Sheldon Russell Set For Surgery
Maryland's leading rider this season Sheldon Russell will undergo have surgery to repair an injury to his right foot suffered in a pre-race spill Sept. 9 at Laurel Park. The 34-year-old received the news Monday after visiting Dr. Jacob Wisbeck, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle injuries at MedStar Health in Timonium, Md. Russell said a date for surgery won't be determined before a follow-up visit Sept. 20.
“What we found out is it's the main bone in the foot and needs to be addressed,” Russell said. “If I opted not to do the surgery and heal it by myself there's chances of dislocation [and other complications]. He's given me another week to get the swelling down.”
Russell said he was diagnosed with a Lisfranc injury, involving both the bones and ligaments in middle part of his foot, due to the way he landed and causing separation between his first two toes. Surgery may include inserting hardware to stabilize the area.
“I'll sit down with him next Monday at 8 o'clock and we'll X-ray the foot [again]. Hopefully, some of the swelling has gone down and we can sort of schedule something,” he added. “Right now, that's probably the route I'm taking to do the right thing. I'm going to be off regardless, so why not get it fixed properly.”
Russell was hurt after being thrown when Little Bit of That, a 2-year-old Maryland-bred Great Notion filly trained by his wife, Brittany Russell, reared in the post parade of her scheduled first start. She got loose and was scratched from the maiden special weight event, and is entered again to make her debut Thursday under jockey Forest Boyce.

NJSIAA Appoints Paul Popadiuk as CCO
Paul Popadiuk has been named the new chief compliance officer of the NJSIAA, effective January 2022. The Hillsborough resident will be assuming the duties currently held by Kim DeGraw-Cole, who will be scaling back her responsibilities while serving in a consulting capacity for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. In his new role, Popadiuk will oversee all compliance-related matters, including those involving eligibility, transfer compliance, and controversies/disputes. Currently the principal at Montgomery High School, he served for over two decades as an educator and has held various volunteer positions with the NJISAA since 2016.
“Paul has been a tremendous resource for NJSIAA over the past five years, and I am very excited to bring his experience and skills to our office,” said Colleen Maguire, NJSIAA executive director. “Of course, as we all know, he has very big shoes to fill. Kim has been a remarkable asset for the NJSIAA since joining the association in 2010. She's been a mentor to me, and I'm extremely grateful she will be around to assist with the transition.”

Churchill To Honor John Asher, Col. Matt Winn
Churchill Downs Racetrack will host a public ceremony Sept. 16 at 11:00a.m. to dedicate and unveil commissioned statues that honor the late John Asher and Col. Matt Winn. The statues, sculpted by local artist Raymond Graf, depict Asher sitting on a horse shoe bench and talking with Winn, who oversaw the early growth of the Kentucky Derby into America's greatest race. The statues are positioned on the north side of the saddling paddock in the Plaza area. Churchill Downs officials, Graf and members of the Asher and Winn families will be on hand. The general public is invited to attend the ceremony free of charge. Free first-come, first-serve parking is available to media and guests in the Red and White parking lots off Central Ave. and Kentucky Derby Dr.
