Cross Entry For Teona At Breeders’ Cup

Teona (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who upset Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Prix Vermeille in September but bypassed the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on account of the ground, will be cross-entered in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and the GI Turf at Del Mar, said trainer Roger Varian.

“It's always been the plan to take Teona to the Breeders' Cup since we defected from the Arc,” the trainer said. “She'll be entered in the Fillies and Mares, but she'll also have an entry in the Turf. We'll make a decision later on, but she's in great form, and we're looking forward to running her in one of those races.”

Teona had managed just 10th behind Snowfall in the G1 Oaks in June, and enjoyed a summer holiday before returning to win the Listed August S. and the Vermeille.

“She seems to like the faster ground and she should certainly get that,” Varian said. “She's quite lightly-raced and has not had as hard a season as some of the horses she'll be racing against. She showed herself to be high quality in her most recent two starts, at Windsor and at Longchamp in the Vermeille, so she'll be deserving of her place in the line-up, whichever option we choose. Most likely, she'll be our only runner at the Breeders' Cup this year.”

Mishriff To Miss Breeders’ Cup

Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), the globetrotting winner of this year's G1 Juddmonte International, G1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Saudi Cup, will put a pause on his travels and miss the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Trainer John Gosden told Daily Racing Form that the world's joint highest-rated horse needed “a little bit of a rest” after finishing fourth in last weekend's G1 Champion S. at Ascot.

“You need to be 100% happy that you're doing the right thing,” Gosden told that publication. “He's been a pretty busy boy.”

The 4-year-old Mishriff races as a homebred for Prince Faisal. He also won last year's G1 Prix du Jockey Club. Ted Voute, Prince Faisal's racing manager, said that Mishriff is likely to stay in training for a 5-year-old campaign, with a repeat in the Saudi Cup the first key target.

“The Prince has said that unless a huge offer comes in for him to go to stud–and I think the likelihood of that is pretty slim at this stage of the year with all the marketing that's required–then he will be back next year. In fairness to John, up until he won the Juddmonte, he was always of the opinion that Del Mar might be a bit sharp for a big horse like him. He thinks we should follow the same route as last year by freshening him up after the Champion before heading back to the Saudi Cup; that's the target. Although he's had a bit of time between his races this season, he has been on the go since February. John said we'll aim for the same races in Europe again, although whether he ends up in the Champion S. or the Arc, we'll have to see.”

Speak Of The Devil To Be Offered At Arqana December

Speak Of The Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}-Moranda {Fr}, by Indian Rocket {GB}) will be offered at Arqana's December Breeding Stock Sale on Dec. 4.

The winner of her lone 2-year-old start in 2019 for owner Rashit Shaykhutdinov and trainer Fabrice Chappet, Speak Of The Devil was second, beaten a nose by Dream And Do (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches of 2020. Fourth in the G1 Prix Rothschild two months later, Speak Of The Devil earned a first black-type win in ParisLongchamp's Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr over seven furlongs last October. Transferred to Frederic Rossi in July, Speak Of The Devil picked up another listed win in Deauville's one-mile Prix de la Calonne and was third, beaten a neck, behind Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and ahead of the subsequent G1 Prix de l'Opera victress Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) in the latest edition of the Rothschild. Speak Of The Devil was last seen finishing sixth in the G1 Prix de la Foret on Oct. 3.

Speak Of The Devil is a half-sister to the triple middle-distance Group 3-winning Morando (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), with plenty more stakes winners on the page tracing back to the Pouliches-winning fourth dam Silvermine (Fr) (Bellypha {Ire}).

Consistency The Key For Stella Veloce In Kikuka Sho

The Japanese Triple Crown concludes Sunday afternoon with the running of the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) over a metric mile and seven furlongs at Hanshin Racecourse. With G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) hero Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) pointing towards next weekend's G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and G1 Tokyo Yushun victor Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) also giving the race a miss, the Kikuka Sho is really anybody's horse race.

Stella Veloce (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) is liable to jump as the race favourite as he goes second-up since his third in the Tokyo Yushun May 30. Having also filled the third spot in the Guineas, the dark bay was the 2-1 second-elect in the Sept. 26 G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai (2200mT) at Chukyo–one of two trials for the Kikuka Sho–and raced near the tail of the field over rain-affected ground before rallying through the stretch to best Red Genesis (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) by a half-length, while Shahryar could do no better than fourth as the $1.80 (4-5) pick. By a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, Stella Veloce should find Sunday's trip within his scope, particularly on a sounder surface.

“He was plus [20]kg for his last race, but since the spring he's certainly developed a lot,” said trainer Naosuke Sugai. “Despite the ground last time, he recovered well and there was no damage from that run, so we can look to the Kikuka Sho with him.”

Orthoclase (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) looks to follow in the hoofprints of his sire, who romped by five lengths in soft ground in the 2013 Kikuka Sho. The son of MG1SW champion older mare Marialite (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) won his first two outings at three and closed the season with a runner-up effort in the G1 Hopeful S. (2000mT). The dark bay has just one start under his belt this season, a running-on third in the G2 Asahi Hai St Lite Kinen (2200m), two lengths behind the upset-minded Asamano Itazura (Jpn) (Victoire Pisa {Jpn}).

Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), whose own sire won the first two legs of the Triple Crown before having to miss the Leger, was second from a handy position in the Satsuki Sho before fading to sixth in the Derby. He disappointed in the St Lite Kinen, finishing last but one, but can bounce back if seeing out the trip this weekend.

American-bred Air Sage (Point of Entry) is three-for-four lifetime and has accomplished something that none of his 17 rivals can boast. Bred in Kentucky by Dr. Naoya and Marie Yoshida's Winchester Farm, the half-brother to GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) and to the useful Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}) is the lone member of the Kikuka Sho field to have won a race past 12 furlongs, having led throughout to take a second-level allowance over a mile and five-eighths at Sapporo Aug. 21.
