Multiple Safety-Related Violations Results in 4 1/2-Month Suspension for Jockey Salles

After racking up three safety-related riding penalties–two of which caused racing accidents within the first four weeks of the meet–jockey Leo Salles has been suspended by the Woodbine Racetrack stewards through Dec. 5.

Salles, 27, a Brazilian native who has previously ridden in the Middle East, told the Toronto Sun that he accepted responsibility for the latest accident on July 11 and won't be appealing the ruling, although he did term the suspension as overly harsh.

“I think I deserve some days, but I just think it was extreme,” Salles told the Sun. “I apologized. I care about my [jockey] friends. I just think it is part of horse racing. We know this game is dangerous and this could happen to everybody.”

Salles's 2020 season at Woodbine also ended prematurely because he had to sit out a 45-day suspension issued for “endangering the health and safety of another jockey and his horse” in an Aug. 9 race.

On Woodbine's 2021 season-opening card June 12, Salles racked up suspensions in back-to-back races: One was for three days for causing interference. The other was for 10 days for causing a spill that sent Rafael Hernandez, last year's leading rider at Woodbine, to the hospital with a hairline vertebra fracture.

On July 11, Salles's 58-1 maiden mount appeared to be out of contention near the back of the pack when he angled the horse outside but not clear of a tiring rival on the far turn, causing heels to clip and Keveh Nicholls to be thrown to the track (Nicholls resumed riding later that week).

Salles has a 2-for-39 riding record at the current Woodbine meet. He told the Sun that this season has been a “nightmare” for him.

“I just think my riding style doesn't match with the rules they have up here,” Salles added.

O’Brien Gives Update on Goodwood Team

Aidan O'Brien will send a strong Ballydoyle challenge to the Qatar Goodwood Festival next week, and has a trio of colts ready to step forward in the G1 Qatar Sussex S.-Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Battleground (War Front). Runner-up in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot, the MG1SP Lope Y Fernandez won the Listed Heritage S. at Leopardstown in April. GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Order Of Australia was last seen in action taking the G2 Minstrel S. at The Curragh on July 18 and Battleground, a Group 2 winner, exits the G1 Prix Jean Prat on July 11 with a ninth-place run.

O'Brien said of the Coolmore partners' runners, “Order Of Australia has come out of the race [on Sunday] well. He cantered today and yesterday and he's very well. It's very possible that he could go. Obviously when he only ran at the weekend, we'd like to get him back in full work for four or five days and do the right thing for the horse.

“We have the choice of running here or going to the Lennox S., but at the moment we're thinking of the Sussex. He worked this morning and we were very happy with him.”

He added of Battleground, “He ran a very big race in Ascot. He was a little bit disappointing the last day, but he was drawn out on a wing and he's a horse that likes to get cover.

“We've been very happy with him since and we think Goodwood will suit him–we think he'll leave that run behind him and come right back to his Ascot run and better. It's very possible that he could go to the Sussex as well.”

The G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup S. could also feature three from Rosegreen, with 2020 G1 Derby hero Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), 2020 G1 Irish Derby victor Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) and June 27 G2 Comer Group International Curragh Cup winner Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) all likely to start.

“We think coming back to two miles will help Santiago and Amhran Na Bhfiann the same,” said O'Brien. “There's a chance that Serpentine will run as well. We were thinking two of the three, we just haven't decided yet which two.”

O'Brien's G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas one-two Empress Josephine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire} and Joan Of Arc (Ire) (Galile {Ire}), who subsequently won the G1 Prix de Diane, both hold an entry in the G1 Qatar Nassau S.

“The two fillies we were training for it [the Nassau] are Joan Of Arc, who won the Diane, and Empress Josephine,” said O'Brien. “Joan Of Arc has been progressing lovely all season and we've been looking at this with her for a good while. Empress Josephine could step up to a mile and a quarter to run [in] it as well. That's not definite, but it's very possible.”

Jockey Vince Halliday Remains In The Intensive Care Unit After Delaware Spill

Irish native Vince Halliday remains in critical condition on Tuesday at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., following a spill at Delaware Park on July 15.

Halliday was riding the filly Tua in a $10,000 maiden claiming race, the last race on the day's card. According to Delaware Park steward Robert Colton, near the final turn of the six-furlong race, Halliday and Tua were running just back of two horses, Hot Tail and Normalizeddeviance. When Normalizeddeviance changed leads, her hindquarters drifted slightly into Tua's running lane. Tua then clipped her heels and fell, somersaulting before getting up and running riderless until the track maintenance crew caught her. Halliday fell to the track and then was hurdled by another horse, Commission Actress. Jockey Augusto Marin was unseated when Commission Actress jumped but came away from the incident with no significant injuries.

Halliday's wife Stephanie Pastore shared news of her husband's current condition as he remains in the Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday.

“Vince remains in the ICU at Christiana Hospital,” Pastore wrote. “His brain bleeds have stabilized, however he still has not gained the ability to use his arms. The injuries to Vince's neck and lungs have made it very difficult to breathe on his own. Doctors have had no choice [but] to intubate to keep his Oxygen levels up. He is unable to speak or swallow on his own.

“Attempts to remove the breathing tube have been unsuccessful. Additional MRIs have shown multiple fractures to vertebrae and an additional fracture in his sternum.”

Sarah Crane, executive director of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission, added: “His wife Stephanie has been at his side and is relentless in aiding his recovery and encouraging Vince to stay strong. Vince is very frustrated that he cannot move his arms, speak, or breathe on his own. Vince was able to nod at letters in the alphabet to communicate, anyone that know Vince will not be surprised to learn that he asked about the well-being of 'Tua' the filly that fell with him, Vince was happy to learn she will be okay.

“Vince and Stephanie are grateful for the support and the outpouring of love for Vince. Please continue to Pray for Vince and Stephanie during this difficult time.”
