Beat Ray At Del Mar: Can Bernier Ride The Pacific Classic Wave?

Surf's up for the biggest day of the 2021 summer race meet at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., with the Grade 1, $1 million TVG Pacific Classic headlining Saturday's 11-race program that includes five graded stakes and a mandatory payout in the 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6 where the Jackpot has grown to nearly $1.9 million.  The Pick 6 begins at approximately 7:34 p.m. ET with the sixth race.

The Pacific Classic, the 10th race on the card with a 9:33 p.m. ET post time, is also Saturday's Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss contest race, and we've got the host of the insightful The Matt Bernier Show, from the In the Money Media Network, to analyze this year's field. Bernier, who you also may know from NBC Sports racing telecasts, joins host and racing analyst Michelle Yu to try and “Beat Ray” as the weekly Beach Boss guest handicapper. Matt and I land on different horses in the Pacific Classic, while the normally contrarian Michelle likes both of our horses' chances.

Beat Ray Beach Boss Contest is a free-to-enter competition where players wager a mythical $100 each day during the summer meet. When the season ends on Labor Day, the player with the biggest bankroll wins two VIP tickets to the Breeders' Cup. Details and registration can be found here. It's not too late to sign up.

Watch their analysis and see who they put their mythical $100 on in the Pacific Classic.

Frankel’s Rumi Gets Up In The Nonette

It was as tight as it gets at the finish of the 10-furlong G2 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville on Saturday, with Rumi (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) inching out Penja (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) as the home-trained fillies came out on top again as they had been in the Calvados earlier on the card. Coming in off a break having finished sixth in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp May 24 and ninth in the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly June 20, Al Shira'aa Farms' Apr. 11 G3 Prix Vanteaux winner tracked the pace closely on the inside as Gerald Mosse saved ground throughout. Challenging between rivals inside the last 50 metres, the 35-1 outsider had her nose down on the line to deny the G3 Prix de Psyche scorer Penja as Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) joined in with a flourish down the outside to be a short neck off them in third. “She had run only once as a 2-year-old and was moderate first time out this year, but in hindsight it was a little bit too early to be bringing her back,” trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias said. “After her fight in the group 3, she was maybe not prepared for all that and lacked freshness and experience in her next races. She wasn't really disgraced in the Diane and was running on at the end, so I gave her a good break and she'd been working well and was very fresh so it was probably what she needed. We'll target the [G1 Prix de l'] Opera [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 3]–we have seven weeks, so that's plenty of time and we'll see how she goes there before the owners decide if they want to keep her in training as a 4-year-old.”

Rumi, who cost €700,000 at the 2019 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, is out of Secrete (Fr}) (Cape Cross {Ire}) whose first foal was the G3 Prix Noailles third Normandy Eagle (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and whose third is the Listed Bluebell S. scorer Solage (GB) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire). The second dam is the Wertheimers' Featherquest (GB) (Rainbow Quest), a half-sister to Groom Dancer who was responsible for the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and the G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Balladeuse (Fr) (Singspiel {Ire}). Plumania produced three black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Plumatic (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), as well as the dam of the Listed Prix Zarkava scorer and G1 Prix Saint Alary third Solsticia (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}), while Balladeuse is also the dam a trio of that ilk including the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Left Hand (GB) also by Dubawi. Secrete, who is also linked to the G1 Poule d'Essai de Poulains-winning sire Falco (Pivotal {GB}), has a 2-year-old colt by Galileo (Ire) and a yearling colt by Roaring Lion with the latter selling to David Redvers for €100,000 at this week's Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale.

Our Flash Drive Seeks Third Straight Win in Ontario Colleen

Our Flash Drive (Ghostzapper) looks to extend her hot streak in Sunday's GIII Ontario Colleen S. at Woodbine. After two unsuccessful starts at Saratoga, the Live Oak homebred broke through in her first try on the local synthetic June 19. She followed suit with a decisive score in the two-turn GIII Selene S. July 10 and tried turf for the first time here. Her trainer Mark Casse also saddles Salty as Can Be (Into Mischief), who captured a local optional claimer last time July 15; and I Get It (Get Stormy), last seen fading to ninth in the GIII Wonder Again S. June 3.

Fourth on debut behind Seasons (Tapit) in her two-turn debut on the Saratoga lawn last August, Misspell (American Pharoah) earned her diploma next out at Churchill in September. The Peter Brant colorbearer rallied to finish a nose second last out in a Saratoga optional claimer July 17.

Chuck Fipke homebred Speightstown Shirl (Speightstown) is also worth a look in this test. Second in her first three attempts, the bay graduated next out on the local lawn June 12 and was a close second again in a two-turn allowance at this oval July 23.
