Dermot Ryan Named Ted Bates Farm Manager of the Year

Ashford Stud's Dermot Ryan was named the 2021 Ted Bates Farm Manager of the Year, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers' Club announced Tuesday.

Ryan has long been a supporter of the club, through donations, involvement in club events, and encouraging participation from other Ashford Stud employees. With his blessing, Ashford Stud hosted the inaugural KTFMC 5K in 2016 and has expressed interest in hosting again in the future. He has supported other programs such as KEMI by taking students each session and has served on many boards and committees industry wide.

He grew up in Tipperary, Ireland about an hour away from Coolmore. He had exposure to horses, thanks to his parents Malachy and Miriam, riding, hunting and showjumping from a young age. After leaving school, Ryan completed the Irish National Stud course. From there, he went to work at Coolmore at the age of 19 for eight years before coming to Coolmore America in December 1992, where he has remained ever since.

While in America, Ryan met his wife Debbie. Ryan is currently a Director of the KTA/KTOB and is on the Board of Directors at the Gluck Center.

“It has been amazing to see Ashford grow through the vision of John Magnier and his family,” Ryan said. “I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to be a steward of such a wonderful place, to be around such amazing horses and work with wonderful people. It has been as much of a pleasure seeing young horses progress and go on to be successful as it has been seeing the success of the young people, past and present that have come through Ashford. We have a lot to be grateful for working in such a fantastic industry here in central Kentucky and I am very thankful to all of the breeders who have supported us and have been a great pleasure to work with over the years. I am very humbled and thankful to all at the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Manager's Club for this award.”

John Magnier added, “The horses and people at Ashford are always at the forefront of his mind. He is the real deal, and it is a great honour for him to receive this award. We are proud to have been associated with him and his family for such a long time, it is very well deserved and comes as no surprise to us.”

M.V. Magnier said, “It is a great honour to see Dermot receive such a well-deserved award and we are delighted to see that others see what we see on a daily basis. We have been very lucky to have him at Coolmore for so long, he is a great guy and if he wasn't in this business, he could have turned his hand to anything.”

Bill Banning Horse Slaughter Reintroduced in Senate

A bipartisan group of federal lawmakers reintroduced legislation to permanently ban horse slaughter in the United States and end the current export of American horses for slaughter Tuesday. Sponsored by U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, the Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act is supported by leading animal welfare groups, including the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), the Animal Welfare Institute, the Humane Society of the United States, the Humane Society Legislative Fund, and Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation.

“The gruesome practice of slaughtering horses for food has no place in the United States, and it's well past time for Congress to say once and for all that horsemeat is not what's for dinner,” said Sen. Menendez. “Horses are routinely treated with drugs that are dangerous for human consumption and do not belong in our nation's food supply. Our bipartisan legislation will help put an end to the cruel and inhumane slaughter of horses while protecting families from toxic horse meat and safeguarding the reputation of the U.S. food industry worldwide.”

“Horses hold a special place in our history and culture, and the practice of slaughtering them to satisfy foreign appetites simply does not reflect the admiration we have for these animals,” said Sen. Collins. “In an effort to protect horses, this legislation would deter the transport or purchase of horses for human consumption.”

“The overwhelming majority of Americans oppose horse slaughter for human consumption and the ASPCA is working resolutely to solve equine welfare issues on the ground, but we cannot fully succeed while the slaughter pipeline remains open,” said Nancy Perry, senior vice president of Government Relations for the ASPCA. “We thank Senators Menendez, Graham, Whitehouse, and Collins for their leadership on this bill, and urge Congress to pass the SAFE Act to finally end this cruel, unnecessary practice and provide protections to American horses and the people who love them.”

The SAFE Act was previously excluded from the infrastructure bill that passed the senate last month. Earlier this year, U.S. Reps. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., introduced the SAFE Act (H.R. 3355) in the U.S. House of Representatives, which has not yet voted on the aforementioned infrastructure bill.

Air Force Blue Gelding Upsets Prince of Wales

Haddassah (Air Force Blue) took to dirt with aplomb to upset Tuesday's Prince of Wales S., the second jewel of Canada's Triple Crown.

The 6-1 chance, third in the GIII Marine S. July 11 and eighth after getting rank early in the Queen's Plate last time Aug. 22, both over the Woodbine all-weather, chased in second as they passed the Fort Erie grandstand for the first time. He remained in a perfect, stalking position through a half mile in :47.30, made his move to take over on the far turn and dug down gamely in the stretch to hold Harlan Estate (Kantharos) safe for a one-two finish for trainer Kevin Attard.

A debut winner in an off-the-turfer at Woodbine last November, the Al and Bill Ulwelling homebred was a well-beaten third in grassy allowance at Woodbine June 13 prior to his two aforementioned stakes tries.

This is the second stakes winner for young sire Air Force Blue and sixth stakes winner for broodmare sire Whywhywhy.

Ten-time winner and multiple stakes-placed Lady Haddassah, claimed by Al and Bill Ulwelling for $16,000 at Oaklawn in 2013, is also responsible for the unraced 2-year-old gelding Haddassah's Devil (Daredevil); a yearling colt by Lookin At Lucky; and a colt by Mo Town of this year. She was bred back to Air Force Blue.
