Slipstream Punches Ticket to BC in Belmont’s Futurity

Jump Sucker Stable's Slipstream backed up a sharp maiden victory earlier in the meet with a score in the GIII Futurity S. Sunday at Belmont, a Win and You're In qualifier for the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Debuting locally over six furlongs on grass, the $170,000 Keeneland September purchase ran an even fifth after hitting the gate at the start, then faced more early trouble in a Saratoga off-the-turfer July 30 before finishing a distant third. Cruising to a 5 1/4-length graduation going seven panels here Sept. 18, the dark bay was made the second choice here and was checked several times in the opening furlong to be relegated to last behind a :22.39 quarter. Advancing while saving ground on the turn, he awaited room in early stretch, squeezed through at the rail at the furlong grounds, tipped into the two path soon after and overhauled pace-dueling longshot Run Curtis Run in deep stretch to prevail. Even-money favorite Chi Town Lady (Verrazano) was a no-factor sixth.

“I'm very happy,” said winning trainer Christophe Clement. “He belongs to Jump Sucker–a partnership that belongs to [NYRA board member] Stephen Duncker and three of his friends. I haven't had a really good horse for them since Governor Malibu a few years ago. I thought he would be a bit closer to the pace, but I train and let Joel [Rosario] ride. He rides better than I do and I train better than he does. He said he got really slammed coming out the gate. Otherwise, I thought he was cruising and going well. I love the way he finished. He was very impressive when he broke his maiden here last time.”

Clement also said that his preference is to run in the one-mile GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf despite now having a fees-paid berth to the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

“If it's up to me, yes. We have to see how he comes out of it and be sure the owners are on board and that everything goes well. I'd like to go [Juvenile Turf Sprint] with Derrynane, who won [the Woodbine Cares] at Woodbine last month. I still don't know if they'll invite her or not. I prefer six [furlongs] going into a race that's a mile at Del Mar on firm than a mile and a sixteenth and drop back to a mile. I always like when you go to California, the idea of pushing that sprinter speed going six or seven furlongs to a mile.”

With the victory, Slipstream becomes the 211th stakes winner and 96th graded stakes winner for WinStar's 24-year-old stalwart More Than Ready. He is the second foal to race out of his stakes-placed dam, following Too Sexy (Quality Road), who scored in an allowance/optional claimer with a career-high 89 Beyer at Belmont Sept. 25. His second dam was an Illinois-bred stakes winner. Cake Baby, a $110,000 Keeneland November pickup by McKenzie Bloodstock in 2016, produced a colt by Catalina Cruiser this term before being bred to Game Winner.

Adayar Possible For QIPCO Champion S.

Godolphin's G1 Cazoo Derby and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) might be seen once more this season in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot on Oct. 16. Fourth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after leading into the home straight, the bay has been pleasing trainer Charlie Appleby since his run in Paris.

“He will be left in the Champion S. tomorrow, for the simple reason at the moment he has come out of the Arc well,” Appleby told Racing TV's Luck On Sunday. “Should connections ask me next week how the horse is, and I say 'jumping around' and they say 'where can we go?', I'd look a bit daft saying I'd taken him out of the Champion S. on the Monday.

“He will stay in tomorrow. We've an open book and should connections want to run him again and I can't at that time give a negative for not to run him, then the Champion S. will be looked at.”

Appleby also provided an update on G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who will run in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. The G3 Craven S. hero was last seen running third in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 24. Godolphin stablemate and Group 3 winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will also be in action on QIPCO Champions Day, but in the G1 Champions Sprint.

“The way the weather forecast is potentially looking, Master Of The Seas will run in the QEII and Creative Force will head to the Champions Sprint. Two handy horses,” he said. “Creative Force is learning how to sprint now. We've seen what he can do over seven. He's been competitive at six and he's still learning. As we all know, dropping back into sprinting divisions at that level it takes a bit of getting the hang of, but he's getting there and he'll go into the weekend a big player.

“Master Of The Seas has definitely come on for that run in the Joel and we're looking forward to him.”

