Galileo’s Bolshoi Ballet Devastating In The Derby Trial

What had looked a match-up between Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Coolcullen's returning G1 Futurity Trophy hero Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in Sunday's G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown proved anything but as the former produced a devastating performance which is up with the best of his stable's previous 13 winners. Leading the main group as Ryan Moore kept it simple, the even-money favourite who had taken the G3 Ballysax S. over this 10-furlong trip here Apr. 11 was sent past the Bolger pacemaker Wexford Soil (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) approaching three out and stretched out impressively to record a six-length verdict over stablemate Lough Derg (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), with Fernando Vichi (Ire) (Australia {GB}) half a length back in third and a neck in front of Mac Swiney. The winner was slashed to 2-1 for the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby.

Baffert Reveals Betamethasone Positive for Derby Winner Medina Spirit

Bob Baffert told the media Sunday morning at Churchill Downs that his stable was informed by the Kentucky Racing Commission that GI Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit (Protonico) has tested positive for the medication betamethasone. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid.

During a 10-minute news conference (click for video), Baffert repeatedly proclaimed his innocence.

“All I can tell you is that betamethasone is an allowed therapeutic medication, but we did not give it to this horse,” Baffert said. “In fact, Medina Spirit has never been treated with Betamethasone. I cannot believe that I am here before you guys. Yesterday, I got the biggest gut punch in racing for something I did not do.”

Baffert said Medina Spirit was found to have 21 picograms of the drug in his system.

Baffert said that Kentucky racing officials contacted his assistant, Jimmy Barnes, on Saturday to give him the news, which he then relayed to Baffert.

For the sport's most prominent trainer, Sunday's news was the latest in a series of drug positives related to the Baffert stable. In each case, the Hall of Fame trainer has denied any wrongdoing.

Galileo’s Joan Of Arc Too Strong In the Guineas Trial

Making all in Sunday's G3 Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial over a mile at Leopardstown, Ballydoyle's Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was in the process becoming a sixth pattern-race winner from seven foals for Coolmore's remarkable You'resothrilling (Storm Cat). Last seen finishing sixth in the seven-furlong G3 Ballylinch Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at this track Apr. 11, the full-sister to Gleneagles (Ire) set an honest tempo under Ryan Moore and stayed on strongly to deny Flirting Bridge (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths on a day when racing prominently seemed to offer an advantage. The 11-4 favourite also maintains her dam's 100% record of producing group performers, with the year-older Vatican City (Ire) the only one not to score in that company although he was second in the 2020 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas.
