Equine Assisted Therapy Major Launched At Emory & Henry College

Emory & Henry College will begin offering a new bachelor's of art degree in Equine Assisted Therapy, starting in Fall 2021.

The Equine Assisted Therapy major is an interdisciplinary major blending psychology and equine studies courses, designed to provide students with a thorough knowledge of human psychology and psychopathology and how horses may be used in order to improve the psychological functioning of a wide range of individuals.

“This interdisciplinary program blends the college's expertise in equine studies and psychology to create an opportunity for students who are interested in utilizing their knowledge and love of horses in order to offer therapeutic services to children and adults,” says Jessica Denniston, Clinical Assistant Professor of Equine Studies. “This major provides an excellent path for students interested in receiving graduate training in various mental health fields as well as allied fields such as occupational therapy.”

The program will be based on the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model of practice, so students will be prepared to become an EAGALA certified therapist. EAGALA is recognized as the standard-setting organization in this field.

Graduates will be prepared for careers such as equine specialist for a therapeutic center, mental health specialist, working in a residential therapy setting, managing a therapy program as well as graduate studies in programs such as Emory & Henry's master's of Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Proposals Related To Colic Research Sought; Funding Available

Morris Animal Foundation is now accepting proposals for research studies on equine colic, with a specific focus on the intestinal tract. Grant applications are due by Monday, September 27, 2021, 4:59 p.m. EST., and will be funded in the 2022 fiscal year.

Proposals should advance the knowledge and understanding of one or more of these areas for colic: risk factors, prevention or early detection, feeding and nutrition, and pathophysiology. The Foundation is not accepting new proposals or resubmissions on other topics under this request for proposals.

Morris Animal Foundation is one of the largest nonprofit organizations worldwide that funds health studies benefiting horses, cats, dogs, llamas, alpacas and wildlife. The Foundation currently is funding 150 studies encompassing a broad spectrum of species and diseases, with approximately $3.3 million in new research funds disbursed annually.

Each year, the Foundation opens four separate calls for its major funding areas – equine, feline, canine and wildlife. This year's equine topic is based on responses to recent surveys of both horse owners and veterinarians which indicated colic as the area most in need of further research.

To be considered for funding, applications are reviewed and rated based on scientific rigor and impact for veterinarians and horse owners by the Foundation's scientific advisory board, comprised of leaders in the international equine research community.

Grant types awarded by the Foundation include Established Investigator, First Award, Fellowship and Pilot Study.

RTCA to Host Seventh Annual Golf Tournament

The Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) will host their Seventh Annual Golf Tournament at Champions Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, KY, home of the PGA Barbasol Championship. All proceeds go to support RTCA National and racetrack Chaplaincies everywhere.

The tournament will begin Monday, Oct. 4, with lunch at 12 p.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Included in the registration fee are green fees, boxed lunch, a team photo, food after the round and golf gifts. The tournament will be followed by an award ceremony. A host of prizes will be given out for longest drive, closest-to-the-pin, door prizes and other special games. Among those are a chance to win a hole-in-one Grand prize of an all-expenses paid Hawaiian vacation.

Icebreaker Bingo

Most people enjoy the fun and entertainment parties offer. It does not matter whether it is a birthday party, Christmas party or a reunion, it is always fun. But, having a party can become a nightmare to the host. Not only does the host have to keep all the guests happy, he/she should also introduce everyone and make sure all the guests are comfortable in each others company.

What the host needs is something to break the ice and get the guests to mingle and talk to each other. The solution is an icebreaker game, such as icebreaker bingo. Not only are icebreaker bingo lots of fun, it can keep guests busy for hours and help the host to introduce all the guests to each other.

The goal of the icebreaker bingo game is to get guests to ask each other questions in order to fill their bingo cards. This way guests can speak to each other and get to know each other without feeling pressured or uncomfortable. They learn personal details of each other’s lives and will soon feel they have something in common.

Making icebreaker bingo cards is easy, but do require a bit of time. The same amount of cards as guests is needed, although it is always a good idea to prepare a few extra cards in case unexpected guests arrive at the party. An icebreaker bingo card usually consists out of 25 (5X5) or 36 (9×9) even-sized blocks. Inside every block the host can write short phrases like “played college football”, “has a pet reptile”, “has been to Hawaii”, “loves reading” and “has a tattoo”. Another option is to search for ready-made cards online. Most of these sites use a random card generator, which means that all the cards will be different.

The aim of the game is to have the guests ask each other the questions on their cards. As soon as they find someone with, for example, a tattoo, they write that person’s name on the appropriate block. The first guest to fill their bingo card is the winner of the game. Another good idea is to offer a prize to the winner of the icebreaker bingo game. The prize can be anything from a yearbook if it is a reunion to a special gift at a Christmas of birthday party.

The amount of icebreaker bingo games the guests play depends on the host and the amount of time set aside for the icebreaker bingo game. The intention is to let game last as long as possible, because guests are talking and interacting with each other.

Icebreaker bingo is a must-have for every party. It is fun, entertaining and an easy, comfortable way to meet other people.
