Royal Flag Navigates One Turn With Aplomb In Beldame

After running her last nine starts around two turns, Royal Flag had no trouble handling the wide, sweeping lone turn of the famed Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., taking the Grade 2 by 4 1/4 lengths over 2020 winner Horologist.

Under jockey Joel Rosario, Royal Flag took up positon toward the rear of the field of seven early, as Horologist led the field through fractions of :23.97 for the quarter-mile and :48.54 for the half-mile. Around the turn, Zaajel and Royal Flag went wide around Horologist in the lead on the rail and Miss Marissa just behind her in second. Three-wide into the stretch, Royal Flag made her move in the straight, picking off Zaajel, then Miss Marissa, and Horologist to take the lead and win. Gold Spirit passed Zaajel late to take over fourth.

The final time for the 1 1/8 miles over the good track was 1:50.02.

Royal Flag paid $3.40, $2.50, and $2.10. Horologist paid $2.90 and $2.70. Miss Marissa paid $5.10.

“This year she's obviously taken a big step forward. She's trained better than ever and she's been to all of our divisions. Everyone has done a great job of developing her. She's in peak form and [Joel] Rosario gets along quite well with her.

“I'm sure the Farishes are thrilled with her progress as well and the black type that Chad has been able to develop into her. We'll see what's next for her. Off that race, I'm sure Chad and Mr. [William] Farish will consider the Breeders' Cup [Distaff]. We'll get her back and see how she comes out of it, and they'll come up with a plan,” Dan Stupp, assistant to Chad Brown, said after the Beldame.

“She broke really well. We were up a little bit in the race today. Sometimes, when there's no speed, she can be up a little bit. It looked like she was very comfortable, and we were just waiting for the time to come out and let her do her thing,” Rosario told the NYRA Press Office after the race.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Will Farish, Royal Flag is by Candy Ride (ARG) out of the Mineshaft mare Sea Gull. The 5-year-old mare is trained by Chad Brown. The G2 Beldame is Royal Flag's second win in four starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of six wins in 12 starts and career earnings of $573,020.

Pearls Galore Confirmed For BC Mile

Dual Group 1 runner-up Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has been confirmed for the upcoming GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar in November. A winner of the G3 Brownstown S. on July 11 and G3 Fairy Bridge S. on Aug. 26, the Haras de Saint-Pair homebred was second in both the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown on Sept. 11 and the Oct. 3 G1 Prix de la Foret.

Trainer Paddy Twomey said, “She came out of the race last weekend fantastic and she's in good form. She's going to the Breeders' Cup Mile. She wouldn't have liked the ground last week, she wants fast ground. If she gets a low draw in Del Mar I'd be very hopeful of her running a good race. I spent a summer out in Del Mar when I was a kid and I'd love to have a winner there.”

The Breeders' Cup is also the target for Oct. 8 G3 Cornwallis S. victor Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}). Owned and trained by Michael O'Callaghan, the colt will run in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

“Hopefully he's going to the Breeders Cup now,” said O'Callaghan. “It'll be his 11th start of the year. After he won the other day I was saying 'I'll give this lad a break'–but he arrived home the next morning and he told me different.

“He absolutely loves racing, he has a great constitution. He's just a bit of an animal, he loves his job and he's a dream to train. He's won the Cornwallis now and he's danced every dance this year so whatever he does at the Breeders' Cup will be a bonus.”

He added, “If he goes there in good fettle he'll run a big race. He runs in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and we're looking forward to it.”

Royal Flag Tops the Beldame

W.S. Farish's ascending homebred Royal Flag rallied to a convincing win in Sunday's GII Beldame S. at Belmont, her third graded stakes conquest in her last five starts.

Graduating second out by eight lengths in the Aqueduct mud in December of 2019, the chestnut repeated by nine lengths in a Gulfstream allowance/optional claimer and made it three straight with a score in a similar spot last May at Churchill. Disappointing somewhat with a distant third in the GIII Molly Pitcher S., she was a close runner-up in the GIII Shuvee S. and Lady's Secret S. before breaking through with her first black-type success in the GIII Turnback the Alarm H. at the Big A. Second by a head in the GIII Baird Doubledogdare S. making her 5-year-old debut Apr. 16 at Keeneland, she flew late to capture the Shuvee July 25 at Saratoga before running a narrow third in the GI Personal Ensign S. there Aug. 28.

Pounded down to odds-on here, Royal Flag settled in fifth as second choice and 2020 Beldame heroine Horologist dictated terms through comfortable splits of :23.97 and :48.54. Creeping closer while tipping into the clear as three-quarters went up in 1:13.03, she drifted to the center of the track as heads pointed for home, swept past Horologist just inside the eighth pole and drew clear under hand urging for a much-the-best triumph. Horologist dug in to hold off pace rival Miss Marissa for second.

“She broke really well. We were up a little bit in the race today,” said winning rider Joel Rosario. “Sometimes, when there's no speed, she can be up a little bit. It looked like she was very comfortable, and we were just waiting for the time to come out and let her do her thing. I wanted to be out [wide]. When she passes horses she can hang a little bit. I feel like if I get her away from them, she's more focused at that point. So, I stayed out there. If she has another horse there [beside her], she'll just stay there.”

Sea Gull, a $270,000 purchase by Farish at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2007, has an unraced juvenile full-sister to the winner named Song of the Sea and produced a colt by Quality Road this term before being bred to Into Mischief.

Slipstream Slips Through To Win Futurity, Earn BC Juvenile Turf Sprint Spot

Last early, Joel Rosario found room on the rail for Slipstream to slide past Run Curtis Run and win the Grade 3 Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. With this victory, Slipstream earns a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

Breaking from post four, Rosario settled Slipstream at the back of the field of eight in the race's opening strides, as longshots Ready to March and Run Curtis Run lead down the backstretch. Entering the final turn, Slipstream was still toward the back of the pack on the rail as Run Curtis Run took over the lead going into the stretch.

Over the firm Belmont turf, Run Curtis Run was a length to the good as Slipstream squeezed by Midnight Worker, finding just enough room to get to the outside of the leader. Once clear, the 2-year-old son of More Than Ready accelerated and pulled clear of Run Curtis Run in the race's final yards. Biz Biz Buzz was third and Midnight Worker fourth.

Slipstream paid $6.60, $3.90, and $3.30. Run Curtis Run paid $13.00 and $7.80. Biz Biz Buzz paid $4.80.

The G3 Futurity is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series. Winners of Challenge Series races receive a fees-paid, guaranteed spot in the starting gate for the corresponding event at the Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 5-6 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

Bred in Kentucky by Burleson Farm and McKenzie Bloodstock, Slipstream is out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Cake Baby. Owned by Jump Sucker Stable and trained by Christophe Clement, the 2-year-old colt has two wins in four starts for career earnings of $147,600. He was consigned by Burleson Farms at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and purchased by Northshore Bloodstock for $170,000.
