Logician Retired To Shade Oak Stud

Juddmonte's St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Scuffle {GB}, by Daylami {Ire}) has been retired from racing and will take up stallion duties at Shade Oak Stud in Shropshire from 2022.

The 5-year-old has been bought by a partnership with includes Shade Oak's owner Peter Hockenhull, Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning breeder Bryan Mayoh and Grand National-winning trainer Dr Richard Newland. Juddmonte will also retain some breeding rights in the son of the Daylami (Ire) mare Scuffle (GB), a listed-placed treble winner who is a half-sister to the stallions Bated Breath (GB) and Cityscape (GB).

“The purchase of Logician is the culmination of a four-year search to bring another top-class stallion prospect to Shade Oak, one with all the qualities needed in a champion National Hunt sire. Logician ticks every box,” said Peter Hockenhull, who currently stands Dartmouth (GB), Telescope (Ire), Scorpion (Ire) and Recharge (Ire).

He added, “He is by Frankel, the best racehorse I have ever seen and now succeeding his own sire, Galileo, as the world's best stallion, from a black-type mare that has bred six winners from six runners, including four black-type horses, and is herself a half-sister to Cityscape and Bated Breath. He stands 16.2hh with great bone, plenty of strength and substance, a lovely walk and a fantastic temperament.”

Unraced at two, Logician was faultless in a five-start 3-year-old campaign, which saw him break his maiden at Newbury in May over 10 furlongs and culminated in back-to-back wins in the G2 Great Voltigeur S. and G1 St Leger, in which he beat future classy stayers Sir Ron Priestley (GB) and Nayef Road (Ire), as well as subsequent G1 Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet (Ire). He returned to the track almost exactly a year later, having survived a life-threatening attack of peritonitis and pleurisy at the end of his 3-year-old season.

Despite Shade Oak Stud and the horse's new connections being predominantly active in the National Hunt sphere, Hockenhull said that he hopes to encourage Flat breeders to send mares to Logician.

He continued, “I am encouraged that Juddmonte were keen to retain breeding rights in the horse for use on their own mares, so I look forward to some high-class runners by him not only over jumps but also on the Flat. I am extremely grateful to the Abdullah family for supporting British breeding by selling Logician to a stud in this country, and to Grant Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock, whose long-term association with Juddmonte, Prince Khalid's family and this pedigree helped us greatly in this transaction.”

Hockenhull added, “The Great British Bonus and NH Elite Mares Schemes, championed by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association and supported by the Levy Board, are transforming the prospects for British breeders, making it possible for studs here to purchase stallions of the quality of Logician.”

As a 3-year-old, Logician, who became Frankel's first Classic-winning son, earned a Timeform rating of 126p. He won on his comeback at four in a Doncaster conditions race, and has been placed in his only starts this season, in the G3 Al Rayyan S. and listed Fred Archer S.

His former trainer John Gosden said, “Logician was still improving when he won the St Leger, quickening in the style of his sire. We planned a major Group 1 campaign over 10 and 12 furlongs as a 4-year-old–he was that good——but unfortunately illness got in the way. As well as fantastic physique and tremendous stride, Logician has a great mind. Nothing fazes him and he puts everything into his racing. He has all the ingredients to be an outstanding dual-purpose sire.”

Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon added, “From the start, Logician was a special horse, a standout yearling among the Juddmonte crop that year. His size, strength and beautiful action, combined with good conformation, had everyone excited from an early stage and he didn't disappoint. His unbeaten 3-year-old season ended with a dominant victory in the St Leger.

“We have no doubt he was one of the very best middle-distance horses around. Being by Frankel, and given his exceptional physique and performance, Logician is a huge asset to British breeding. Shade Oak have guided many top-class stallions through their careers and I'm sure they have another top-class prospect on their hands.”

A fee for Logician will be announced at a later date.

