Frankel’s Hurricane Lane Dominates The Leger

Considered by some an antiquity against racing's commercial backdrop, Doncaster's G1 Cazoo St Leger is nevertheless kept close to the hearts of all enthusiasts and in Godolphin's Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) it had a winner on Saturday that stands tall among some of its very best. Having scythed through the tasks of the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Grand Prix de Paris earlier this summer, the powerhouse chestnut looked to have outstanding claims for this and he duly delivered as the G1 Epsom Derby form came to the fore. Suffering his sole reversal in the June 4 blue riband, the 8-11 favourite waited until all bar that Classic's runner-up Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) had dropped away to make his move and he brushed him aside two out to settle the result there and then. Galloping out to the line despite running away from William Buick's whip, he registered a commanding 2 3/4-length success from Mojo Star as The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) fared best of the Ballydoyle quartet two lengths away in third. “He was the class horse in the race and it worked out beautifully,” Buick said as he relished a third renewal. “You never know until they go this far, but he took me into the race so nicely and has that turn of foot at the end. He's a great horse and it's been a fantastic season for everyone in the yard. There is always pressure, but that just shows you are on the best horse and it was just a case of keeping it smooth.”

If there was one Classic named as suitable for Hurricane Lane after his debut success over a mile on heavy ground at Newmarket in October, it would have been this but he had demonstrated so much speed by the time he romped on Bastille Day that there had to be a slight doubt about the extended 14-furlong trip. Starting out in 2021 with a win in the Apr. 16 Newbury 10-furlong conditions event that played host to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Star of Seville (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) and Light Shift (Kingmambo) in recent times, he added York's G2 Dante S. to his tally over that trip May 13 to force Buick's hand heading to Epsom. Behind Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Mojo Star there having lost both front shoes, he bounced out of an encounter that would have left a mark on lesser horses to surge to victory in the G1 Irish Derby at The Curragh June 26 prior to his emphatic six-length success in the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris.

Kept wide and out of trouble by Buick in mid-division as Hollie Doyle took Interpretation (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to the front with Mojo Star in close attendance and High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) racing handy. Little changed until the half-mile marker, where Rossa Ryan loomed threateningly on Mojo Star but Hurricane Lane was biding his time out wide and no sooner had the Richard Hannon trainee swooped than the royal blue was arriving at his side. Pounding his way to the finish, the winner produced by far the day's outstanding time performance to add another major prize to his stable's tally.

It was a first St Leger for Charlie Appleby, who said, “It was a fantastic performance. Congratulations to Sheikh Mohammed and Team Godolphin. It's great to win any Classic, but this is historic and so it's extra special. He had a lovely pitch and all the room he needed and the great thing about this horse is he quickens and has a gear change. You couldn't have been more comfortable watching it the whole way round. The ground isn't key to him, but he is more comfortable under these conditions on the slower side.”

“I thought it was a great performance and the Derby form held up as well, with Mojo Star running a great race. It's got strength-in-depth, which is what we want to see in a Classic. This horse has given us a couple of days where he has challenged us–he's a boy and he likes to do things his own way in the mornings sometimes. He takes a bit of managing, so the team have done a great job. The Arc is on everybody's mind. I think it is something we will keep an eye on, but we'll let the dust settle. I see no reason why we wouldn't potentially turn up.”

“As for next year, with him and Adayar that is for everyone to talk about towards the end of the season after the Arc. As two physicals, you can only get excited about them as 4-year-olds. His Highness is such a great sporting man and he loves to see his horses stay in training. We have seen so many of the greats from Godolphin down the years and I'm just fortunate I'm bringing a couple of them along myself.”

This represented a triumph for Normandie Stud, who also bred the previous race's winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on a day to remember for Philippa Cooper's operation. Hurricane Lane's dam is the Listed Prix Denisy winner Gale Force (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), whose first foal was his full-sister Frankel's Storm (GB) who was runner-up in the Listed Junioren-Preis. The second dam Hannda (Ire) (Dr Devious {Ire}) also produced the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. heroine Seal of Approval (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}), who was in turn responsible for the G3 March S. and G3 Princess Royal S.-placed Promissory (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), while another of Gale Force's half-siblings is the G3 Oak Tree S. third Instance (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Hannda is kin to the G3 Concorde S. winner Hamairi (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), the Listed Testimonial S. scorer and G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. runner-up Hanabad (Ire) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) and to the dam of the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Hamariyna (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) and the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil winner Hunaina (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). This is also the family of the G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Irish Derby hero and sire Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Gale Force, who was bought for 300,000gns by Charlie Gordon Watson Bloodstock at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, also has the unraced 2-year-old colt by Harzand's sire named Sweet William (Ire) and a yearling filly by Australia (GB).

Racetrack Managers Program Offers Training To First Group Of Track Professionals, Announces a Second Course

With its online courses continuing to attract national and international participation and the first edition of its in-person Grader School program set to be held in mid-September at Keeneland, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment's Racetrack Managers Certification Program (RMCP), and National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) today announced that it will be launching a second in-person Grader School course in the future.

The Racecourse Manager Certification program curriculum is designed for those already engaged in careers with turf surface maintenance. The online classes are free. Individuals who complete the video courses and pass a test that requires a $50 fee will receive a certificate of completion from the University of Kentucky. Participating Thoroughbred racetracks that enroll their personnel will receive credit toward future accreditation by the NTRA Safety & Integrity Alliance.

