Hudson Ridge Looks To Stay Hot in La Jolla

Hudson Ridge (American Pharoah) carries a baby two-race winning streak into Sunday's GIII La Jolla H. at Del Mar, the second of two-lead up races for the GII Del Mar Derby Sept. 4.

The bay colt has yet to run a poor race going two turns on the grass and nearly got the job done going a mile at Santa Anita May 1, missing by a neck while dead-heating for the plce spot with next-out maiden scorer No Foolery Here (Carpe Diem). Encouraged by Abel Cedillo, trainer Bob Baffert entered Hudson Ridge in the May 23 Cinema S. going nine panels, and the colt responded with a 1 1/4-length defeat of the re-opposing Sword Zorro (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). The 9-5 chalk for a first-level allowance in Arcadia June 18, Hudson Ridge bested Flashiest (Mizzen Mast) by 1 1/4 lengths, the form of which was franked when the latter returned to upset the opening-day Oceanside S. July 16. No Foolery Here was beaten a neck into third.

Stilleto Boy (Shackleford) tries the turf for the first time Sunday afternoon. Having finished second to GII West Virginia Derby favorite Mr. Wireless (Dialed In) in an Oaklawn maiden back in March, the chestnut graduated the following month and most recently carried Jose Ortiz to a 4 1/2-length upset of the Iowa Derby July 2. The gelding was purchased by Steve Moger for $420,000 at last month's Fasig-Tipton Horses of All Ages Sale and is out of a mare that posted a record of 3-1-4 from 11 starts on the turf.

Driver Saved By Dust Sheet In Scary Moment On Australian Harness Track

Australian harness driver Matthew McCaffery and his pacer Gracenava found themselves in a sticky situation Tuesday evening at Young Harness Racing Club in Young, New South Wales. Harnesslink.com shared the story of the incident, where all of the horses and drives involved came out relatively unscathed, with only minor injuries the aftermath of the scary moment on the Young oval.

Coming out of the final turn of their 1720-meter pace, the pair's sulky was checked by another entry. This bounced McCaffery out of his seat and onto the dust sheet, the panel stretched between the sulky's shafts which keeps dust and other debris from being kicked back in the driver's face during the race. Gracenava took a few wobbly strides but was able to stay on course while McCaffery climbed back into his seat.

Gracenava's wobble tripped up two other drivers and their horses, both sulkies upended and the drivers catapulted out of their seats. Kulani Courage and driver Mat Rue came away with nothing more than scraped knees for Kulani Courage. The other horse Sheza Cracker was treated for lacerations, with driver James Locke not injured in the incident.

Minzaal Sustains Minor Setback

Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), winner of the G2 Gimcrack S. and third in the G1 Middle Park S., has suffered another setback and will miss an intended return in a conditions stakes at Nottingham. The Shadwell runner required surgery on a leg injury sustained in his box which ruled him out of the first half of this campaign, and, after a work on Wednesday, had another minor setback.

Trainer Owen Burrows is undeterred however and said, “Unfortunately Minzaal has had a bit of a setback, and we won't be declaring him at Nottingham. He worked on Wednesday–we were happy with that and we were happy with him on Thursday.

“I just didn't think he quite moved right yesterday, however. It is nothing bad, but enough to stop us from declaring him for Tuesday. It is a bit of a blow to get him this close, because everything until Friday had gone according to plan. We will know a bit more in a few days if it is going to be a hold-up for a week or so, or if it will be something that will keep him out for longer.”

He added, “We've had such a great run with him the whole way through, and he hadn't missed a day. The team at Shadwell had done a great job with him as well.

“We felt this race [at Nottingham] was perfect timing-wise, because it would have brought him on a ton before going to the Sprint Cup. We are not going to go straight back into a Group One with him on his first run back, so the Sprint Cup will be knocked on the head.

“There is a listed race at York on Sept. 5 [Garrowby S.], and if it is only a little hold-up that could be an option. As far as we know, we have got him next season.”
