Delaware: Leading Jockey Carol Cedeno Chasing Record Seventh Title

Three-time defending leading rider Carol Cedeno will be taking a run at history when the 84th live racing season at Delaware Park begins on May 26. The Delaware resident will be going for a record seventh leading jockey title at the Stanton-oval.

Since 2014, the native of Puerto Rico has been the leading jockey every season with the exception of 2017. She is currently tied with another Delaware Park legend Michael McCarthy who won six titles from 1996 through 2000 and 2002.

“I live only about a half-hour from the track and I raise my family in Delaware, so Delaware Park is home to me,” said Carol Cedeno, who is the mother of two children. “I work hard every day to make sure I can be my best for the season at Delaware Park and I take a lot of pride in being the leading rider. Every year it has been hard to be the leading rider and this may be the toughest year because I hear there are a good number of talented jockeys coming, so that just means I will be working a little harder.”

Cedeno has rewritten the Delaware Park history book on a number of other occasions.

She notched seven victories on a single card on July 11, 2018, breaking a record that had stood for more than six decades and was held by six riders. The jockeys who won six races on a single Delaware Park card were Joseph Rocco, Jr., in 2011; Michael McCarthy, who accomplished the feat twice—once in 1997 and again in 1998; Jimmy Edwards, in 1984; Greg McCarron, in 1974; George Cusimano, in 1968; and Eldon Nelson in 1958.

“To be mentioned with those kind of riders makes me extremely happy,” said Cedeno, who notched her 1,000th career victory at Laurel Park on Jan. 2. “Those are some of the best riders in racing, and to be in a group like that is special. I know to keep having success I need to keep working hard. But I love what I do and I love getting up in the morning to go to work at Delaware Park, so I am hoping I can do more.”

Cedeno has nearly 450 career victories at Delaware Park.

A Different Point Of View: Mask Recreates Equine Vision

It's easy to get frustrated when a horse spooks at something he's seen literally hundreds of times, but it's important to remember that equine vision is drastically different from human sight.

As humans, it's often hard to see things from a perspective other than our own – including the optics of other species. A new tool created by Alan Hook, who works in the School of Communication and Media at Ulster University in Ireland, is designed to raise consciousness about communication between humans and horses. Hook hopes the device will promote awareness, empathy and non-violence for animals that process the world differently than humans.

Hook purchased a mask from Etsy and added two 180-degree, high-definition cameras placed where a horse's eyes sit on its skull. These cameras allow for a nearly 360-degree field of vision (horses cannot see directly behind them) and remove red from the images being displayed, mimicking a horse's dichromatic vision.

The mask wearer is often disconcerted by the wide range of vision when they first put on the mask. Hook notes that if the wearer crosses his eyes, he can see forward — sort of.

There are no images available of what a person sees through the headset. Hook says this is intentional to encourage people to try on the headset and experience how a horse sees. A wireless version of the headset should be available in July.

Hook is hopeful that this mask will assist designers in creating goods that are better designed for the species they are working with.

Richest Juvenile Race in Europe Unveiled Exclusively For Goffs Orby Grads

The Goffs Million, a €1-million 2-year-old race open exclusively to Goffs Orby yearling graduates, was announced by Goffs on Tuesday.

The seven-furlong contest is the richest 2-year-old race in Europe and will be held at The Curragh on Sept. 24, 2022 in advance of the Goffs Orby Sale. Open to 2-year-old colts and fillies that were catalogued in the 2021 Goffs Orby Sale on Sept. 28-29, it carries a prize fund guaranteed by Goffs and will pay out to 10th place. In addition, if the 2022 Goffs Million winner subsequently wins a Group 1 race at three in Ireland, the UK, France, USA or Australia, the winning owner will receive a €100,000 bonus from Goffs.

Announcing the new initiative, Goffs Group Chief Executive, Henry Beeby said, “Only Goffs Orby Sale gives the opportunity to win Europe's richest 2-year-old race next year and we are excited to be offering this unique chance to buyers. As was shown at the weekend by the likes of Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the English 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas, Orby yearlings perform at the highest level on the global stage and this race will act as the perfect stepping stone for the best.

“Similar concepts have proved defining in the past and we are unashamedly reconfiguring the Million initiative for today's marketplace and will offer a select two-day Orby Sale at Kildare Paddocks this autumn. As one noted breeder told me when I discussed the idea with him, this means 'everyone' will come to Goffs to make sure they have a chance of winning such a big prize especially as prize money will extend to 10th place.

“We recognise that the Orby Sale in particular, and Irish sales in general, need a lift after the challenges created by the global pandemic but the end is in sight with the vaccination programme and we look forward to welcoming a global audience back to Kildare Paddocks, and continuing the momentum of the sale that was very evident up to 2019 when Orby was consistently returning six-figure averages and seven- figure top prices year on year.”

“The Curragh is delighted to be a part of this ambitious and innovative initiative by Goffs to stage an exciting new race that will give a major boost to attracting new owners to the sport, together with providing the platform to attract a significant audience to the racecourse and also delivering major global media coverage for what will be a major highlight of our Autumn Festival next year,” added Pat Keogh, Chief Executive at The Curragh. “We appreciate the continued support of The Curragh by Goffs, which also includes their long standing sponsorship of the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S.”
