HISA Tabs Hank Zeitlin as Interim Executive Director

Edited Press Release

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (“the Authority”) board of directors announced that Henry “Hank” A. Zeitlin will serve as Interim Executive Director of the Authority through the remainder of 2021. The board reached this decision after interviewing multiple qualified candidates nominated by racing constituencies and interested parties. The Authority is also in the process of selecting an executive search firm to assist in undertaking a nationwide search for a permanent Executive Director to begin serving next year. Under Zeitlin's leadership, the Authority's anti-doping and medication control and racetrack safety standing committees will begin their work to establish uniform anti-doping, medication control, operational and accountability measures governing all 38 racing jurisdictions in the U.S. These proposed measures will be subject to the oversight and approval of the Federal Trade Commission.

“Hank Zeitlin's extensive background across multiple facets of the racing industry makes him an excellent addition to the Authority as we work toward a better and safer sport for all,” said Board Chair Charles Scheeler. “As we seek to engage both industry and external stakeholders for their insights and expertise on the various components of the racetrack safety and anti-doping and medication control programs, it is clear that Hank is the right fit for the role given his in-depth knowledge of the subject matter.”

Zeitlin currently serves as the executive vice president and a member of the board of directors at Thoroughbred Racing Associations, Inc., the trade association for racetracks in North America. He also serves as president and member of the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau, Inc., which provides integrity services for Thoroughbred racing and wagering. Previously, Zeitlin worked at Equibase for 18 years as Executive Vice President, then President. More recently, Zeitlin served as the chief facilitator for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's (NTRA) comprehensive update to and expansion of the NTRA Safety & Integrity Alliance's Code of Standards. His critical role in this effort involved leading three teams of experts in establishing best practices in anti-doping and medication control, racing safety and racetrack surface maintenance.

“I'm looking forward to being a part of this exceedingly important effort to develop industry-wide safety and integrity reforms at a time when those inside and outside the industry are looking for greater transparency, increased accountability and stronger enforcement mechanisms,” said Zeitlin. “We have a lot of work to do ahead of the July 2022 program effective date, but thanks to the excellent efforts of the nominating committee and the strong baseline standards laid out in HISA, we are hitting the ground running.”

“On behalf of the Authority, I'd like to thank Hank Zeitlin for agreeing to take on this role,” said vice chair of the board of directors and former Governor of Kentucky Steve Beshear. “An effort of this magnitude requires experienced and dedicated leadership at every level, starting at the top.”

Breakthrough For Profitable As Quick Suzy Wins the Queen Mary

As much as ever, Wednesday's G2 Queen Mary S. was all about speed from pillar-to-post and there was none slicker than Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' aptly-named Quick Suzy (Ire) who provided her first-season sire Profitable (Ire) with a landmark first black-type winner. Runner-up in the six-furlong G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. at Naas last time May 16, the Gavin Cromwell-trained bay who was another drawn closest to the stand's rail was tanking along early alongside the 9-4 favourite Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}) with Artos (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in front on the far side. Inside the final two furlongs, it was between the stand's-rail runners and the 8-1 shot Quick Suzy gradually asserted from the furlong pole under Gary Carroll to subdue Twilight Gleaming by 1 1/4 lengths. The 50-1 closer Cheerupsleepyjean (Fr) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was the eye-catcher from rear, finishing 1 3/4 lengths away in third and a neck in front of the trail-blazing Artos. “Quick Suzy–she's that and everything else,” the winning rider said. “It was very straightforward. I thought the American horse would go a real good gallop and I'd be chasing, but I was actually close to her and every step of the way I was waiting and waiting. Inside the two, she got maybe half a length on me but I chased her down and outbattled her to the line. She went quick last time over six on slow ground, as she has so much natural speed, but burnt off in the last 100 yards and ran out of petrol. She is a very good filly and really got to the line well today.”

Runner-up on debut to the impressive Elliptic (Ire) (Caravaggio) over five furlongs at Tipperary on debut Apr. 20, Quick Suzy bounced out of that effort to record a 5 1/2-length success over an extra furlong at The Curragh May 3 before being worn down late by Hermana Estrella (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in the Fillies Sprint. Gavin Cromwell, who is best known as a jumps trainer of note having saddled the winners of the Champion Hurdle, Stayers' Hurdle and Spa Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, was starstruck. “It's unbelievable, fantastic–it's such an occasion,” he said. “I was very confident she'd run a big race, but didn't know where she laid with the English and American horses.”

