MGISW Raging Bull to Gainesway in 2022

Multiple Grade I winner Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley) will stand the 2022 season at Gainesway Farm following his retirement from racing. The winner of this season's GI Maker's Mark Mile is expected to make his final start in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Raging Bull will enter stud in 2022 with an advertised fee of $10,000 LFSN.

“Raging Bull is a knockout physically,” said Gainesway General Manager Brian Graves. “His six triple digit Beyer speed figures and his performances over 14 Grade I events are impressive. His sire, Dark Angel, has become one of the most influential sires in International racing.”

Included among his black-type victories at three, Raging Bull took the GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S., GIII Saranac S. and Del Mar's GI Hollywood Derby. At four, he made five starts, all in Grade I company, placing in the GI Manhattan S., GII Fourstardave H. and GI Woodbine Mile. The Chad Brown trainee returned last season to capture the Shoemaker Mile in addition to placing in the Maker's Mark Mile and GI Shadwell Turf Mile S. at Keeneland.

“Raging Bull (FR) is the best-looking horse I have ever trained,” said Brown. “He has run fast numbers at many different tracks, winning Grade I's in three different years, the ultimate confirmation of incredible soundness.”

Bred by Dayton Investments Limited, he was campaigned by by Peter Brant. The French-bred accounted for seven wins from 21 lifetime starts, encompassing 18 consecutive starts in graded stakes company, and finishing in the top three in nine of 14 Grade I events.

“I am extremely bullish on his chances at stud. We are excited to be partnering with Gainesway on Raging Bull and will be supporting him strongly with our mares,” said Brant.

Dubawi’s Erevann A New Rising Star At Deauville

From the mud and the murk of a storm-hit Deauville on Thursday emerged the latest TDN Rising Star as The Aga Khan's Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) strutted his stuff in the card's opening Prix de Saint-Desir for unraced juveniles. A son of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix du Moulin heroine Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) racing for the Jean-Claude Rouget stable, the April-foaled bay was patiently ridden by Christophe Soumillon towards the rear early. Making smooth headway in the straight, the 41-10 second favourite was shaken up to challenge at the furlong marker and did it all under mild handling in the closing stages to score stress-free by 3/4-of-a-length from Lev (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). That Pia and Joakim Brandt-trained half-sister to the G3 Prix Sigy-winning sire Fas (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in turn had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over Etatique (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in third as the conditions took their toll on most.

Erevann, who is the 18th TDN Rising Star for his sire, is the second of three foals and first scorer out of the high-class miler, who is a half-sister to the Listed Dusseldorf Preis winner Elennga (Fr) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and to the dam of the dual listed-placed Ebony (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). A daughter of the G3 Prix Vanteaux runner-up Elva (Ire) (King's Best), her filly foal is by Kitten's Joy.

Study: No Proof Horses Bond To Humans

Though many horse owners believe their horses are bonded to them, The Horse reports there's actually no scientific evidence demonstrating this.

Dr. Elke Hartmann of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences compared horse and human bonds to the bonding that occurs between dogs and humans. Dogs often consider their humans safe and will stay near them when they are afraid. Hartmann notes that horses may not express their attachment in the same ways dogs do, seeking them out in times of stress, or jumping on or playing with humans. We don't yet know what behaviors to look for demonstrating attachment from horses.

[Story Continues Below]

Hartmann said evidence has shown that horses are often relaxed around humans with whom they are familiar, though this may depend on the type of training the horse receives from the human. To determine if positive reinforcement caused horses to bond with their trainers, Hartmann and a research team used 12 Standardbred school horses between five and 13 years old in a recent study. The horses had been trained for handling, riding and driving by students using negative reinforcement (meaning the release of pressure).

The horses were given tests using a familiar and an unfamiliar human, both before and after training which used different reinforcement models: negative reinforcement alone, negative reinforcement with food-based positive reinforcement, or negative reinforcement with wither-scratching positive reinforcement.

Hartmann reported that no matter the training method, all horses were calmer after the training, but in general, they showed little difference between the familiar trainer and the unfamiliar human.

Horses taking part in the obstacle course after training using wither scratching took significantly less time to complete the course when paired with the familiar trainer. The scientists believe that scratching may aid in the development of a horse-trainer bond since it's a mutual grooming technique.

Though humans who spend more time with their horses may develop attachments, Hartmann believes more work is needed to prove the phenomenon happens for the horse. Until then, Hartmann encourages humans to manage their equine relationship expectations. Horse owners shouldn't put themselves in dangerous situations because they feel the horse “loves” them and therefore won't harm them: A horse might not respond the way a bonded human would.

Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Oct. 23-24, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. The 3-year-old fillies' Classics concluded with last weekend's G1 Shuka Sho and 3-year-old males get their final chance at Classics glory in Sunday's G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) at Hanshin. A $250K Keeneland September buyback turned $500K OBS March breezer (under-tack video), the bay filly is out of a dual stakes winner whose daughter Tricky Escape (Hat Trick {Jpn}) was successful three times at the graded level on the turf. Advance Dream was sold on for $150K as a weanling at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and was retained on a bid of $190K at KEESEP last fall a few months before his half-brother Arabian Prince (Mshawish) finished third in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Advance Dream's stakes-placed dam is out of MSW Velvet Snow (Subordination). B-Mountmellick Farm (KY)

Secret Gypsy was sold to Shadai Farm for $540K at KEEJAN in 2011 and has produced six winners from as many to start. Her final foal is the unraced 2-year-old colt Herrenchiemsee (Jpn) (Isla Bonita {Jpn}), who fetched the equivalent of $230K at the 2019 JRHA Select Foal Sale. B-Zayat Stables LLC (KY)
