Rocketry Arrives at Old Friends

MGSW Rocketry (Hard Spun) retired from racing in August and, after spending a month at Centennial Farms in Virginia, became the newest resident of Old Friends Friday. The 7-year-old 'TDN Rising Star' retired after five seasons on the track with six wins from 29 starts and lifetime earnings of $811,577.

“Who doesn't love Rocketry?” said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. “We're very fortunate that Centennial Farms trusts us to care for their great marathoner. Thanks to Don Little, Jr. and Jimmy Jerkens for allowing us to showcase him to his many fans.”

Dark Angel Filly A New Rising Star At Dundalk

Dundalk's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden had the feel of a must-watch race beforehand and Friday's seven-furlong contest lived up to expectations playing host to a new TDN Rising Star in Newtown Anner Stud Farm's Angels Wrath (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Flaunting her wares in a barrier trial here prior to this debut against some smart yardsticks, the 9-2 shot was restrained in mid-division early showing keenness under Ben Coen. Looming with menace when pulled wide in the straight, the Johnny Murtagh-trained homebred showed sharp acceleration to hit the front with a furlong remaining and despite veering left soon after dominated fellow newcomer Kitty Kitana (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) to win by 3 1/4 lengths. There was 1 1/4 lengths back to Ballydoyle's well-supported 2-1 favourite West Coast (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third, with others such as the proven Livia Celeste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the newcomer Lustre (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-sister to Cliffs of Moher (Ire), well beaten in fifth and 10th respectively.

“She won a barrier trial a way back and was keen then, so I wanted to get her settled and she did things right today,” Coen explained. “She was still plenty green, so there's a lot to work on. We liked her coming here, as she quickened very smart in her barrier trial and that experience was a big help to her. Johnny's improve no end from them and I probably would have been disappointed if I wasn't bang there. She really galloped out strong and took a bit of pulling up too. She has plenty of options and I'm looking forward to her. She has a huge frame, so next year will be her year and anything that comes this year is a bonus.”

Angels Wrath, who becomes the fourth TDN Rising Star for her sire, was offered at the Goffs Sportsman's Yearling Sale 12 months ago, but came back to her breeders after failing to make her reserve. She is the third foal out of the useful Cailini Alainn (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), whose career-best came when winning a 13-furlong handicap at Leopardstown in 2015. She is a half to Dark Crusader (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), winner of York's Melrose H. over the Ebor trip and runner-up in the G3 Give Thanks S. before producing this year's other TDN Rising Star Duke de Sessa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Another of Cailini Alainn's half-siblings is Naughty Or Nice (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who was also a strong stayer who took the 13-furlong Listed Yeats S. and finished third in the 14-furlong G3 Stanerra S. This is also the family of the GI Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup H. and G2 King Edward VII S. hero Subtle Power (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and of Mutahadee (Ire) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) who was runner-up in the G1 Dubai Duty Free. Cailini Alainn's yearling filly is by Tamayuz (GB).

Pair Of 2-Year-Old Stakes Featured On Closing Day At Monmouth Park

Two-year-olds will take center stage on Sunday at Monmouth Park with a pair of stakes races on the final day of the 55-day meet, which concludes with a 14-race card.

The $500,000 Nownownow Stakes, scheduled for a mile on the grass, and the $100,000 Smoke Glacken, at six furlongs on the main track, will serve as showcases for 2-year-olds, some of which have designs on the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar.

Monmouth Park increased the purse of the Nownownow Stakes from $150,000 to $500,000 in an effort to lure potential Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hopefuls looking for one last prep.

The Mark Casse-trained Coinage, coming off a win in the Grade 3 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 1, heads a 10-horse field in the Nownownow Stakes, which includes first-out winner Dakota Gold. The New York-bred Dakota Gold won his debut for trainer Danny Gargan by 4½ lengths against open Maiden Special Weight company on Sept. 2 at Saratoga.

Midnight Chrome, Grooms All Bizness and There Are No Words come into the race after breaking their maiden on the grass at Monmouth Park in their last start.

The Butch Reid-trained Practical Coach, a first-out winner at Parx on Aug. 25 at six furlongs, heads a field of eight 2-year-olds for the Smoke Glacken Stakes. Swift Tap, a handy debut winner at Monmouth Park on Aug. 11 before finishing fifth in the $200,000 Sapling Stakes, will add blinkers for this start for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

The races for top jockey, trainer and owner all appear to have been decided, with Paco Lopez already clinching his eighth riding title with 100 victories for the meet entering the final three-day weekend of racing. Only Joe Bravo, with 13, has won more riding titles at Monmouth Park.

Wayne Potts enters the final three days of live racing with a 10-win lead (36 to 26) over Kelly Breen in the trainers' race, while Colts Neck Stables LLC has a four-win lead over Mr. Amore Stable (12 to 8) in the quest for top owner honors.

Bots: Where Fecal Egg Counts Fail

A fecal egg count test is a common horse health practice designed to combat the overuse of equine dewormers and consequent drug resistance. Though the test is helpful in determining which horses need to be treated for parasites, there is one parasite that escapes being found on the screening: bots.

Fecal egg counts don't show the bot load a horse is carrying because bot eggs are not found in horse manure. Bot flies lay eggs on a horse's body, often on the lower legs and chest. As the horse licks the eggs, they hatch and he swallows the larvae, where they enter his digestive tract. The larvae, not eggs, leave via manure and the process begins again.

Bot fly eggs look like small yellow grains of rice that stick to horse's hair. To remove them, horse owners can use a bot knife, which has a serrated blade, or a fiberglass block, which grabs and removes the eggs.

If bot fly eggs are removed diligently throughout the year, a horse owner may be able to skip deworming for bots – the horse will be fine if he ingests a few. If the horse isn't groomed regularly, however, it's worthwhile to give him a single dose of moxidectin or ivermectin after the first frost.