Special Forces Surprises In Durham Cup At Woodbine

After losing the 2019 edition of the Grade 3 Durham Cup by a nose, Special Forces made his 2021 try a winning one, taking the 1 1/16-mile stakes by a half-length over 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Under jockey Justin Stein, Special Forces ran last of five early, with Tap It to Win taking the lead in the race's opening strides. Stein kept the 6-year-old gelding on the outside of Sir Winston, waiting until the far turn to swing three-wide as Tap It to Win and Halo Again battled for the lead. In the stretch, the two leaders continued to duel, Halo Again taking over as Tap It to Win tired, with Mighty Heart, Sir Winston, and Special Forces bunched up to their outside. Stein sent Special Forces running up on Halo Again's outside in the final furlong, with Sir Winson trying to split them to bid for the lead.

When Halo Again lugged in slightly, bumping Sir Winston, Special Forces was able to pull ahead to hit the wire in front. Halo Again, Mighty Heart, and Tap It to Win rounded out the field. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:42.36 over the Woodbine all-weather course.

The inquiry sign went up after the contact between Halo Again and Sir Winson. Stewards made no change to the order of finish.

Special Forces paid $15.60, $4.80, and $4.10. Sir Winston paid $3.20 and $3.10. Halo Again paid $5.10.

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Carrie Brogden, and Craig Brogden, Special Forces is by Candy Ride (ARG) out of the Unbridled's Song mare Special Me. He is co-owned by Soli Mehta and trainer Kevin Attard. Special Forces was consigned by Select Sales and sold to Global Thoroughbreds for $220,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The G3 Durham Cup is the gelding's first win of 2021, for a lifetime record of six wins in 20 starts.

Ubettabelieveit To Mickley Stud

Richard Kent's Mickley Stud will welcome the G2 Flying Childers S. winner Ubettabelieveit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Ladylishandra {Ire}, by Mujadil) to its stallion ranks for the 2022 season.

Trained by Nigel Tinkler for owner Martin Webb, Ubettabelieveit won on his second start at two and followed that up with victory in the Listed National S. at Sandown. Dropping back to five furlongs after failing to see out the six in the G2 Gimcrack S., he then won the Flying Childers in a tight finish with subsequent Group 2 winner Sacred (Blame). He rounded off his productive juvenile campaign by finishing third in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf over 5½ furlongs at Keeneland.

“I'm delighted that Mickley Stud is to stand Ubettabelieveit as he's a really good-looking individual and son of the highly successful sire Kodiac, whose sons are proving to be sire sons as well,” said Richard Kent. “Kodi Bear (Ire), Adaay (Ire), Prince of Lir (Ire) and Coulsty (Ire) have all sired Group-winning 2-year-olds, and Ardad (Ire), who also won the Flying Childers Stakes, has sired the Middle Park and Prix Morny winner Perfect Power (Ire) from his first crop of impressive 2-year-old winners this season.”

He continued, “I'm grateful to Martin Webb and Nigel Tinkler for giving me the opportunity to acquire Ubettabelieveit and am also grateful that they are retaining shares in him and will be supporting him. We will be making shares available to breeders and will be announcing further details regarding his nomination fee after the conclusion of the October Yearling Sales.”

Trainer Nigel Tinkler added, “Ubettabelieveit is one of the fastest horses that I have trained and completely sound in every way. His attitude was completely professional and all he wanted to do was please you.”

Bred at Ringfort Stud by Derek and Gay Veitch, Ubettabelieveit is out of the juvenile winner Ladylishandra (Ire), herself a daughter of Flying Childers S. winner Mujadil and now the dam of four black-type winners. These include the dual Group 3 winner Tropical Paradise (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) and listed Rothesay S. winner Shenanigans (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}). Ubettabelieveit shares his fourth dam Dinner Partner (Tom Fool) with Noverre (Rahy), and she also features as the grandam of July Cup winner Ajdal (Northern Dancer).

Sold for 50,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale to Roger Marley and John Cullinan of Church Farm and Horse Park Stud, Ubettabelieveit was originally catalogued for the Goffs UK Breeze-up Sale but was sold privately to Tinkler when the 2020 breeze-up season was delayed by the Covid-enforced lockdown.
