Lady Glamour Sells For $115,000 To Lead Keeneland June Digital Sale

Grade 2 stakes-placed Lady Glamour, in foal to Not This Time, sold for $115,000 to Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Anzac Farm, to top Keeneland's June Digital Sale, held today as part of Keeneland's Digital Sales Ring platform.

Lady Glamour is a 4-year-old mare by Discreet Cat out of Repeta, by Broken Vow. She is a half-sister to the 3-year-old colt Mucho Del Oro, a winner of three consecutive races at Santa Anita since April.

Dan Kjorsvik paid $35,000 for King Jack, a winner in three of his four career starts, including the Grade 2 Gallant Bob. By Jimmy Creed out of the Tapit mare Light Shine, King Jack is from the family of graded stakes winners Tar Heel Mom and Scrappy T. He was offered as a stallion prospect.

Both horses were consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

PA Raids That Yielded ‘Significant Contraband’ Now Termed as ‘Nothing of Substance’

One month after initially stating at a Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission (PHRC) meeting that May backstretch raids at Parx yielded a “significant amount of contraband” and “items that have no business on the backside,” Tom Chuckas, the director of Thoroughbred horse racing for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, gave a Tuesday update that now describes the yield from those searches in markedly less sensationalistic terms.

“In the last months, enforcement action was taken both at Penn National and at Parx,” Chuckas told commissioners at the June 29 PHRC meeting during his monthly briefing. “That enforcement action consisted of…vehicle searches, barn searches, vet trailer searches. In addition, we did out-of-competition testing both at Penn National and at Parx, and the preliminary results from these investigative enforcement actions is very, very minor infractions. Nothing of substance.”

Yet according to a June 2 ruling posted on the PHRC website, the May 21 raid did allegedly turn up “21 loaded hypodermic needles and hypodermic syringes” in the locked tack room of Parx trainer Richard Vega. TDN first reported that development on June 2.

Vega is currently appealing a summary suspension issued for that infraction by Parx stewards. He was denied a request for a stay that would have allowed him to keep training until his hearing date, and has not started a horse since May 19.

Chuckas–who gave his entire monthly Thoroughbred investigatory report in just 50 seconds–said nothing about Vega's aspect of the case. But he did add that the commission's enforcement branch will have a more active racetrack presence now that pandemic protocols have eased.

“We will continue to conduct enforcement actions moving forward now that COVID's over and most of our staff's been vaccinated,” Chuckas said.

Sheikh Hamdan’s Daughter To Carry On At Shadwell

Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum, daughter of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, will continue her father's legacy at Shadwell Estate, with Angus Gold, Shadwell's longtime racing manager, telling Racing Post that Sheikha Hissa will take over as head of the powerful racing and breeding operation. The news comes on the heels of Monday's announcement that Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster would step down.

“We've been communicating with Sheikha Hissa over the past couple of months since Sheikh Hamdan sadly died and I'm currently on my way back from a trip out to Dubai to meet her to discuss things in person,” Gold told Racing Post. “She confirmed to me that she and her family are very keen to honour Sheikh Hamdan's legacy and keep the whole thing going, which is fantastic. It's wonderful for his memory that she has the passion and her brothers are going to support her taking it forward and we'll do our best to do the same.”

Little is known about what the scale of Shadwell will be going forward, including whether Sheikha Hissa will combine the handful of runners she currently has in her own name under its banner, but Gold expressed that Sheikha Hissa shares her father's passion for the animal.

“Sheikh Hamdan used to involve Sheikha Hissa quite a bit,” he said. “She knows horses, loves horses and has horses of her own in Dubai. She enjoys the racing and has very much taken over his mantle since he died. Sheikh Hamdan had six children, of whom Sheikha Hissa is going to be the spokesperson on the horse front.”
