Waterville Lake Stable Set For First Breeders’ Cup With Juvenile Turf Sprint Contender Derrynane

New York-based owners Waterville Lake Stable will enjoy the Breeders' Cup spotlight for the first time when they send out their Empire State-homebred Derrynane in the Grade 2, $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint on November 5 at Del Mar.

Waterville Lake Stable is owned by Richard Leahy in partnership with John W. Meriwether and Tim Tully, all of which are stakeholders in Waterville Golf Links in County Kerry, Ireland, where their name derives. Many horses that race under the Waterville Lake Stable banner are a nod to the ownership group's familiarity with Ireland. Derrynane is named after Derrynane Beach, located on the Ring of Kerry.

Trained by Christophe Clement, Derrynane, a bay daughter of Quality Road, was a winner at first asking with a two-length victory going 5 ½ furlongs in a state-bred maiden special weight on July 22 over good Mellon turf at Saratoga. Following a distant fifth in the open Bolton Landing one month later over a yielding turf at the Spa, Derrynane was an ultra-impressive winner of the five-furlong Woodbine Cares on September 19, which prompted her connections to consider the Breeders' Cup.

“We were very pleased with her run first out,” Leahy said. “When she ran her second race in the Bolton Landing, it was over a bog, and we knew that she was far better than that. Given the timing and the weather, we went to Woodbine and she won quite easily.”

Derrynane is the first progeny out of the graded-stakes placed Hard Spun mare Portmagee, who captured the License Fee in 2017 following a third in that year's Grade 3 Intercontinental, both at Belmont. Portmagee, named after a village near Waterville Golf Links, is currently in foal to More Than Ready.

“From early on, she was extremely good looking and did everything right,” Leahy said of Derrynane. “She seemed very well balanced and well put together. The mother was extremely attractive and well balanced, also. She had a good personality and demeanor. The mother was a sprinter but we never thought there was any reason she couldn't go further.”

The relationship between Leahy and Clement extends over two decades, linking up via former NYRA chairman Peter Karches, who owned horses with Clement at the time. In addition to Waterville Lake Stable, Leahy also owns horses with Clement under his Oak Bluff Stable moniker of which he is the standalone owner.

Leahy and Clement have enjoyed success with Waterville Lake Stable-owned graded stakes winners Mariensky, Strike It Rich and Derrianne as well as New York-bred stakes winners Miss Valentine, Sea Foam and Celtic Sky.

As Oak Bluff Stable, Leahy and Clement have campaigned the graded-stakes placed Therapist, a multiple stakes winner against New York-breds and open company.

“With Christophe the horse always comes first, we like that,” Leahy said.

Leahy speaks high volumes of the New York-bred program.

“I think the New York bred program is a sensational one,” Leahy said. “It's lucrative and in my mind, you're only a van ride away from the best stallions in Kentucky. There's no reason if you have a good mare that you can't produce a competitive horse in New York. It's not easy to win these races. They're competitive races as well. Over the years I've been doing this, the New York-bred horses have gotten more and more competitive.”

Leahy said he is looking forward to the possibility of going to the Breeders' Cup with Derrynane. While it would be a first Breeder's Cup endeavor for Leahy, it would be a second for Waterville Lake partner John Meriwether, who owned Buckhar – the 13th-place finisher of the 1993 Mile.

“We're very excited about her future,” Leahy said. “It's really special. Hopefully, she has a long career ahead of her. I was talking to Christophe's son Miguel the other morning and he was very excited about her breeze last week.”

Arqana October Comes To A Close

The curtain came down on the five-day Arqana October Yearling Sale on Friday with a low-key session of 99 yearlings that was headed by J.K. Thoroughbreds's filly by Zelzal (Ire) (lot 705), who was bought by Mandore Agency and John Hammond for €41,000. The top-priced colt of the day was a first-crop son of Cloth Of Stars (Ire) (lot 723), and the name on the ticket was once again John Hammond at €30,000.

Friday's trade saw 84.9% of the yearlings offered change hands to add €940,500 to the sale's aggregate. While the average (€11,196) and median (€10,000) were down for the session, they were well up for the sale as a whole. Over the week, 582 yearlings were sold for €26,740,500, a record for the sale and up 48% on 2020, when four fewer horses were sold. The cumulative average of €45,946 marked a 47% jump, while the median climbed 40% to €28,000. Figures were also up on the pre-pandemic 2019 sale, when 414 horses were sold for €16,957,000 at an average of €40,959 and a median of €25,000.

Monceaux was leading vendor at the sale with 26 yearlings sold for €3,464,000, including the sale-topping €440,000 Camelot colt, while Stroud Coleman Bloodstock topped the buyers' table with 15 purchased for €2,395,000.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said in a statement, “After last year's sale that produced mixed results in an uncertain environment, we can only be satisfied with these figures. They have exceeded all our expectations. A total of 63 horses were sold for €100,000 or more and demand remained very strong from start to finish, as evidenced by the 83% of horses sold and with French and international purchases from England, Ireland, USA, Scandinavia, Australia, Germany, Spain, Japan, Eastern Europe etc. We would like to thank all of our buyers, who never stop increasing, for their confidence. We must also salute the work and endurance of our consignors. All this would not be possible without them. Since August more than 900 yearlings have already been sold. A final session devoted to the flat followed by the cream of

the National Hunt yearlings is still to come at the Autumn Sale next month.”

My bet is on Dallas in game 6!

Last week I warned you that the NBA Finals would be won at the charity stripe and that comment has been money in the bank. Especially in game 5 last night, when Dwayne Wade literally won the game with two foul shots in the last 1.9 seconds.

As of this moment there have been 5 games and let’s take a look at the statistics! Game 1 was won by Dallas and they made 20-26 shots to Miami’s 7 of 19. In game 2 the Mavericks won again and the Mavs won and were 23-28 from the line while Miami was 20-32.

Game 3 was in Miami and the Heat won and were 20-34 while Dallas was 18-26 and in game 4 another Heat win, Miami was 23-36 and Cuban’s boys 21-27. Game 5 saw the Heat win as we mentioned and they were a whopping 32-49 while Dallas was 21-25, in fact Wade himself had as many attempts and makes as Dallas!

These finals are becoming like all the reality shows on television in that they are so removed from reality that it is humorous. The referees are clearly intimidated in the home building and the best proposition bet is that the home team will attempt more free throws. Furthermore the NBA czar David Stern also tilted the outcome in the direction of Miami last night by suspended Jerry Stackhouse for his bump of Shaq.

Now the scene shifts back to the Lone Star State and the Texans are ready for a lynching and Stern may want to watch this game from the comfort of his home. After last nights game billionaire owner Mark Cuban attacked the scorers table and stared down the commissioner, as well as screamed at official Joe DeRosa. Cuban should be looking at a huge penalty, but I’m not sure if Stern has the balls to incite the Dallas rioters any further.

The bottom line is that Dallas is 4 of 5 with the point spread in this series, gets the home court and another double digit is points with the return of Stackhouse. The line had already been established at Mavs -6 and that incidentally is the highest number hung in any game to date. The linemakers realize that Dallas is the better team, are at home and will get to the foul line more.

They need to get some two way action and they will with public money and recreational bettors, who figure another thrilling finish is about to take place. This will not occur!

Have you ever watch an old western movie where the bad guys go into the saloon and grab some innocent dude and tie him to rope hooked up to a horse drawn wagon. Then they proceed to take this guy for a disturbing and torturous journey.

This is akin to what will transpire in American Airlines West tomorrow as the Mavericks will deliver an old fashion beating and easily cover the spread!
