Watering to Continue at Epsom

Epsom Downs will receive more water on Wednesday morning, the racecourse announced on Tuesday. Epsom Downs Clerk of the Course and Head of Racing Andrew Cooper issued a going update on Tuesday evening in advance of the June 4-5 Cazoo Derby Festival.

“We've maintained a going report here of Good, Good To Firm in places and we produced a Turftrax GoingStick reading of 7.1, which is actually what it was on Sunday morning,” said Cooper in a statement.

“It had increased to 7.4 yesterday morning and the watering that we've done has improved matters a touch and brought us back to a stage where we were two days ago–which is historically pretty much good ground. However there is definitely ground that's on the quicker side on bits of the course though, hence that going description.

“We've had another hot day and it looks a hotter day still tomorrow, with talks of 26 or 27 degrees in the South East. Epsom is often a degree or so lower than the maximum because we're quite elevated here and often have a bit of a breeze so it would often be hotter at Sandown than here in terms of actual temperature.

“The plan here and now is to embark on a watering programme again tomorrow but quite exactly how much we'll leave until the morning. We'll take stock of the forecasts but I'm sure we'll be doing something quite widespread because we know we'll lose 3mm of moisture of soil here on a day like today.

“I'd say that we are now where we want to be in terms of a broad aim for Friday–as opposed to anything any slower or anything any quicker. That's quite a good ground condition to go into a two-day meeting on, which means you can probably let nature take its course thereafter and be no worse than Good To Firm on Saturday.

“You'd have called us Soft on Monday of last week but by Friday you wouldn't have called it any slower than Good To Soft. All courses up and down the country are drying out at the moment but Epsom Downs being chalk-based is rather free draining and it can turn very quickly.”

Marquand booted home Galileo Chrome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) to win the 2020 G1 St Leger and he has also enjoyed international success in Australia with MG1SW Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) among others.

“We are delighted to announce the sponsorship of Classic-winning jockey Tom Marquand,” the REHC tweeted. “Tom will be providing exclusive content and interviews on the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club social channels.”

O’Brien’s Cazoo Derby Team Being Finalised

The G1 Cazoo Derby field is currently at 19, with as many as six Aidan O'Brien colts set to compete, including the ante-post favourite dual Group 3 winner Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G2 Beresford S. hero and G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. third High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was the Derby favourite over the winter. French Group 1 winner Van Gogh (American Pharoah), third in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas is possible, although he is also one of 20 left in the G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club. O'Brien also has two-time winners Sir Lamorak (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the Leopardstown winner The Mediterranean (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). However, a final call on which Ballydoyle horses will step forward in the Blue Riband will be made on Wednesday.

“It's not definite yet what we're sending,” said the master of Ballydoyle. “They've all done their last piece of work this morning and that is being analysed at the moment.

“When the figures come back from all those works, they'll be sent to the lads [owners] this evening. They'll be blooded and scoped in the morning and we'll have the results of that at lunchtime tomorrow or a little bit later. After that we'll see what the lads want to do.

“Obviously with Bolshoi Ballet, this has been his target all the way. High Definition the same, but he didn't have a clear passage obviously to York. Kyprios and Sir Lamorak both have other options, The Mediterranean is in at Leopardstown on Thursday and Van Gogh has an option of going to France [for the French Derby on Sunday]. Everything went well this morning and it's so far so good with them.”

“I think it's very competitive.,” O'Brien said of this year's Derby entries. “There's horses that have come from different trials over different trips and I think they all have to be respected.

“For me, there is no doubt the Derby is the most important race of all. The whole thoroughbred breed is measured by the Derby–because it's the most gruelling race and tough on horses.”

Keeneland to Celebrate Summer With Breakfast at the Track

Keeneland will host a number of activities at the iconic race track this summer, led by Breakfast at the Track, a new Keeneland Crafted event for the public to be held Saturday, June 19 and Saturday, July 10 from 8-10:30 a.m. ET.

An outdoor event, Breakfast at the Track will allow guests to experience the beauty of Thoroughbreds working over Keeneland's main track while enjoying an array of unique breakfast offerings created by Keeneland Hospitality, highlighted by Buckles Mini Carrot Cake Jacks and a Doughnut Hole Bar for children, as well as a Breakfast Burrito, Everything Bagel Sandwich and more. This family-friendly outing also features pony rides for kids, Paddock Demonstrations from equine partners and interactive equine-themed experiences for all ages.

Tickets for both the June and July Breakfast at the Track events are now on sale at tickets.Keeneland.com. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children and include admission and unlimited breakfast options. Tickets must be purchased in advance of the event.
