Courses Charted For Classic Runners-Up Mandaloun, Midnight Bourbon

Neither Mandaloun, second behind Medina Spirit in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, nor G1 Preakness runner-up Midnight Bourbon are bound for Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., on June 5 for the Belmont Stakes or undercard races.

Daily Racing Form reports that Juddmonte Farms' Mandaloun will be pointed by trainer Brad Cox toward the June 13 TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park, a prep for the G1, $1-million Haskell Invitational at the Oceanport, N.J., track on July 17. Winner of the G2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, the Into Mischief colt could wind up as the official Kentucky Derby winner if a split sample confirms the presence of a corticosteroid and stewards disqualify Medina Spirit from the victory.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Winchell Thoroughbreds' Midnight Bourbon, a son of Tiznow, finished sixth after a rough start in the Kentucky Derby and then second in the Preakness. Winchell Thoroughbreds racing and bloodstock advisor David Fiske said Midnight Bourbon could also wind up in the Haskell or in the G2, $600,000 Jim Dandy on July 30 at Saratoga.

Midnight Bourbon defeated Mandaloun winning the G3 Lecomte, then finished third behind that colt in the Risen Star.

“He came out of the Preakness great, but he may have put the groundskeepers out of a job he was eating so much grass,” Fiske told the New York Racing Association media office. “He shipped back to Churchill and has been jogging great. There aren't any big target races after the Belmont prior to the Jim Dandy or Haskell, so we'll focus on those races for now.”

Speightstown Firster Overcomes Wide Trip at Churchill

6th-Churchill Downs, $100,000, Msw, 5-23, 3yo/up, f/m, 5 1/2fT, 1:04.51, fm, neck.
TOWN AVENGER (f, 3, Speightstown–Unavenged, by Empire Maker) was crunched into 7-2 at post time from a morning line of 12-1 and was up in the shadow of the post for a good-looking victory at first asking. Settled behind midfield, but trapped out wide after departing the 10 hole, the $380,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase looped rivals four deep on the turn and carried a full head of steam into the lane despite the significant ground loss. The dark bay began to zero in on pacesetting Dynamite Gift (Justin Phillip) entering the final furlong and needed every inch of that final 220 yards before scraping in best. A $50,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $110,000 Keeneland April breezer, Town Avenger's dam won five of her 16 career starts on the competitive Japan Racing Association circuit, graduating over 2000 meters in soft turf at first asking before adding four wins on the dirt at distances from a mile to 2100 meters while earning better than $861,000. Repatriated and bred to Distorted Humor in early 2015, Unavenged–a half-sister to GSW Naughty New Yorker (Quiet American) and SW & MGSP Pupil (Unbridled)–was led out unsold on a bid of $400,000 at that year's Keeneland November sale. Town Avenger is kin to the 2-year-old colt Into Mission (Into Mission) and Unavenged was most recently served by Bolt d'Oro. Sales history: $380,000 Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,488. Tokyo Gold Skips to Italian Derby Win

Tokyo Gold (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) rolled to a daylight win in the G2 Premio 138th Derby Italiano Universita' Campus Bio-Medico di Roma at Capannelle on Sunday. The 5-2 crowd's pick gave the Demuro brothers an international Classic double, with Cristian Demuro in the irons in Rome. His brother Mirco had claimed the G1 Yushun Himba aboard Uberleben (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn}) at Tokyo earlier in the day.

Caught out in the middle of the course from the bell, he rated in midpack through the early stages. Still one of the widest approaching the final turn, he cruised up the centre of the course at the 600-metre marker, seized command shortly thereafter and cantered across the line four lengths to the good of Juan de Montalban (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Alastor (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) was another 1 1/2 lengths behind.

A winner at second asking at Saint-Malo last July, Tokyo Gold captured the Listed Prix Haras de Bouquetot in his next start at Craon on Sept. 5. Off the board in the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon a month later, the colt was a distant second in the Listed Prix Maurice Caillault when making his seasonal bow at Chantilly on Mar. 9. He stalked and briefly led in the G3 Prix Noailles, but faded to fourth at ParisLongchamp on Apr. 11.

Pedigree Notes
Tokyo Gold is the 14th group winner from 33 black-type winners for his sire, who stands at Haras de Colleville in France. Like his sire, and damsire, Dalakhani, all three are grey. The latter has 35 black-type winners as a broodmare sire, with the Teruya Yoshida homebred his 18th group winner.

A full-brother to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud third Notte Bianca (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), Tokyo Gold is out of Italian listed winner Biancarosa. Bred by Azienda Agricola La Vigna SRL, she was raced by Yoshida to win the Listed Premio Republiche Marinare at Capannelle as a 2-year-old. Mated exclusively with Kendargent once retired to the paddocks, the bay's latest produce is a yearling filly by that sire.

Velazquez To Ride Preakness Winner Rombauer In Belmont Stakes

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will ride John and Diane Fradkin's Grade 1 Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer in the G1 Belmont Stakes on June 5, replacing Flavien Prat, who rode the Twirling Candy colt to victory in the Triple Crown's middle leg but committed to ride G1 Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Hot Rod Charlie in the 1 1/2-mile Test of the Champion at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. The news was first reported by Daily Racing Form.

Velazquez rode Medina Spirit to a first-place finish in the Kentucky Derby and finished third aboard the Protonico colt in the Preakness, but Medina Spirit will not run in the Belmont. Following Medina Spirit's defeat in the Preakness and more than a week after the colt's trainer, Bob Baffert, revealed that he was notified of a positive drug test from the Derby, New York Racing Association officials said they would not accept any entries from Baffert or allow his horses to stable at NYRA tracks indefinitely. A stewards' hearing can not be held in Kentucky until results of a split sample test is received by officials there.

Velazquez was also the regular rider of G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Malathaat, who was briefly under consideration for a try against colts in the Belmont. However, her connections announced last week she would not contest the Triple Crown's final leg.

If Rombauer contests the Belmont, this will be the 19th consecutive year Velazquez has a mount in the race. He's won twice – with the filly Rags to Riches in 2007 and 2012 with Union Rags – from 24 Belmont Stakes starts dating back to 1995.
