Crazy Beautiful Headlines Friday’s Seneca At Churchill

Phoenix Thoroughbred's three-time graded stakes winner Crazy Beautiful headlines a field of seven 3-year-old fillies that were entered in Friday's $160,000 Seneca Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The 1 1/16-mile Seneca Overnight Stakes was carded as the featured ninth race on Friday's 10-race card with a post time of 4:55 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 12:45 p.m.

Trained by Kenny McPeek, Crazy Beautiful has recorded three victories from six starts in her 3-year-old campaign with wins in the $300,000 Grade 3 Delaware Oaks, $200,000 Grade 2 Summertime Oaks, and $200,000 Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. The well-traveled filly by Liam's Map has competed at seven different racetracks since she began her career July 5, 2020, at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., but she has yet to record a win at Churchill Downs. Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount from post No. 6.

Luxembourg Possible For Futurity

Saturday's G2 Beresford S. hero Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) is under consideration for the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on Oct. 23. A winner on debut at Killarney for Westerberg, Mrs. J. Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith on July 14, the bay also holds an entry in the Oct. 9 G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket.

O'Brien said, “He's a lovely horse and was showing loads before he went to Killarney. He came forward every week after that, and it was a lovely second stage for him.

“The plan was to come here and then he might go for the Futurity if he stays well. Sometimes this time of the year horses can go off, because he is a big horse. He has plenty of class and is not short of pace. He goes through his work very well.”

Frankel’s Alpinista Downs G1 Preis von Europa Rivals

It's been a season like no other for Kirsten Rausing's Lanwades Stud operation and, fresh on the heels of Zaaki (GB)'s cakewalk in Saturday's G1 Underwood S., the Sir Mark Prescott-conditioned 4-year-old filly Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) made it a quickfire elite-level double for the nursery, sporting her owner-breeder's colours, in Sunday's G1 59th Preis von Europa at Cologne. The February-foaled grey, second in last term's G1 Yorkshire Oaks, was unbeaten in three prior black-type starts this term and lined up as the 11-10 favourite for this latest outing returning off a G2 Lancashire Oaks win and a comfortable defeat of leading German stayer Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in Hoppegarten's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin last month. The enigmatic Quebueno (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) was in reticent mood and scratched at the start after refusing to load. Alpinista was steadied off the tempo in third after passing the judge first time as Grosser Preis von Berlin fourth Nerium (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) led the way with a handy advantage from MG1SP G2 Badischen Wirtschaft winner Kaspar (Ger) (Pivotal {GB}) in second. Initiating her pursuit of the clear leader when bounced into second off the home turn, she quickened smartly to seize control approaching the furlong pole and stayed on strongly under continued urging in the closing stages to deny her old foe by 1 1/4 lengths for a second Group 1 triumph. Darius Racing's G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) was doing all his best work at the finish and ran on well from off the pace to hit the line 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

“We're very happy, it's a fantastic family and thanks very much to Miss Rausing for sending us such a lovely filly,” said assistant trainer William Butler. “It's been a very lucky family for the stable, right the way back to Alborada through to Albanova, who won this race in 2004. I was here for that and this is great too. She's done everything we've asked of her this year and that's four runs and four wins. She's won two Group 1s, a Group 2 and a Listed, so we're very, very lucky to have her.” Looking ahead to possible future targets, Butler added, “Coming back to Germany [for the G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern] is an option, as is the [G1 British Champions] Fillies & Mares at Ascot. It could be Munich, but we'll see. The main thing is to get her back home and make sure she's okay. With these fillies, you've just got to make sure they're in good form and they're healthy. When they are, they can do things like this.”

Alpinista, kin to the unraced 2-year-old filly Alpenblume (GB) (Kendargent {Fr}) and a yearling colt by Oasis Dream (GB), is one of 19 Group 1 winners by her sire and the first foal produced by a stakes-winning half to four stakes performers out of MG1SW distaffer Albanova (GB) (Alzao), winner of this in 2004. They include G3 Legacy Cup victor Algometer (GB) (Archipenko), stakes-winning G3 Geoffrey Freer S. placegetter Alignak (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and multiple stakes winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Albanova is one of four black-type performers thrown by stakes-winning G1 Moyglare Stud S. third Alouette (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), whose descendants also include dual G1 Champion S. heroine Alborada (GB) (Alzao) and stakes-winning G1 Epsom Derby second Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Adayar and Hurricane Lane in Top Form Ahead of Arc

Godolphin 2021 Classic winners Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) both exited their Saturday works in good shape and are pleasing trainer Charlie Appleby in advance of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 3.

A winner of the G1 Cazoo Derby-with his stablemate third-in the spring, Adayar added the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizibeth QIPCO S. on July 24. A setback ruled the bay out of an intended Arc warmup in the G2 Prix Niel on Sept. 12, but he is back in good order and will have William Buick aboard on Sunday.

Appleby said, “I'm very pleased with both horses this morning. As we know, Adayar met with that setback before the Arc trials and missed two pieces of work–which we felt was enough to make us not go to the trials, because as we said before he's a horse that didn't need to earn his stripes.

“Since then he's done very well–we had a very easy piece of work last Saturday, and the first chance William had to sit on him was on Wednesday of this week.

“All the signs were very good, William was pleased with him–he said he felt great and was fresh on the back of having that easy period. He took him through the gallop very well and picked up well. He came out of that gallop in good order and went back into a nice, routine gallop yesterday morning–more of a stronger pace in the gallop, and he drew up it very well, again ridden by William.

“Again I'd emphasise William was very happy with him. He was happy with him on Wednesday, and that's why after discussions with him he was the horse he felt he would like to ride in the Arc. William is obviously first jockey, and if that is the horse he chooses to ride then I feel that's positive going into any race.

“We're very pleased with the way Adayar is–and most importantly how he has come out of both of those gallops, Wednesday and yesterday.”

Hurricane Lane exited the G1 Cazoo St Leger S. with a 2 3/4-length win on Sept. 11, to go with earlier season triumphs in the June 26 G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris. The only concern for the chestnut is ground that could be firmer than he prefers. James Doyle will ride.

Appleby added, “I felt the St Leger was the easiest of his last three victories. I know the Grand Prix de Paris was very emphatic, but what we've seen of him and the figures that we get to see and his general well-being, that's the race he seems to have come out of the best. He hadn't done a piece of work until yesterday morning–he'd gone through routine exercise, but that was his first solid piece of work.

“James was in the saddle and couldn't have been any happier–he moved well and did his usual work. He's always been a pleasing work horse. He's not an exciting work horse–neither are really–but it's just the mannerism in the way they do it, they do it the right way round.

“We're very pleased with the way he has come out of it this morning as well.”

“After discussions, we're very confident if we can have a good week this week that we have two horses going into an Arc in great shape,” Appleby said. “Two exciting horses with two different profiles–and with the way the forecast looks at the moment, it looks as if there's going to be a bit of rain during the course of the week, and that will suit us.

“The only negative I can give to the participation of Hurricane Lane is if it was to become fast ground. That is a conversation that would have to take place nearer the time.”
