TERF, Horsemen U Partner To Promote Continuing Education

The Thoroughbred Education & Research Foundation (TERF) announced today that it will partner with the new Horsemen U website to promote continuing education for Thoroughbred trainers and assistant trainers. TERF will provide a grant of $4,000 to the Horsemen U project, which will cover the cost of the website for a full year.

Horsemen U is a collaboration of the national Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and the California Thoroughbred Trainers. The platform was launched in May to assist trainers and assistant trainers in complying with continuing education requirements, which have been adopted in CaliforniaDelawareMarylandNew YorkVirginia and West Virginia(Click the state to get regulation for that jurisdiction.) The website currently offers 16 CE seminars, covering topics from “Diagnostic Imaging” and “Biosecurity” to the “Musculoskeletal System of the Racehorse” and “Equine Welfare, Horseracing, and the Social License to Operate,” and also hosts live webinars.

TERF, an offshoot of Thoroughbred Charities of America, was established in 2012 to provide focused funding for equine education and research and supports education and research organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The objectives of TERF and Horsemen U dovetail seamlessly.

Dr. Jim Orsini, one of the founders and a Trustee of TERF, said: “Education is the best investment for improving the lives of trainers, assistant trainers, and others in the equine industry. High quality education of equine industry personnel results in improved health and welfare of the horse. Additionally, individuals that complete courses offered by Horsemen U can educate others by mentoring and serving as a role model to create a multiplier effect.”

Dr. Scott Palmer, Equine Medical Director for the New York State Gaming Commission and also a TERF Trustee, spearheaded the first-ever CE regulation for Thoroughbred racing in 2017.

“TERF's mission aligns with several of the primary goals of Horsemen U – education, Thoroughbred horses, safety, health and welfare,” Palmer said. “We couldn't be better connected in our mutual goal to support the Thoroughbred racing industry through education of individuals primarily responsible for the care of Thoroughbred horses.

“By supporting the education of current and future generations of horse care professionals, TERF not only directly enhances the ability of industry stakeholders to improve the health and welfare of the horses in their care, but also provides an opportunity for the Thoroughbred industry to demonstrate its commitment to equine welfare to the general public,” he added.

THA Chairman Alan Foreman applauded the partnership between Horsemen U and TERF.

“Horsemen U was born of the efforts of the Mid-Atlantic stakeholders involved in the Strategic Plan to Reduce Equine Fatalities,” Foreman said. “We have state regulators, racetrack management and horsemen's groups working together to improve the safety of our sport, and continuing education is an important component of the Plan. Joining forces with TERF will strengthen our initiative and help to ensure that our horsemen have the tools they need to provide the best care possible for the horses.”

TERF has distributed more than $700,000 in grants since its inception. The organization relies on the support of generous donors to continue its mission of promoting Thoroughbred health and welfare by funding scholarships, educational programs, and equine research with a priority to make racing safer. Tax-deductible contributions can be made by mailing a check made payable to 'Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation' to: Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) c/o CCCF, 28 West Market Street, West Chester, PA 19382, or by visiting the TERF donation page at www.terfusa.org/donate/.

2022 Irish Fixture List Published

A total of 390 fixtures will be run in Ireland in 2022, with the fixture list published on Tuesday. There are 387 fixtures on the list at this stage with three 'floating fixtures' to be kept in reserve to be programmed at short notice by the Horse Racing Ireland Fixtures Committee. There will be 346 turf fixtures (up from 339 in 2021) and 44 all-weather fixtures (up from 41 this year). Six Sundays have been kept blank-Apr. 24, June 19, July 24, Aug. 28, Sept. 4 and Oct. 9, and the number of Saturday evening meetings has been reduced from four to three-Bellewstown (July 2), Kilbeggan (Aug. 6), and Tramore (Aug. 13). The Flat season begins at The Curragh on Mar. 26, with Dundalk's Winter AWT Finals conducted the day prior on Mar. 25. Held over a week from July 25-31, the Galway Festival will remain a mixed meeting of Flat and National Hunt cards. The full fixture list may be viewed here.

Jason Morris, HRI's Director of Racing, said, “We continue to see strong growth in our horse population numbers (up 19% year-on-year) and average field size figures (up from 11.8 to 12.3 runners per race), and this is reflected in the increased fixture list that we are announcing for 2022. By retaining three meetings to be allocated at short notice during next year, we can retain flexibility to respond quickly to the demands of the horse population as they materialise in 2022.”

Muhaarar’s Israr A TDN Rising Star At Donny

Doncaster's St Leger festival had begun in the wrong way for Shadwell as the 2-year-old Jadhlaan (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) had suffered a fatal injury in the opening race, injuring Jim Crowley in the process, but there was some consolation half an hour later as the homebred Israr (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) earned TDN Rising Star status on debut. Sent off at 8-1 for the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden S. over a mile, the John and Thady Gosden-trained son of the operation's G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. heroine Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was awkwardly away from the wide stall and lost ground veering right under Rab Havlin. Quickly gaining composure to track the leader of his group towards the stand's rail, the bay was green isolated on the wing in the middle part of the race but came alive instantly when asked to close approaching two out. Swooping on the 66-1 shot Savvy Victory (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) inside the final furlong, he asserted to score a shade cosily by half a length, with 1 1/2 lengths back to the winner's stablemate and 5-4 favourite Frantastic (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the full-brother to the dual G1 Champion S. hero Cracksman (GB) who put up a highly encouraging debut effort in his own right. “It's a very laid-back family and a mile-and-a-half family, I loved the way he finished out passing the line and he took a while to pull up,” Havlin said of the March-foaled half-brother to the useful 102-rated handicapper Almighwar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). “Taghrooda and Almighwar were laid-back, but he's a bit quicker–he's smaller, stockier and stronger than them. They went a bit slow early and he was not really taking the bit and racing a bit babyish, but when I gave him a squeeze he was all there for me and finished out well. He's obviously pretty nice and I love his mindset, so hopefully he has a bright future.” Israr, who becomes Muhaarar's second TDN Rising Star after the recent Newmarket winner Razzle Dazzle (GB), is the third foal out of Taghrooda, who was also runner-up in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and third in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe during her stunning 3-year-old campaign. Her dam was the triple listed scorer Ezima (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who was also second in the G2 Lancashire Oaks and hails from the family of the high-class stayers Enzeli (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) and the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).