Quick Suzy's dam Snooze (Ire) (Marju {Ire}), who also has a yearling full-brother to the winner, is a half to Aria Di Festa (Ire) (Orpen) who was second in the G3 Premio Regina Elena and third in the G2 Prix de Sandringham before producing the G3 Premio Primi Passi winner and G2 Gran Criterium runner-up Aria Importante (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}). The winner shares her multiple listed-placed second dam Alarme Belle (GB) (Warning {GB}) with the listed winner and G2 Prix de Sandringham runner-up Mixed Intention (Ire) (Elusive City), who is herself the dam of this month's G1 Prix du Jockey Club third Millebosc (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). This is also the family of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix d'Ispahan heroine Danseuse du Soir (Ire) (Thatching {Ire}), who accounts for the G1 Gran Criterium winner Scintillo (GB) (Fantastic Light).

California Chrome Co-Owner Passes Away

Denise Martin, the co-owner of California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), passed away June 14 at the age of 61. Martin and partners found the heights of success with the two-time Horse of the Year. The popular seven-time Grade I winner, whose victories included the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Dubai World Cup, currently stands in Japan.

Martin was the wife of Perry Martin, who also co-bred California Chrome. The couple split from their partners in the horse and founded Martin Racing in 2016, the same year California Chrome won his second Horse of the Year title. They have remained active in the horse business and recently won the GIII Steve Sexton Mile S. with homebred Mo Mosa (Uncle Mo).

“Denise greatly enjoyed interacting with racing fans, whether she communicated with them in person or through California Chrome's official social media channels,” said Perry Martin. “She also was solely responsible for all of Martin Racing's charitable giving endeavors.”

Martin was a chemist. She served as CEO of Martin Testing Labs in Sacramento from 2000 to 2020. She previously worked for the United States Air Force as a civilian employee at McClellan Air Force Base. The Martins were living in Wyoming at the time of her death.

Survived by her husband of 35 years, Martin also leaves behind her daughter, Kelly; her son, Perry, Jr.; and her brothers Andrew and Richard Brudniak.

Bravo Takes Show On Road, Wins Jockey Of The Week With Two Stakes Successes

Joe Bravo made the most of his travels last week. With mounts at Delaware Park in Delaware, Belmont Park in New York and Pimlico race course in Maryland, he won two stakes races to earn Jockey of the Week for June 7 through June 13.  The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

On Wednesday, Bravo journeyed to Delaware Park for the Obeah Stakes reuniting with the 4-year-old Dream Marie trained by Matthew Williams. Taken back early in the field of seven fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up, Bravo eased Dream Marie outside and advanced five wide at the half mile marker kicking clear in the final sixteenth to win by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:44.40 over a sloppy track, returning $19.40.

“She really likes this course,” said Bravo. “The last time she was on this course she was a very game second a heart-beat from winning. Today, as I was expecting, when she turned for home, she really kicked off nicely.”

After riding at Belmont Park Thursday and Saturday, Bravo travelled to Pimlico  on Sunday for the call on Pixelate in the Prince George's County for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles for trainer Michael Stidham.  In a field of 11, Bravo rated Pixelate in fifth along the rail outside Alwaysmining.  Entering the stretch, Pixelate drove past a tiring Alwaysmining and Logical Myth to win by a length in 1:53.56.

“He was really strong on the first turn,” Bravo said. When we got down the backside he started breathing underneath me and I knew he was comfortable. Turning for home I had to get him outside. Stidham did all the hard work and got him really ready. I want to say thanks to Godolphin.” When asked if he was told anything before riding Pixelate for the first time, Bravo replied, “Don't get beat jock.”

Bravo will be heading west to ride at Santa Anita closing weekend and intends to ride at Del Mar when that meet starts July 16.

Weekly statistics for Bravo were 6-3-1-0 and total purse earnings of $179,880.

For Jockey of the Week, Bravo out polled Stewart Elliott with two stakes wins at Lone Star, Kyle Frey who tied with Charle Oliveros for number of wins for the week with nine, and Jose Ortiz who one a stakes race and was leading jockey by total purse earnings.
