Yorkshire Cup The Friday Feature

York wraps up its three-day Dante meeting on Friday, with the G2 Matchbook Yorkshire Cup the dominant prize as the older stayers have their moment. Mark Johnston has made no secret of his passion for this category and 2021 promises to be his best year for some time with a trio of star names in the division hailing from Kingsley House Stables. While perhaps the chief member Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) is not on the Knavesmire, the other two are and his half-brother Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) has a definite edge over the stalwart Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Showing speed as well as stamina to take Newmarket's G2 Jockey Club S. over a mile and a half at the start of the month, Paul Dean's Sir Ron Priestley is back at the 14-furlong trip over which he suffered his last defeat when second in the G1 St Leger. Nayef Road, who was a head behind his stablemate when third in that Doncaster Classic, comes here on the back of a third reversal at the hands of the clear division leader Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) when also in that position in Ascot's G3 Sagaro S. Apr. 28.

Johnston's biggest problem this term is keeping the threesome apart. “We are very strong in the staying department and we did think that Sir Ron Priestley, Nayef Road and Subjectivist might all meet in the [G1] Gold Cup, but that's now looking very unlikely, because Sir Ron Priestley probably won't go that far,” he revealed. “It's great to see him demonstrating so much speed and his next runs after the Yorkshire Cup are quite likely to be at a mile and a half, with the [G2] Hardwicke S. a probable next target. It's been very satisfying getting him back in such good form after missing last year–he's given the impression he's in the form of his life and he's certainly rated higher than ever.

“Nayef Road is in good enough form too and ran really well in the Sagaro S. at Ascot and it's just a case of finding the best spots for all three horses.”

Ballydoyle's Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) offers the sternest threat to the Johnston pair, even if his return effort when fourth in Navan's G3 Vintage Crop S. Apr. 25 left some doubt as to whether he can make a serious mark in these type of races in 2021. Having also contested a St Leger, the G1 Irish Derby winner was on the premises in a strong renewal when fourth at Doncaster in September having also been third in the G1 Goodwood Cup attempting in vain to upset Stradivarius on favourable weight-for-age terms in July. “Hopefully he'll have come forward from his first run at Navan. He was keen enough there, with it being his first run and we know the trip is no problem,” Aidan O'Brien said.

Also on the card is a fascinating edition of the Listed Oaks Farm Stables Fillies' S., with the near-mile contest registered as the Michael Seely Memorial attracting two 'TDN Rising Stars' in Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). The former went through her Newbury maiden in the style of a class act, with the highly-regarded Derab (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and the subsequent winner Fantastic Fox (GB) (Frankel {GB}) put in their place over this trip Apr. 18. Love Is You was taken out of the 1000 Guineas reckoning following her third in the seven-furlong G3 Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket Apr. 14, but Normandie Stud's Listed Radley S.-winning homebred is on track for the G1 Coronation S. that her dam Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) captured in 2012.

Leopardstown's 14-furlong Listed Saval Beg Levmoss S. also features some possible Gold Cup hopefuls, with Ballydoyle's G1 Epsom Derby third Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) tackling last year's G1 Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and the returning dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

USDA Transitions To Private Equine Quarantines In Miami

The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will end equine import quarantine at the Miami Animal Import Center. Instead, equines being imported through the Miami area will spend their quarantine period at one of the three privately operated, USDA-approved quarantine facilities nearby.

Effective July 2, 2021, APHIS will no longer accept new reservations for equine quarantines at the Miami Animal Import Center. Reservations made through July 1 may be completed at the Miami Animal Import Center but by the end of July, all equine quarantines will take place at the private facilities.

APHIS is making this change because the private equine quarantine facilities in the area offer greater capacity and more options for importers than the USDA-operated facility. Importers and brokers can find contact information for the Miami area private equine quarantine facilities on the APHIS website.