The online course offered by the RMCP, “Turf as an Equine Sports Surface,” provides training for professionals by experts from within and outside of horse racing. The second course, dubbed “Grader School,” will debut September 13-15 at Keeneland and offers hands-on training in the use of motor graders for maintaining a safe and consistent depth of dirt and synthetic surfaces.

The first session of Grader School will include a select group of five racetrack maintenance professionals seeking to acquire advanced skills and experience to improve their career progression. The class will be taught by veteran racetrack superintendents Dennis Moore and Alfredo Laureano. Moore is a Southern California-based track superintendent with nearly 50 years of racing experience while Laureano is the track superintendent at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. Both Moore and Laureano have extensive experience with both dirt and synthetic surfaces. Their experiences include maintenance through a range of use and climate conditions and experience with both older graders and state-of-the-art equipment.

The inaugural enrollees for Grader School include:
Brian Brown, Track Maintenance Skilled Laborer, Fair Grounds Race Course (Louisiana)
Derek Pettinger, Assistant Superintendent, Remington Park (Oklahoma)
Keith Stockman, Superintendent, Delaware Park Race Track
Richard Sweeney, Assistant Track Superintendent, Maryland Jockey Club
Stirling “Harrison” Young, Assistant Superintendent, Turf, Colonial Downs (Virginia)

Two scholarships that cover class tuition and include support for lodging expenses have been awarded. The Equinox Racing Award will go to Harrison Young of Colonial Downs. The Horsemen's Track and Equipment scholarship will be awarded to Derek Pettinger of Remington Park. These award recipients were chosen based on their potential for future leadership in racetrack maintenance.

“Maintaining a safe, fair, and consistent racetrack is truly an art form. Experienced and proficient grading of the surface is one of the most vital keys to this entire process for the safety of our world-class equine and human athletes,” said David Richardson, Executive Director of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. “Richard (Sweeney) and the rest of the first class for this program are young and dedicated and the future of our industry.”

Based on the large number of applications and inquiries, a second session of the Grader School will be scheduled in the future. Opportunities for hands-on experience will be extended to both new and experienced operators.

Siyouni’s St Mark’s Basilica Prevails in Irish Champion Thriller

Saturday's G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown may have been short on quantity, but was certainly not lacking in quality as Coolmore's St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) maintained his winning streak at the highest level with a fifth such triumph in a thrilling finale to the €1,000,000 10-furlong contest. Backing up a juvenile high in Newmarket's G1 Dewhurst S., the 3-year-old bay has carried all before him during a banner sophomore campaign,  which has also witnessed victories in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Coral-Eclipse. Forced to sidestep last month's G1 Juddmonte International after suffering a minor setback at home, he had to dig deep to deny three-time elite-level victrix Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) and G1 2000 Guineas and G1 St James's Palace S. hero Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in a three-way drive. Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis third Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) set the tone with a clear advantage through halfway, ahead of Poetic Flare, the eventual winner and Tarnawa as the field maintained its order until turning for home. Bustled along by Ryan Moore passing the quarter-mile marker, the 5-6 favourite drifted wide towards the stands' side rail soon after and kept on in resolute fashion to deny the even-wider effort of Tarnawa by 3/4-of-a-length with Poetic Flare failing to maintain his early-straight advantage and getting edged out of second by a nose. The track's stewards enquired into possible inteference between the first two, but allowed the result to stand after a lengthy deliberation.

“He's a special horse, he relaxes and quickens and has all the determination from Galileo and all the speed from Siyouni,” said winning trainer Aidan O'Brien after extending his record haul in the contest to 10. “Ryan [Moore] gave him a great ride and I'm delighted. They set off at a nice pace, Kevin [Manning] was in second and he steadied it down to get himself straightened up and set up. The pace went out of the race completely before they turned in [for home], which was unusual, and they sprinted up the straight. He did well because it was very tactical and I would imagine the fractions for those last couple of furlongs were fairly rapid. He had a bit of catch-up to do, after [being forced to miss York] the last day, and one thing we knew is that he quickens. That's what he's always had and his strong qualities are that he relaxes and can really turn it on. He's just an exceptional horse and we're very lucky to have him. All the lads at home have done a great job to get him back here today after the last day. The plan was to go to York and then come here. After that we were going to see what way he came out of it and see what way we were going to go.”

Looking to possible future targets, the Ballydoyle conditioner continued, “He has a lot of options, he can go back to a mile or go a mile-and-a-quarter and all those [top-level] races have to be there. There may be a little bit of a problem with the [G1] Queen Elizabeth II S. [at Ascot on Champions Day]. We know that he handles soft ground, but Ascot can be run in very bad ground.”

St Mark's Basilica is one of two Group 1 winners produced by G3 Silver Flash S. victrix Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the other being G1 2000 Guineas and G1 Vertem Futurity-winning sire Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Cabaret has also produced an unraced 2-year-old full-brother to St Mark's Basilica, named Paris Lights (Ire), and a weanling colt by Kingman (GB). She is a half-sister to G3 Solario S. victor Drumfire (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and stakes-winning G2 Gimcrack S. runner-up Ho Choi (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). St Mark Basilica's third dam Fife (Ire) (Lomond) ran third in the Listed Lupe S. and is the second dam of G3 Park S. victrix and G1 Moyglare S. runner-up Ugo Fire (Ire) (Bluebird). Fife is a half-sister to Piffle (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), herself the dam of GI Hollywood Turf Cup S. hero Frenchpark (GB) (Fools Holme) and G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}). This is also the family of the G1 St Leger hero Mountain Lodge (GB) (Blakeney {GB}).
