runner was fifth as the favorite in this race last year after a close second in the GI Manhattan S. to stablemate Instilled Regard (Arch) in July and a third to fellow Brown pupil Digital Age (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic S. at Churchill that September.

He kicked off this season with a third in the GII Fort Marcy S. May 1 behind yet another stablemate, and was fifth to Brown's highly regarded Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the local GI Resorts World Casino Manhattan S. June 5. The bay got a chance to build some confidence with an easy optional claiming tally here June 26, and was second to re-opposing Cross Border (English Channel) in the GII Bowling Green S. at the Spa July 31 before settling for fourth behind race favorite Gufo (Declaration of War) in the GI Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer S. upstate Aug. 28.

Dismissed at 15-1 while shedding blinkers for the first time since the Fort Marcy, Rockemperor had only race favorite Gufo beaten as they raced under the line for the first time. He was still patiently ridden after a mile in 1:38.62 and as Gufo went for what would prove a premature run. Rockemperor swept past foes widest leaving the home bend, put away the leg-weary Gufo and the rest of his rivals in upper stretch and poured it on from there to score by two lengths. Lightly raced Serve the King (GB) (Kingman {GB}) rallied into second over Gufo. The all-Brown exacta paid $178.50 for $2.

“I think he's the type of horse that's always keen going a long distance and is always pulling right away. I think the key is [Brown] told me he wanted to take off the blinkers,” winning pilot Javier Castellano said. “He's a funny horse because if you leave him too far back, he doesn't come. I think he was in the right place at the right time today. I think he was behind and it felt they went pretty quick, and he relaxed so well. When Gufo moved it gave me the opportunity to get to following. It was a key decision to get to win the race.”

This was the third Joe Hirsch win for Brown, who noted that Rockemperor was a supplemental entry into Saturday's event.

“Serve the King was always running here and Rockemperor was entered in an allowance race the other day and the race didn't go. I have to give credit to [co-owner] Sol Kumin, he was the first one to text me and say, 'Shouldn't we think about the Joe Hirsch?' Why not? He was doing really good and I've been really impressed with the horse in the morning. He's always a good work horse.”

Brown continued, “We put a different bit in his mouth for a little more control. He got a little rank on us lately. For a horse that was always lazy the first half of his career, I couldn't really get him to kick like he showed in his works. He was one paced. I put blinkers on him to get him motivated and warm him up in the post parade–everything you do to try and put a horse more in the game. It came to a boiling point in the last race because he overcompensated and was way out of control with [jockey] Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] and bothered [stablemate] Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}) in the race.”

As for a potential start, or two, in the GI Breeders ' Cup Turf next month, Brown said, “Both horses–you'd have to look at it. We'll see how the figures come back, but I'm not going to make any decisions right now. Serve the King ran second and to be fair he had a lot of trouble in the stretch. He looked like he would've had a chance to win as well. They would have been very close at the wire if he'd had a better trip.”

Brown-trained mares would run 1-2 in Keeneland's GI First Lady S. about an hour after the Joe Hirsch.
