Jockey Declan Cannon To Miss ‘A Few Months’ With Vertebrae Fractures

In an incident at Indiana Grand on Monday first reported by the Daily Racing Form's Marty McGee, jockey Declan Cannon suffered several fractured vertebrae when his mount Zoikes clipped heels in the fifth race. His agent, Tim Hanisch, told bloodhorse.com Tuesday that the veteran rider had movement in all his extremities, but may require surgery.

“That will put him out for the near future, for a few months,” Hanisch told bloodhorse.com.

Zoikes, trained by Brendan Walsh, was reported to be uninjured in the incident, as were the remaining horses and riders in the race, several of whom had to alter course to avoid the fallen rival. Stewards conducted an inquiry but made no changes.

Cannon, a native of Ireland has ridden 300 winners from 2,839 starters in the United States since moving his tack here in late 2015.

Horse Library & Education Center Part of the Maryland Horse Park

The Maryland Horse Library and Education Center was designated by the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) as the Educational and Cultural Center of the Maryland Horse Park System. The new, multi-faceted facility will honor the history and importance of Maryland's horse industry.

“Maryland is home to over 100,000 horses, more horses per square mile than any other state,” said Secretary Joe Bartenfelder. “With over 40 equine disciplines practiced right here in Maryland and premiere horse events held year-round, our state's equestrian industry is world-renowned. This center will teach Marylanders and visitors from around the world about the remarkable contributions of our horse industry.”

Construction of the 4,500-square-foot center is expected to begin in September and will be open to the public by spring 2022. The center will be located in the Maryland Horse Breeders Association's (MHBA's) building in historic Reisterstown, centrally located close to Pimlico Race Course, Sagamore Farm, and other popular equine destinations. Once completed, the facility will house over 1,000 equestrian books, a memorabilia area, versatile meeting rooms, a media center, interactive kiosks and rotating exhibits.

“This one-of-a-kind facility in Maryland will serve as a central learning and research hub for horse sports in the state,” said MHIB Chair Jim Steele. “It is our intention for the center to educate the public about the breadth of Maryland's horse industry and to motivate them to get involved. I want to thank all of the individuals who have been involved in making the center a reality, it is your hardwork and dedication that has made this all possible.”

George Barnes Promoted To President Of KatieRich Farms

KatieRich Farms, a recognized boutique horse breeding, training and boarding farm in Midway, Ky., has announced that Mark Hubley, who has been with the farm since its inception, has stepped down as president but will continue on as a consultant.

George Barnes, who was most recently vice president, has been tapped to fill the role. As president, Barnes will work closely with Farm Manager Tammy Ingebritson in the day-to-day activity of the farm, while also overseeing bloodstock research, stallion matings and sales. In addition, Danny Leitch has been promoted from assistant trainer to trainer, where he will be responsible for all training duties at the farm as well as Rice Road. The management changes go into effect immediately.

“On behalf of everyone at KatieRich Farms, we want to thank Mark for his many contributions to the farm since its inception,” said Larry and Karen Doyle, owners of KatieRich Farms. “He has been with us every step of the way – from a trainer to farm visionary to president – and we wouldn't be where we are today without his vision, experience, knowledge and business acumen. Moving forward, we are so grateful we can still tap into his expertise in a consulting capacity.”

George Barnes entered his role as vice president of KatieRich Farms in 2018. He has been involved in the thoroughbred industry since graduating from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Animal Science in 2014. Barnes previously worked at Blackburn Farm and the Larry Jones Racing Stable. He completed his Masters in Business Administration from Midway University in 2021.

For as long as Daniel Leitch can remember, horses have been a part of his life. After walking hots and cleaning stalls during summers and school breaks, he joined Katie Rich Farms in the fall of 2012 for foaling season on weekends and then fulltime after graduating in 2013. His responsibilities have evolved over the last decade from sales prepping and breaking yearlings to assistant trainer and now his new position as trainer.

“With his astute familiarity of bloodlines, pedigrees and breeding trends along with his extensive contacts in the Lexington area, George Barnes, along with Daniel Leitch, who I've watched mature into a consummate professional, will resolutely lead the farm into a successful future,” said Mark Hubley, outgoing president of KatieRich Farms. “I have the utmost confidence that they will both make great contributions to the farm in the coming years.”
