OwnerView To Host In-Person Thoroughbred Owner Conference Coinciding With Breeders’ Cup

OwnerView announced today that registration is now open for an in-person Thoroughbred Owner Conference, which will be held Wednesday, November 3, in Del Mar, Calif., to coincide with the Breeders' Cup World Championships on November 5-6.

“Our monthly virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference series has been enthusiastically received this year with more than 1,100 registrations, so we are excited to carry this momentum forward and return to hosting a live event during the week of the Breeders' Cup,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “We are looking forward to again offering existing and prospective Thoroughbred owners the invaluable face-to-face networking opportunities that have made the Thoroughbred Owner Conference such a popular event since its inception.”

This year's conference will include several panels of expert speakers as well as social events to facilitate networking. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase Breeders' Cup tickets with registration.

Registration details can be found at ownerview.com/event/conference, and more information about the conference schedule and host hotel information will be posted on the OwnerView site in the coming weeks.

The virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference series will continue on the first Tuesday of each month through December. The sixth session of the series, “Jockeys,” will be held on Tuesday, August 3, at 2 p.m. ET. It is sponsored by Airdrie Stud, Starlight Racing, and The Green Group. It will be moderated by former track announcer Tom Durkin, and panelists will include retired jockeys Donna Barton Brothers, Chris McCarron, and Gary Stevens. OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Jockeys and Jeans Sept. 11 at Monmouth

The annual Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser will be held this year at Monmouth Park on Sept. 11 with all proceeds going directly to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. In addition to honoring seven riders who suffered career-ending injuries, this year's fundraiser will also honor first responders on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Last year's fundraiser, scheduled to be held at Churchill Downs, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year's event will be special for several reasons,” said Barry Pearl, president of Jockeys and Jeans. “This promises to be a year of recovery for our nation, horse racing and its permanently disabled jockeys.

“Our event will present a unique opportunity to pay homage to racing's fallen heroes as well as our nation's 9/11 heroes. To do both at a single racing-related event is personally humbling and should make all in racing proud.”

The event's organizing committee is working with several New York-based 9/11 organizations to have first responders attend the event and be honored.

“We plan to make a donation to an appropriate charity that helps these brave men and women and the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice,” said Pearl.

Among the Hall of Fame riders slated to attend are Braulio Baeza, Bill Boland, Angel Cordero, Jr., Pat Day, Ramon Dominguez, Earlie Fires, Eddie Maple, Chris McCarron, Craig Perret, Don Pierce, Laffit Pincay, Jr., Jose Santos, Alex Solis, Jacinto Vasquez, Jorge Velasquez, Bobby Ussery and committee member Sandy Hawley. Also scheduled to attend are jockeys who suffered career-ending injuries, including Dennis Collins, Joe Hayes, Armando Rivera, Mike Straight, Ann Van Rosen, Sidney Underwood and committee member Roger Blanco.

The event begins in Monmouth Park's Turf Club at 11:30 a.m. Tickets cost $75 and may be purchased at seatgeek.com/monmouth. There will be a silent auction of racing-related memorabilia and autograph sessions throughout the day.

Showcasing’s Ehraz A New Rising Star At Ascot

Shadwell's 180,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 graduate Ehraz (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) encountered a race-fit Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) when running on for a two-length second in his July 9 debut tackling seven furlongs at Newmarket. Justifying odds-on favouritism in Friday's renowned six-furlong Crocker Bulteel Maiden at Ascot, the flamboyant chestnut left 10 rivals floundering in his wake and powered to 'TDN Rising Stardom' by daylight. The 4-9 pick broke in the second rank and found cover in a handy fourth through the early fractions. Angled into the clear approaching the quarter-mile pole, he cruised to the front hard on the bridle with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and powered clear under minimal coaxing in the latter stages to easily outclass Buoyant (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) by an impressive 4 1/4 lengths.

“He ran a super race first time out at Newmarket when he was slowly away,” said winning rider Jim Crowley. “He'd been like that at home so the winner got away from him although I think he was beaten by a very good horse. He felt like a seven-furlong horse when I rode him work and, dropping back a furlong, I think he did it nicely. He's going to get quicker for racing and, being by Showcasing, I think he'll be just as effective on softer ground. He's got a lovely temperament and is very laid back. This race always throws up a good horse and, hopefully, he keeps progressing.”

Ehraz is the first of three foals produced by an unraced half-sister to G1 King's Stand S. third and G2 Temple S.-winning sire Pearl Secret (GB) (Compton Place {GB}). The March-foaled chestnut is full-brother to a weanling filly and half to a yearling colt by Havana Grey (GB). His stakes-winning second dam Our Little Secret (Ire) (Rossini) is the leading performer out of a multiple-winning half-sister to G3 Premio Omenoni victrix Palacegate Episode (Ire) (Drumalis {Ire}). Descendants of the latter include G3 Polar Cup-winning Scandinavian champion King Quantas (Ire) (Danehill), G3 Anglesey S. placegetter Kamado (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) and Listed Flame of Tara S. runner-up Longing To Dance (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).