Lots Of Older Horses Are Dealing With Chronic Pain, But Their Owners May Not Know It

Almost all older horses suffer from chronic pain, and one veterinarian believes many of their owners can't tell. Dr. Alex Bianco, clinical faculty in large animal internal medicine at the University of Minnesota told The Horse that chronic pain often factors into the decision to euthanize a horse but many horsemen fail to recognize it in its early stages.

Bianco cited a 2020 Swiss study that used 182 responses from experienced horse owners who considered their horses sound. When veterinarians examined the horses, they found that 100 of the horses in the study were considered a grade 2 or higher on the AAEP lameness scale, which is scored up to 5.

Adding to the challenge, older horses are often not given lameness exams, which leaves them at risk of suffering from unmanaged pain. Bianco also pointed out however that the same Swiss study acknowledged horse owners have a high level of trust in their veterinarians.

Bianco reported that options to address chronic pain include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opiates, gabapentin, acetaminophen (though liver toxicity may be a concern) and ketamine. Therapeutic options are also available and include corticosteroid injections into joints, topical diclofenac, therapeutic shoeing, transecting ligament, tendon or nerves to remove pain, or surgical fusing of joints.

Bianco said the key to improved welfare for older horses is making sure owners know they need to have their horses evaluated by their veterinarians regularly.

Rothschild Glory For Zoffany’s Mother Earth

It was tight at the finish of Deauville's G1 Prix Rothschild on Tuesday, but when the going gets tough you can rely on Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) to give her all and that was enough to provide Aidan O'Brien with another highlight in France this year. Admirably consistent since her success in the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket May 2, the 19-10 favourite who was a latest runner-up in the G1 Falmouth S. on Newmarket's July Course July 9 was happy to follow the leaders early. When Ryan Moore asked the question, she responded typically gamely to gain a narrow lead on the stand's side with 300 metres remaining and battle all the way to the line. There was a head to Sagamiyra (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) in second, with a short head separating her and another of the French-trained older fillies in Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) also involved in the four-way go the same margin away. “I didn't have the best trip and had to move a little bit earlier than I wanted, so she had to be very brave to win,” the winning rider said.

Out early at two, Mother Earth was second as Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was third behind the smart Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) over an extended five furlongs at Navan in June before finishing third in the G3 Albany S. nine days later at Royal Ascot. Coming back strong to record a four-length success in the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies' Sprint S. over the same six-furlong trip at Naas in early July, the bay was third in The Curragh's G2 Airlie Stud S. before moving up to seven furlongs to finish in the same spot in the G2 Debutante S. back at the latter venue in August. Only 11th under forcing tactics in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. over the same course and distance in September, she rounded off her campaign with a third in the G1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket in October and second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Relishing the fast surface at Newmarket for the 1000 Guineas, she may have found deep conditions against her when outsprinted by Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp a fortnight later and again had soft ground to contend with when third in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 18. The Falmouth had looked very strong form this week as Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) went on to significant big-race success and Mother Earth was adding more ballast with this gutsy effort. When it came down to a straight fight to the line with The Aga Khan's unexposed Sagamiyra, she refused to relinquish and in a race with no hard-luck stories emerged best as her form entitled her to.

Aidan O'Brien, whose French visits this season have culminated in wins in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, G1 Prix du Jockey Club, the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, said, “She is a lovely consistent filly and we have been blessed this year, but only because we're very lucky to train so many well-bred horses. Ryan gave her a great ride and she loves racing and takes it well. She's a very professional filly, she settles very well, relaxes and then quickens. She doesn't do that much then she gets to the front and waits a little bit, but that's not a bad trait. I think we'll probably stay at a mile, she's professional at a mile and she likes the pace that the milers go. I'd say the [Aug. 15 G1] Prix Jacques le Marois is definitely a possibility, because she is so professional but we'll see how she comes out of it and see what the lads want to do. All those races are open to her, she was in the Breeders' Cup last year and she ran a big race and was finishing well that day.”

