La Dragontea Supplemented to Fasig-Tipton

La Dragontea (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}–La Concorde {Fr}, by Sadler's Wells), second in Sunday's GI E. P. Taylor S. after a win in last month's GII Canadian S., has been supplemented to the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, which will take place Tuesday, Nov. 9.

Catalogued as hip 267 in the sale known as the “Night of the Stars,” La Dragontea will be consigned as a racing/broodmare prospect by Hunter Valley Farm, agent.

The 4-year-old filly, who was bred by Bartisan Racing Ltd., began her career in England but thrived when coming stateside and being placed under the tutelage of Christophe Clement. She began her North American campaign with a Belmont allowance win in May and later added a Saratoga allowance before the Woodbine campaign that resulted in the Canadian win and E. P. Taylor runner-up finish.

“La Dragontea should appeal to a wide variety of racing and breeding operations,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “She is beautifully bred, has current Grade I form, and at just 4-years-old, she has a lot of racing still ahead of her.”

Owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Rebecca Hillen, La Dragontea is from the immediate family of European champion and leading sire Montjeu.

Pin Oak’s Broken Vow Pensioned

Pin Oak stalwart Broken Vow (Unbridled–Wedding Vow, by Nijinsky II), the sire of 2016 Eclipse champion Champagne Room and 79 other black-type winners, has been pensioned from the stallion barn and will remain at his lifetime home.

Racing as a homebred for Pin Oak Stud, the nom de course of Josephine Abercrombie's historic racing and breeding operation, Broken Vow was a five-time stakes winner for trainer Graham Motion. His top wins included the 2001 GII Philip H. Iselin H. and the GIII Ben Ali S., as well as another four graded placings, including the 2001 GI Gulfstream Park H. Broken Vow retired to his birthplace to stand his first season in 2002 at age five for $10,000.

Broken Vow's first crop included GI Beldame S. winner Unbridled Belle and GII Futurity S. winner Private Vow. While he only topped 100 foals twice in 17 crops of racing age to date, the bay continued to deliver consistent quality, with runners including MGISW Sassy Image, GISWs Rosalind and Cotton Blossom, and MGSW Imprimis. Overall, the 24-year-old's 80 stakes winners include 26 graded winners to date and progeny earnings of more than $80 million. Broken Vow is also making a name for himself as a broodmare sire with the 36 black-type winners out of his daughters including champion and sire Runhappy (Super Saver).

“First as a race horse and then as an anchor to our stallion roster for 20 seasons, Broken Vow is the embodiment of Ms. Abercrombie's breeding program, producing sound, competitive racehorses whose bloodlines endure,” said long-time Pin Oak Stud manager Clifford Barry. “We appreciate the industry's support through the years, but mostly we thank Broken Vow for his loyal service to the farm and look forward to providing a well-deserved retirement for him here at Pin Oak.”

Broken Vow stood his final season this year for $20,000. Last month, Pin Oak Stud dispersed 23 mares and foals at a special sale held at Fasig-Tipton. In addition, Chris McGrath recently delved into the legacy of Pin Oak and Abercrombie.

Graded Stakes Winner La Dragontea Supplemented To Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Fasig-Tipton has added another graded stakes winner to its upcoming November Sale. La Dragontea, second in Woodbine's Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes this past Sunday, has been cataloged as Hip 267. She will be consigned as a racing/broodmare prospect by Hunter Valley Farm, agent.

Owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Rebecca Hillen, La Dragontea has had an outstanding 4-year-old season since arriving from Europe and entering the barn of trainer Christophe Clement.  Her three wins this year include Woodbine's G2 Canadian Stakes, where she stalked the pace going 1 1/8 miles to win in hand. She followed that victory up with her second-place finish in the E.P. Taylor – where she changed tactics and sat well off the pace – closing strongly to lose by just a neck going 1 1/4 miles.

La Dragontea is a daughter of multiple classic winner and top European sire Lope de Vega. One of the hottest young sires in the world, he is already the sire of 49 group or graded stakes winners, 13 of which are Group or Grade 1.

La Dragontea's dam La Concorde, a winning daughter of Sadler's Wells, is closely related to European champion and champion sire Montjeu. Her immediate family includes Group 1 winners Galileo Gold, Goldream, Again, and Aclaim.

“La Dragontea should appeal to a wide variety of racing and breeding operations,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “She is beautifully bred, has current Grade 1 form, and at just four years old she has a lot of racing still ahead of her.”

The Fasig-Tipton November Sale will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Lexington, Ky. The sale will begin at 2 p.m.

Niarchos Family To Receive International Award Of Merit

The Niarchos Family will be honoured with the Longines and IFHA International Award of Merit for 2021. The award recognises distinguished horsemen and horsewomen for lifelong contributions to Thoroughbred racing, with previous winners including the Magnier Family and Aidan O'Brien; the Romanet Family, Jim Bolger, Alec Head and Seth Hancock.

The late Stavros Niarchos, a Greek naval officer in World War II who made his fortune in the shipping business, first became involved with Thoroughbred racing in the 1950s before taking a break and returning with a major commitment in the 1970s. The Niarchos Family has bred and/or raced 125 Grade and Group 1 winners around the globe.

One of the Niarchos Family's first notable horses was Nureyev, who they purchased at the 1978 Keeneland July Sale. Nureyev went on to be a highly influential sire, and among his best progeny was the Niarchos Family's homebred Miesque, a champion in England, the U.S. and France, a dual GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner, Hall of Famer and influential broodmare, her progeny perhaps highlighted by the Group 1-winning sire Kingmambo. Miesque's influence is still felt today through numerous branches, including the one that has produced Group 1-winning sisters Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) for the Niarchos Family.

Stavros Niarchos was leading owner in France in 1983 and 1984, and leading breeder in 1989, 1993 and 1994. Niarchos died in 1996, at which point his daughter Maria Niarchos-Gouaze took over the family's Thoroughbred business.

The Niarchos Family has been strong supporters of the Breeders' Cup since the meeting's inception and has won seven Breeders' Cup races with six homebreds: Miesque, Spinning World, Domedriver (Ire), Six Perfections (Fr), Karakontie (Jpn) and Main Sequence. The Niarchos Family will be honoured during a ceremony on Nov. 5 in Del Mar during the Breeders' Cup, where Niarchos-Gouaze will accept the Award of Merit on behalf of the family.

Other prominent horses raced by the Niarchos Family include Bago (Fr), Divine Proportions, Light Shift, Ulysses (Ire), Alpha Centauri (Ire), Study Of Man (Jpn) and Circus Maximus (Ire). They also bred War Of Will, the 2019 GI Preakness S. winner.
