Horse Ingests Chicken Feed, Survives With Quick Intervention

Chickasaw Squaw, a 5-year-old Quarter Horse mare whose stable name is Chic, visited the Virginia Tech Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in July for an emergency appointment.

Owned by junior rider Eston and his dad, Todd Alexander, Chic and her stablemates raided the Alexanders' grain storage and consumed not only horse feed, but also chicken feed, which is toxic to horses and can prove fatal.

The following morning, Chic was visibly uncomfortable. Her primary care veterinarian, Dr. Justin Sobota of South Mountain Equine, was called to the farm, and he worked on Chic to relieve her discomfort. After a nasogastric tube was passed and water, electrolytes, and anti-inflammatory medication were administered, there was no visible improvement to Chic's comfort level, so she was referred to the Equine Medical Center for further diagnostics, treatment and care.

Upon arrival, Chic was dull and clearly uncomfortable. Thorough examination by the center's medicine team, led by resident Dr. Stephanie Hernandez, and on-site diagnostic testing confirmed that Chic was suffering from systemic inflammation and endotoxemia, secondary to grain overload.

Chic's temperature of 102.5 degrees landed her in the center's biosafety level 2 isolation building, which offers overnight supportive care in a temperature-controlled environment conducive to the recovery of critically ill horses. Aggressive medical management was started: intravenous fluids, anti-endotoxin therapy, electrolyte supplementation, vitamin supplementation, anti-inflammatories, ice boots to prevent laminitis and a stomach lavage.

By the following morning, Chic's temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate had normalized, and she was comfortable with no signs of colic or laminitis. Although she had not passed any manure overnight, she was much brighter and had a great appetite.

Chic was started on a gradual refeeding plan with small amounts of hay and she continued to maintain a great appetite.

After three days, the intravenous fluid therapy was discontinued and Chic was gradually weaned off anti-inflammatories. The following day, much to Eston's delight, the mare was able to go home for continued rest and recuperation under his care.

“We are so happy and impressed with the care that Chic received. Dr. Hernandez was so good about keeping us informed and up to date on Chic's progress,” Todd said. “It was obvious that Dr. Hernandez was truly concerned not only about her patient, but also our son Eston and how he was feeling.  We can't thank Dr. Hernandez and her staff enough.”

Minimum Ratings Reduced for PP Imports in HK

The Racing Committee of The Hong Kong Jockey Club (The Club) approved reductions to the minimum Hong Kong ratings for all categories of Private Purchase (PP) permits with immediate effect.

New Minimum Ratings for all PPs
The new Hong Kong minimum ratings have been reduced by five points. A Normal PP or a Normal Replacement has been reduced from 68 to 63 while the standard Special Replacement Permits were reduced from 85 to 80. The minimum rating for a 3-year-old, which has not raced more than five times, has been reduced from 80 to 75, and the same applies to an owner using a Special Replacement Permit for the first time.

“The Club conducted a holistic review of the overall structure of the horse population to address the parity between PPs and Private Purchase Griffins [PPGs] as well as market conditions,” said Andrew Harding, the Club's Executive Director. “It is important to note that the new minimum levels of initial racings will not reduce the required level of ability in the assessment of overseas horses to qualify for import to Hong Kong. We will not compromise on quality. These changes are intended solely to improve the value proposition for horse owners importing PPs and increase the competitiveness of these horses as they make the transition to Hong Kong.”

High Achievement Bonus
The Club will also introduce a two-tiered plan to the popular High Achievement Bonus at the start of the new season, which offers a premium to horses imported on a Hong Kong rating of 75 or higher. Owners of a PPG and Owners of a PP with an initial rating of 74 or less are eligible for a one-time High Achievement Bonus of $1 million if successful in a Class 2 race when rated 80 or higher before five years of age. Within the same time frame, an additional $500,000 will be awarded if the horse subsequently wins an unrestricted race in Class 1 or above when rated 100 or higher. International Sales Griffins (ISGs) are also eligible for this bonus scheme.

The owners of a PP with an initial rating of 75 or higher are eligible for a one-time High Achievement Bonus of $1.5 million if successful in a Class 2 race when rated 80 or higher before reaching 5 years of age. Within the same time frame, an additional $1.5 million will be awarded if the horse subsequently wins an unrestricted race in Class 1 or above when rated 100 or higher. This raises the potential Owner bonus for highly-rated PPs from $1.5 million to $3 million, in addition to the recently-announced increases in prize money.

Del Mar: Shedaresthedevil Faces Top Local Challengers In Sunday’s Hirsch

The Grade 1, $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes will have its 51st running Sunday at Del Mar and seven high class fillies and mares have signed up to give it a go. The winner will earn an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Distaff to be held at the track later this fall.

Three of the femmes have special credentials and will draw the most attention at the wickets and on the racetrack. The trio consists of Qatar Racing and Flurry Racing Stables' Shedaresthedevil, Tabor, Magnier and Smith's As Time Goes By, and Ciaglia Racing and Highland Yard's Venetian Harbor.

The mile and one-sixteenth main track headliner will go as the ninth of 10 races on the Sunday program, which has a first post of 2 p.m.

Shedaresthedevil has shipped in from the east coast to contest the Hirsch, which has been won by such top distaffers as Stellar Wind (twice), Beholder, Zenyatta (three times), Azeri (twice), and Paseana. The shipper races out of the red-hot barn of trainer Brad Cox and sports a record of seven wins in 14 starts and earnings of $1,867,318. The 4-year-old daughter of the More Than Ready sire Daredevil has won five graded stakes, including a pair of Grade 1s. She'll come with her regular rider, eastern-based Florent Geroux.

As Time Goes By is a bay filly by Triple Crown champion American Pharoah who'll be making the eighth start of her career. The Bob Baffert trainee was last out on May 22 in the Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita, a mile and one-sixteenth that she won by a nose. Hall of Famer Mike Smith is signed on to ride the multiple stakes winner of $380,600.

Venetian Harbor also comes into the Hirsch off a stakes victory, hers being the Grade 2 Monrovia at Santa Anita on June 5. It was her fourth overall victory and enhanced her bankroll to $633,400. The quick daughter of Munnings has primarily been sprinting and her speed could prove dangerous in the Hirsch. Trainer Richard Baltas has drafted Mario Gutierrez to handle the 4-year-old Sunday.

Here's the full field for the race in post position order with riders and morning line odds:

Benjamin and Sally Warren's Warren's Showtime (Juan Hernandez, 8-1); Michael Rosenmayer's Clockstrikestwelve (Kyle Frey, 30-1); As Time Goes By (8/5); Mathiesen Racing, Feghali or Mathis' Paige Anne (Flavien Prat, 15-1); 5th Street Stables, Saldana or Urbina's Cover Version (Abel Cedillo, 30-1); Venetian Harbor (2-1), and Shedaresthedevil (7/5).
