Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association Endorses Amendment On Horse Slaughter

In yet another move to showcase its commitment to horse welfare, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) has announced its endorsement of an amendment that would ban the transport of American slaughter-bound horses across both state lines and over country borders. The amendment is scheduled to be on the U.S. House floor in coming weeks.

Led by U.S. Representatives Troy Carter, Brian Fitzpatrick, and John Katko, the amendment will be offered to the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation in America Act, H.R.3684. If passed into law, it would effectively ban horse slaughter in America. An estimated 30,000 horses are exported from America to be slaughtered each year, many of which are former racehorses or Thoroughbred breeding stock.

This endorsement is just the latest act in a series of pledges made by the PHBA towards equine welfare. The organization also supports the John Stringer Rainey Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, and has a strict anti-slaughter code of ethics.

The SAFE Act, named for the late South Carolina philanthropist and former director of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, is legislation that would permanently end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption in the United States and abroad. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Humane Society of the United States are among those supporting its passage.

At the time of the SAFE Act's introduction, PHBA executive secretary Brian Sanfratello said, “The SAFE Act is one of three items we are working on. The others are Pennsylvania-specific anti-slaughter legislation, similar to the SAFE Act, that would make it a misdemeanor for anyone who causes or transports a horse into the slaughter pipeline, as well as a PHBA code of ethics, with sanctions for anyone who is a member or registers horses with our organization and is found to be in violation of the Pennsylvania anti-slaughter measures.”

The PHBA's Anti-Slaughter Code of Ethics, which acknowledges it opposes slaughter in general but is focused on the safety and welfare of the Thoroughbred, states that it is a condition of PHBA membership that every applicant signs a pledge not to knowingly cause a Thoroughbred horse to be slaughtered. Violating the rule results in being sanctioned by the PHBA with a $1,000 fine for the first violation, a $5,000 fine for the second, and a fine as well as complete revocation of membership for five years after the third.

Tattersalls Online June 29th Sale Topped By Breeding Right To Ardad

The Tattersalls Online June 29th Sale was topped by the sale of a breeding right to Ardad for 52,000 guineas, the first breeding right to be offered online in Britain or Ireland. A total of 29 lots sold for 274,300 guineas in the fifth and largest sale yet to be held on the Tattersalls Online platform.

Ardad has made a sensational start to his career at stud and the breeding right to the exciting young son of Kodiac was purchased for 52,000 guineas by Ed Player of Whatton Manor Stud. Commenting on the purchase, Ed Player said:

“Ardad has made a remarkable start. Lots of winners, yes, but I am especially impressed by their quality. Six juvenile runners at Royal Ascot is great going, and Perfect Power looks like a colt with a big future. They've got such incredibly sound minds. I'm really looking forward to breeding to him in the years ahead.”

Standing at Overbury Stud, Ardad has produced 13 individual winners in his first crop of runners led by the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power and the Group 2 Coventry Stakes placed Vintage Clarets. This strong start coupled with the sale of the breeding right delighted Overbury Stud manager Simon Sweeting who commented:

“I'm delighted that the breeding right has been bought by as successful a commercial breeder as Whatton Manor Stud. It is a tremendous endorsement of what Ardad's first crop have achieved so far.”

The sale also featured spirited competition for a strong contingent of promising National Hunt prospects led by the 5-year-old Sir Jackschiaparel, an impressive winner of a point-to-point at Fairyhouse on his most recent start. The son of Schiaparelli was purchased by Richenda Ford Racing for 29,000 guineas from Ellmarie Holden's Coolmeen Stables.

Another first-time buyer to be impressed by her experience of the Tattersalls Online platform, Dorset-based trainer Richenda Ford commented:

“I found using Tattersalls Online very easy and straightforward, I liked the way Sir Jackschiaparel won his point to point, and I'm familiar with his consignors so confident that he is a horse with plenty of promise. He'll come back to the yard and have an easy few weeks before running under rules, we may start him off in a bumper in the next couple of months.”

Seaforth Mancy was another lot to attract plenty of attention, with Nick Alexander seeing off a number of bidders to secure the progressive gelding for 23,000 guineas. Offered by Fennell House, Ireland, the five-year-old was placed on his most recent start in a bumper and will join leading Scottish-based trainer Nick Alexander. The Kilronan Stables consigned Kicks and Ale also attracted a winning bid of 23,000 guineas from Richard Rowe and Aidan Kennedy. The 4-year-old son of Pour Moi was the winner of a point to point on his latest start and is set to head to Richard Rowe's base in West Sussex.

After the conclusion of the Tattersalls Online June 29th Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

The next sale to be held on the Tattersalls Online platform will be held on Aug. 17 with the closing date for entries on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Fort Erie Plans To Allow Limited Spectators Beginning July 12

The Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium announced today that a limited number of spectators will be allowed to return to the border oval beginning July 12. In response to the province's announcement that horse racing facilities can now reopen to spectators with a limited capacity, Fort Erie Race Track will gradually welcome back fans within the next few weeks.

“We are overjoyed to have spectators returning to the track,” said Drew Cady, the general manager of FELRC. “Of course, we remain extremely cautious about reopening our doors to spectators as the safety of all our horse people and staff remains the top priority.”

The border oval's racing season began on June 15 and the track will continue to offer live racing Monday and Tuesday afternoons until the end of October.

On July 5, the track will allow AGCO licensees to register online to attend upcoming racing days.

“Starting next week, we will allow people holding an AGCO license to have access to the track,” said Cady. “The horse owners – all the people who've continually footed the bill for their horses over the last several months can finally be trackside to see their horses run.”

On Monday, July 12 Fort Erie Race Track will be open to a limited number of spectators. Each spectator must reserve a spot online through forterieracing.com. Spectators will not be permitted on the property if they have not pre-registered online. Please note, everyone's temperature will be taken as part of the screening process to gain entry to the track upon arrival at the track. While visiting the track, wearing a mask is mandatory and must be worn at all times.

Covid-19 protocols remain in effect and will be monitored. Indoor areas of the track such as the Racebook and indoor dining areas remain closed. Spectators onsite will have access to washrooms and two outdoor BBQ food services; trackside at the Tikki Bar and as well as the Paddock Shack across from the paddock area.

Ardad Breeding Right Tops Tattersalls

A breeding right in Overbury Stud's Ardad (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (lot 83) brought 52,000gns from Ed Player of Whatton Manor Stud to top the Tattersalls Online June 29th Sale on Tuesday.

The bay, who stood for £4,000 this term, already has 13 winners this season to lead the European first-crop sires by that metric. He also sired the G2 Norfolk S. hero Perfect Power (Ire) at Royal Ascot, and another colt, Vintage Clarets (GB), ran third at that meeting in the G2 Coventry S.

“Ardad has made a remarkable start,” said Player. “Lots of winners, yes, but I am especially impressed by their quality. I'm really looking forward to breeding to him in the years ahead.”

The breeding right in Ardad is the first breeding right to be offered in an online sale in Britain or Ireland. In 2021, the stallion enjoyed a busy breeding season, covering 152 mares.

Added Overbury Stud Manager Simon Sweeting, “I'm delighted that the breeding right has been bought by as successful a commercial breeder as Whatton Manor Stud. It is a tremendous endorsement of what Ardad's first crop have achieved so far.”

Schiaparelli (Ger) gelding Sir Jackschiaparel (Ire) (lot 25) brought the second highest price at 29,000gns. Richenda Ford Racing snapped up the winning point-to-pointer from the consignment of E. Holden's Coolmean Stables.

The gross for the 29 lots sold (42%) was 274,300gns. The average was 9,459gns and the median was 4,200gns.