APHIS will focus on providing greater customer service for the other services offered at the Miami Animal Import Center and through the Miami Port Office. They include: avian quarantines, import inspections, export inspections, and export endorsement services for veterinary health certificates.

There is typically a seasonal increase in equine imports from October through March, and the local private facilities have the capacity to meet these seasonal demands. We are notifying stakeholders who use the Miami Animal Import Center now, so they will be able to plan ahead for the next busy season.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 from Belmont, Churchill Downs An All Turf Affair

The New York Racing Association will host an all-turf Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday, May 15, in partnership with Churchill Downs.

The sequence kicks off at Belmont Park in Race 8 at 4:50 p.m. Eastern as a loaded field of New York-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up look to graduate in a 1 1/16-mile test on the Widener turf course. Trainer Jorge Abreu will saddle a pair of top contenders in second-time starter Acushla and debutante Dixie Kitten.

Chris Larsen's Acushla debuted with a closing fourth traveling 1 1/16-miles on the Big A turf on December 11 in a state-bred maiden special weight. Racing from last-of-12 and 13 lengths back, the Tiznow bay rallied to finish fourth, defeated 3 1/2-lengths by Mendham. Bloodlines Racing Partnerships' Dixie Kitten, a dark bay daughter of Kitten's Joy, wintered at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida before shipping to New York where she has breezed three times at Belmont Park. Manny Franco has the call aboard Acushla from post 6, while Dixie Kitten will exit post 7 under Jose Lezcano.

Action switches to Churchill Downs in Race 9 [4:55 p.m.] for a 5 ½-furlong allowance optional claiming sprint featuring an overflow field of fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. Trainer Mike Maker sends out Foxxy Belle [post 5, Tyler Gaffalione], whose two-race win streak came to an end last out when seventh in the Unbridled Sidney, a Churchill Downs turf sprint on April 29. She will be tested by a talented field that includes Ghosting Kim [post 7, James Graham], riding a two-race win streak in turf sprints; and seven-time winner Lady of Luxury [post 9, Mitchell Murrill].

In Race 10 [5:52 p.m.] from Belmont, a field of 11 sophomore filly turf sprinters will contest at seven furlongs on the Widener turf in the Grade 3, $100,000 Soaring Softly. The Christophe Clement-trained duo of Hit the Woah [post 5, Junior Alvarado] and Bye Bye [post 11, Eric Cancel], will look to fend off the accomplished multiple stakes winner Tobys Heart [post 6, Manny Franco] for trainer Brian Lynch.

In the penultimate leg, the Grade 3 Louisville [Race 11, 5:58 p.m.] at 12 furlongs on the Churchill Downs turf, a field of 14 older horses is led by the Brad Cox-trained multiple graded stakes winner Arklow. The 7-year-old son of Arch, who captured the 2019 Grade 1 Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont, has banked in excess of $2.6 million and will make his seasonal debut out of post 10 under Florent Geroux.

Closing out the sequence in Race 11[ 6:22 p.m.] at Belmont Park is a field of 10 state-bred maiden claimers sprinting six furlongs on the inner turf. Panster [post 9, Junior Alvarado], a first-time gelding trained by Clement, looms large on the drop after facing state-bred maiden special weight company in his first three starts. Accomplished turf rider Jose Lezcano retains the mount on Tempesta for his seasonal debut from post 10.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. TIF BETTING SERIES PART 10: GREY

Betting pools at one U.S. track were manipulated at least three times in April 2021.

The manipulation can be easy to miss. Pools that get manipulated are likely small to begin with, which means they happen on smaller circuits and the manipulation typically occurs in the last odds update. When it does happen, the result is usually positive for most winning bettors.

So what's the problem?

The manipulation of racing's pari-mutuel pools is often done to exact a far greater profit through the grey or illicit betting markets. Threats to the integrity of racing are incredibly diverse and the presence of grey market betting operators – or GMOs – is growing. The tote pool manipulation can be complemented with race-fixing or doping which compromise race outcomes.
