Caravel Using Friday’s Goldwood As Springboard To Ambitious Summer Schedule

Elizabeth Merryman isn't convinced she has seen the best from Caravel, a 4-year-old filly she bred, owns and trains.

But she's hoping Friday's inaugural $75,000 Goldwood Stakes at Monmouth Park is another step toward finding out where the ceiling is for a turf specialist she feels will be the best horse she has ever had.

“This race will tell me a lot,” said Merryman. “A month from now there are four filly and mare turf sprints within a five-day period. There's one at Colonial (the Andy Guest on July 26), one at Saratoga (the Grade 3 Caress on July 24), one at Woodbine (the Grade 2 Royal North on Aug. 1) and one at Pimlico. This will give me an indication (of where to go next).

“There's a really good filly in this race (Miss Auramet) who has done nothing wrong that she has not run against yet. So we'll see.”

The Goldwood, set for five furlongs on the grass, has attracted a field of eight and headlines a six-race twilight card. Miss Aurament, trained by Kathleen O'Connell, comes off an impressive win in the slop in the Politely Stakes on May 30 at Monmouth Park. That race was originally scheduled for the turf.

Caravel's credentials, though, stack up with any of the fillies or mares in the race. She is 5-for-7 lifetime with two thirds, with her only defeats coming on a yielding turf and a good turf.

The Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Mizzen Mast-ZeeZee ZoomZoom by Congrats was set to go in Tuesday's Power By Far Stakes at Parx until the race was taken off the turf.

“Her training hasn't been smooth to this race since we were supposed to go Tuesday,” said Merryman, whose 14-horse stable is based at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md. “We'll see how she handles the adversity, with everything not being quite right.”

Merryman was convinced there was something special about Caravel from the outset and chose not to rush her as a 2-year-old, allowing her to go through a series of growth spurts before hitting the racetrack.

Her anticipated debut hardly went as planned, however. She broke 10th and last in a five-furlong Maiden Special Weight turf dash at Penn National on June 20 last year. And then something remarkable happened. She rallied from last for most of the race to win going away by 1¼ lengths.

“Not only did she break last, she was steadily dropping back,” said Merryman. “I was watching the race thinking `My gosh, I really like this filly. How can she be this bad? How can I be so wrong?' And then it just clicked for her. It was amazing to see.

“The thing is, she has always been good from the gate. I think she was just caught off guard.”

Caravel went on to win four of her five starts at 3 and is coming off a victory in the The Very One Stakes at Pimlico on May 14 in her second start at 4.

“She has come back a little bigger and stronger,” said Merryman, who has been training since 2004. “She carries a bit more weight now and looks a little more robust.”

A winner of $212,872 from her seven career starts, Caravel drew post position 1 for the Goldwood Stakes.

“The post is not a big deal with her. She kind of dictates what she wants to do,” said Merryman. “You don't have to send her and you don't have to take her back. You just have to sit as chilly as possible and let her tell you where she wants to be.”

Ioya Bigtime Dies Of Colic In Uruguay At Age 14

Multiple Grade 3 winner Ioya Bigtime died Tuesday of colic at Haras La Concordia in Uruguay, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 14-year-old son of Dynaformer's death comes just before the start of the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. He has resided in Uruguay for his entire stud career, after being exported to the country following the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, where he sold privately to South American connections after finishing under his reserve in the ring.

The Illinois-born homebred for Team Block won six of 25 starts during his racing career and earnings of $540,149, highlighted by a win in the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes Stakes in his home state, as well as the G3 Kentucky Cup Turf Stakes at Kentucky Downs. Though his specialty was on the turf, he also showed ability over the former all-weather main track at Keeneland, finishing second in the G2 Fayette Stakes at Keeneland.

Ioya Bigtime has quickly developed a strong resume at stud in Uruguay, with just four crops to race. He was the country's leading freshman sire in 2018, but his second crop paid even greater dividends.

His showcase runner is Ajuste Fiscal, who was named Uruguay's Horse of the Year in both 2019 and 2020, racking up a trio of Group 1 victories in the process. He won two out of three legs of Uruguay's Triple Crown, the G1 Gran Premio Jockey Club and Grand Premio Polla de Potrillos, and he finished third in the G1 Gran Premio Nacional.

Earlier this year, Ajuste Fiscal ventured outside of South America for the first time to compete in the U.A.E., where his efforts included a third-place finish in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2.

Other runners of note sired by Ioya Bigtime include Uruguayan classic-placed Group 3 winner Negrone, and group stakes-placed runners El Curato and Russian Time.

Battaash Greenlighted For Goodwood

Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has exited his fourth-place finish in last week's G1 King's Stand S. in good form and is on course to attempt a fifth straight win in Goodwood's G2 King George S. on July 30. The 7-year-old gelding was making his first run since last summer when folding in the late stages after attending a hot pace in the King's Stand.

“He's come out of the race really well actually, he's been cantering away this week and we're really pleased with him,” said trainer Charlie Hills. “They went really fast and with it being first time out it just caught him out. It's a stiff five furlongs at Ascot, it has never really played to his strengths and he just got tired and a bit leg-weary in the last half furlong. He's also there to be shot out when it transpires like that. We'll go to Goodwood now, his races are pretty obvious.”

Dominus Moves To Ohio’s Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm For 2022

Dominus, a multiple Grade 2 winner and veteran sire, will relocate to Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm in Polk, Ohio for the 2022 breeding season.

The 13-year-old son of Smart Strike previously stood at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he entered stud in 2013. He stood the 2021 season for an advertised fee of $5,000.

Dominus has sired six crops of racing age, with 112 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $7.3 million.

His most notable runner to date has been Straight Fire, a fast-starting juvenile who finished second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and third in the G1 FrontRunner Stakes. Straight Fire currently stands at stud in California.

Other runners of note by Dominus include Grade 2-placed Dominant Soul and Parsimony, and Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Chanel's Legacy.

Dominus won four of 10 starts during his own racing career, for earnings of $444,717. He won the G2 Dwyer Stakes as a 3-year-old, then he came back the following season to win the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap.

Bred in Virginia by Edward P. Evans, Dominus is out of the Grade 2-placed stakes-winning Lord At War mare Cuando. He is a half-brother to the multiple graded stakes producer Ask Me When, who is herself the dam of Grade 3-placed stakes winners Aristocratic and Up the Ante.

His extended family includes Kentucky Oaks winner Sun and Snow, Grade 1 winner Honey Ryder, and Grade 3 winners Cuando Puede and Hit It Rich.