Mikel Delzangles said of Sagamiyra, “We are never happy to be second, but the filly fully lived up to our expectations and she proved courageous. She is a genuine miler who may perhaps go a bit longer. Up against genuine high-class opposition, she really battled until the bitter end. It's obvious that it's better to be racing along the rail at Deauville, but, given her eight draw, this was always going to be a tough task. Regarding the future, nothing is decided. However, there are numerous options open to her–even if it isn't easy travelling this year.”

Frederic Rossi retains hope that Speak of the Devil can make the breakthrough after going so close again. “Stephane Pasquier has given the filly a peach of a ride. When she loomed on the scene going the final 200 metres, I thought that she was going to win because she has a powerful finishing kick,” he commented. “There was nothing in it at the finish and it proves that she can win her group 1 race before the end of the season, although I don't know which one it will be yet. To be in the line-up of the Prix Rothschild was already quite a daring gambit, but wow! I'm really happy. Especially as the filly carries of the colours of an owner that I have a lot of time for and which is investing in the yard. I hope that we will have enjoy many years of considerable success together.”

Mother Earth is out of Many Colours (GB) (Green Desert), who captured the Listed Dance Design S. and was second in the G3 Denny Cordell & Lanwades Stud Fillies S. before producing the G2 Premio Dormello winner Night Colours (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}). The second dam First of Many (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) is a full-sister to the G3 Lillie Langtry S. runner-up Without a Trace (Ire) and a half to the Listed Marygate S. winner Patience Alexander (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) who was also third in the G3 Albany S. She is related to the G3 Anglesey S. and G3 Molecomb S. winner Lady Alexander (Ire) (Night Shift), dam of the G3 Palace House S.-winning sire of note Dandy Man (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}) and to Anthem Alexander (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who took the G2 Queen Mary S. and was placed in the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Commonwealth Cup. Galileo Gold’s Oscula Makes All in the Six Perfections

Fresh off a fourth in Newmarket's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. last month, Nick Bradley Racing's 2-year-old filly Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) stepped forward to register a pillar-to-post victory in Tuesday's G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing at Deauville. The April-foaled bay had previously snagged two of her first three starts, including Epsom's June 4 Woodcote S., and hit the board in the June 18 G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot. Sharply into stride and seizing immediate control of this seven-furlong test, the 43-5 chance was largely untroubled throughout and maintained a relentless tempo under continued rousting in the straight to comfortably hold the hitherto undefeated Listed Prix Roland de Chambure victrix Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and fellow British raider Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths and a neck.

“She is blessed with plenty of talent and is an easy filly to ride,” said jockey Ryan Moore after securing a first win in the contest. “She had won well [in the Woodcote] at Epsom and ran with credit after that in two Group races. She deserved to win a race like this.”

Winning trainer George Boughey, after notching a first pattern-race win of his own, added, “I think she appreciated running on soft ground again, she was very good and toughed it out. It was very quick [going] when she ran at Newmarket the other day and Ryan [Moore] gave her a peach of a ride here. She's quite a progressive filly and it was nice to see her stay the seven furlongs. She's always shown that she could do it and it's nice to see her putting it into action and winning a Group race. She should be a lot of fun for the owners going forward and I imagine she could get a mile. It wouldn't be a surprise to see her go back to France for the [G1] Prix Marcel Boussac at the end of the year on Arc day. It's a lot of hard work that goes into it at home and huge credit to everyone.”

Oscula, half-sister to a yearling colt by Kessaar (Ire), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by a half-sister to Listed Silken Glider S. and Listed Rothesay S. placegetter Coeur d'Amour (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). She becomes the third black-type scorer for her freshman sire (by Paco Boy {Ire}). Descendants of her dual-winning third dam Refined (Ire) (Statoblest {Ire})) include G2 Mill Reef S. scorer and G1 Golden Jubilee S. runner-up Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil), G3 Molecomb S. and G3 Sirenia S. winner Brown Sugar (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), fellow G3 Sirenia S. victor Burnt Sugar (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and stakes-winning G3 Prix de Cabourg runner-up Darkanna (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).
