Belmont: Friday’s Card Features Double Pick 6 Carryover Of $260,473

Friday's Pick 6 will be boosted by a $260,473 carryover as the multi-race wager went unsolved for a second consecutive race day on Thursday at Belmont Park.

The $1 Pick 6, implemented at the current 48-day Belmont spring/summer meet, returned $1,479 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Thursday's sequence kicked off with Dancingwthdaffodls [No. 3, $36.80] prevailing as the longest shot on the board in Race 4 with Jose Lezcano up for trainer Eduardo Jones.

Eric Cancel guided Ninth Hour [No. 6, $9.20] to victory for trainer Chris Englehart in Race 5, a six-furlong claiming sprint. The Last Zip [No. 12, $12.20], with Luis Saez up for Mike Maker, secured the win in Race 6 in a Widener turf route.

Higher Truth [No. 9, $8.50] rallied to win a 10-furlong inner turf test in Race 7 under Jose Ortiz for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown.

In Race 8, Lezcano returned to the winner's circle aboard Jalen Journey [No. 5, $5.40], who left the gate as the mutuel favorite for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen in the seven-furlong optional-claiming sprint.

In the finale, Chulainn [No. 1, $19.60] secured the carryover as one of only five horses not covered in the loaded 11-horse field. Graham Motion trained the winner of the one-mile maiden claiming tilt over the Widener turf as Chulainn, with Manny Franco up, prevailed by a nose over Voliero [No. 2], who would have returned a $1 Pick 6 payout in excess of $130K to two tickets had he won.

Featuring a $1 bet minimum and 15 percent takeout, the Pick 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of six designated races on the card. A total of 75 percent of the full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher of all six races. A consolation payout of 25 percent of the net pool will be distributed to tickets selecting 5-of-6 winners.

In the event there are no tickets with six winners, there will be a carryover of 75 percent of the net pool into the next day of the meet with the remaining 25 percent of the net pool distributed as a consolation payout to tickets selecting the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card. On carryover days, the Pick 6 is offered with a 24 percent takeout.

The $1 Pick 6 replaced the Empire 6, a jackpot style wager featuring a $0.20 bet minimum first offered in August 2019 at Saratoga Race Course.

Friday's $1 Pick 6 kicks off in Race 4 at 2:31 p.m. Eastern and will include four turf races topped by a 10-furlong $92,000 inner turf allowance in Race 8 featuring Shamrocket, the 8-5 morning-line favorite exiting a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Man o' War. First post on Friday's nine-race card is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Gerard Melancon Scores 5,000th Victory At Evangeline Downs

Evangeline Downs fans were treated to a historic evening as jockey Gerard Melancon picked up a milestone victory in the final race on Thursday. Melancon's heavily favored runner, Reposado, led gate-to-wire, as he became the newest member of the 5000-victory club. With countless friends and family in attendance, Melancon was able to celebrate early, even flashing five fingers as he crossed the wire in a 5-3/4 length victory.

The win was made more special as the victor was trained by longtime friend Glen Delahoussaye. Running for owner Charles Carlton, the gelded son of Shackleford, Reposado is out of the Two Punch mare Bronze Abe.

Melancon began his professional riding career at Delta Downs in 1984. His first victory came with his third career mount with Dash and Cash on February 9, 1984. His first victory over the original Evangeline Downs oval was astride Cajun Lawman on April 7 the same year.

A multiple graded stakes winning jockey, he piloted Bonapaw to a Grade 1 winning score in the 2002 Vosburgh at Belmont Park. Melancon claimed two editions of the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot, first with Saber Cat in 2011 and then with Rise Up in 2013. His most recent graded-stakes score came in 2019 in the Lukas Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs with Mocito Rojo.

The native of Rayne, La. has ridden in over 31,900 races and his mounts have earned nearly $88 million in purse money. He recently passed Ramon Dominguez on the career wins list and the next rider to catch is Alex Solis with 5,035 wins.

He considers the 2004 Super Derby aboard Fantastic Cat his biggest win.

“It was a race I had dreamed about winning, and to do it twenty years into my career was pretty special,” he stated.

Several people have been integral in the storied career of Melancon.

“I have to thank my wife, Annette, for all of her support through the years. Manuel Robin was integral in giving me a chance to get started, and my agent Louis Coco has been a great partner for the past 25 years.”

Safe Removal Of Ticks Imperative To Horse Health

Ticks are prevalent in many areas of the country this year and keeping them off horses can seem like a never-ending battle. Though the tiny, hard-bodied arachnids are difficult to see, removing them is imperative to keeping horses free from the life-threatening diseases they carry.

Ticks are equipped with powerful jaws, so removing them from a horse can be difficult. Though it can be tempting, don't crush or twist the tick when trying to get it off the horse. Although many people try, smothering the tick with baby oil or petroleum jelly or touching the tick with a lit match isn't the best strategy. It can potentially cause more harm if the tick regurgitates blood into the horse, increasing the risk of disease transmission. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease, equine infectious anemia, piroplasmosis or equine granulocytic anaplasmosis.

Tick bites make horses itchy, but in large numbers they can cause more than just discomfort: they can cause enough blood loss to make the horse anemic. The best way to remove a tick is to use tweezers and grab the tick where it's attached to the skin. Using a steady force, pull the tick straight out and wash the area with an antiseptic solution.

Horse owners who are unsure what types of ticks thrive in their area should contact their local extension agent.

Louisiana native Gerard Melancon became the 37th jockey in North America to reach the milestone of 5,000 wins when his mount in the eighth race at Evangeline Downs Thursday night, Reposado (Shackleford), crossed the wire in front by 5 3/4 lengths. The first time he had visited the winner's circle as a rider at Evangeline Downs was 37 years ago. Melancon's first professional ride was at Delta Downs in 1984. He has since ridden in more than 31,900 races and earned nearly $88 million in purse money. He had recently passed retired Hall of Famer Ramon Dominguez on the all-time career wins list and has just 35 victories to go to match the win mark of retired Hall of Famer Alex Solis.
