Letruska, Hot Rod Charlie Get Final Workouts For Breeders’ Cup

St. George Stable's Letruska, the probable favorite for the $2 million Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff next Saturday, Nov. 6,  and Roadrunner Racing, William Strauss, Boat Racing LLC, and Gainesway Stable's Hot Rod Charlie, a leading contender for the $6 million Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, turned in works over a fast main track at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., Saturday morning.

Letruska, trained by Fausto Gutierrez, worked five furlongs in 1:01.20, and shortly afterward, Hot Rod Charlie worked seven furlongs in company in 1:26.80 for trainer Doug O'Neill.

Letruska was scheduled to work on her own, but she picked up some company on the backstretch.

“I was not planning on company; it was not ideal,” said exercise rider Roger Horgan, who was aboard Letruska who stayed to the inside of her unexpected companion. “She did relax. I was a bit concerned, but she switched off and let her do it on her own. I was very proud of her the way she relaxed.”

Gutierrez said Letruska handled the track well, noting that she has handled every track well in a 2021 campaign that has taken her to six tracks previously.

Shortly after Letruska finished, Hot Rod Charlie appeared on the scene working in company with Khantaro d'Oro, a 2-year-old maiden. Del Mar clockers caught Hot Rod Charlie in :47.80 for the half-mile, 1:00.20 for five furlongs, 1:13 for six furlongs, and 1:26.80 for the seven-eighths.

“I thought the work was visually impressive,” O'Neill said. “Charlie sat off his workmate and when Flavien (Prat) called on him, he responded well. He galloped out good and his energy was very high.”

O'Neill also sent out $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf pre-entrant Mackinnon to work six furlongs on the main track in 1:14.80.

Nine other Breeders' Cup pre-entrants worked: Ain't Easy (NetJets Juvenile Fillies) 5f in 1:01; Desert Dawn (NetJets Juvenile Fillies) 5f in 1:00.60; Helens Well (IRE) (Juvenile Fillies Turf) 5f in 1:00.60; Oviatt Class (TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance) 5f in :59.60 in company; Proud Emma (Filly & Mare Sprint) 5f in :59.80 with Prat aboard; Aloha West (Qatar Racing Sprint) 4f in :47.20; Channel Maker (Longines Turf) 4f in :48.40; Chaos Theory (Turf Sprint) 4f in :48.20; and Horologist (Longines Distaff) 4f in :49.60.

Hicksy Becomes First Stakes Winner for Hootenanny

Hicksy became the first black-type winner for his GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winning freshman sire Hootenanny Saturday in Woodbine's Display S. Fourth on debut over the local synthetic Sept. 12, he rebounded with a six-length demolition next out at this oval Oct. 3, earning an 80 Beyer Speed Figure. Keeping a watchful eye on the leading favorite from second through a :46.10 half-mile, the bay swept up alongside the chalk in the final sixteenth and edged clear to score. Haras d’Etreham Announces 2022 Service Fees

Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), the sire of a pair of stakes horses from his eight winners to date, will stand the 2022 breeding season for a fee of €30,000, officials at Haras d'Etreham announced Saturday.

The best son of the in-demand Wootton Bassett, Almanzor is already the sire of winners in Ireland, England, the USA and France, where his three first-crop winners include the filly Queen Trezy (Fr), a three-length maiden winner at Lyon-Parilly Sept. 8 and a latest runner-up in the G3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville who has the G1 Prix de Diane as a long-term objective; and Saving Grace (Fr), not worse than second in her three runs to date and most recently second in the Listed Prix Isonomy at Deauville Oct. 20. Abbado (GB) has won two in a row for Sir Mark Prescott and Cheveley Park Stud and is likely to be aimed for a Derby trial next spring, while Unanimous Consent (GB) was a very impressive maiden winner on debut for Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables last month. The John & Thady Gosden-trained Filistine (Ire) became his sire's latest winner when taking out a novice race over seven furlongs at Newmarket Oct. 29.

City Light (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) is represented by his first crop of foals in 2021, some of which are headed to the upcoming breeding stock sales, and he covered a book of 119 mares this past breeding season. His service fee holds steady at €7,000.

Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was well received in his first year at stud in 2021 and remains at €30,000 fo 2022 after covering a full book this year, while Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}) will stand for €25,000 after being fully booked for his inaugural season.

“I would like to take advantage of this announcement of our stallion fees to thank once again all breeders, both new and loyal clients, for their support in 2021,” said Haras d'Etreham's Executive Director Nicolas de Chambure. “This is also an opportunity to confirm that our stallions will once again be limited to 140 mares for the season. In a polarized market where the risk of overproduction is real, this choice seems both obvious and necessary. The rarity factor is a creator of value and in this way, we aim to guarantee the enhancement of returns on investments for breeders who support us and our stallions.”
