Dying Wish Fulfilled, Racing Fan Will Be Laid To Rest

A racing fan who fulfilled a dying wish by watching racing from his hospital bed on the infield at Morphettville in Adelaide earlier this month has passed away.

Nigel Latham, 58, died on May 3, just two days after ambulance staff granted his request to stop off at the race meeting while he was on his way home to start palliative care.

He saw Craig Williams ride three winners, including a G1 win on Instant Celebrity for which the jockey said Latham had been the inspiration, later handing him his whip as a souvenir.

The story became global viral news.

Latham, a member of the South Australian Jockey Club who owned shares in two horses, was born in Britain and moved to Australia in 2006. He wanted to be laid to rest in his birthplace.

A family statement said: “Nigel's final wish was to come home where his final resting place will be under the shadow of the Malvern Hills. Internment of ashes will be in Great Malvern at a later date when COVID travel restrictions allow.”

The chosen charities in lieu of flowers are the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in the UK and the Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group.

UK: Jockey Plans To Appeal Seven-Day Ban For Ride Aboard Wayward 2-Year-Old

Jockey Jason Watson plans to appeal a seven-day ban handed down by British Horseracing Authority stewards for his ride aboard the 2-year-old Noisy Night at Nottingham on Tuesday, reports racingtv.com.

The Roger Charlton trainee veered sharply to the left after the start, and wound up nearly a dozen lengths behind the field early on.

Watson guided Noisy Night across the wire in second-last, beaten approximately 26 lengths.

A statement from the stewards acknowledged the slow start, but added that the ban was handed down because Watson: “had failed to ride the colt in such a way that he could be seen to ask Noisy Night for any form of effort or encouragement to get competitive or improve its position in the final stages of the race.”

Watson took to social media, replying: “I feel very victimized and unsure of the true intentions of the BHA. Today I done what any horseman would have done in the circumstances having been onboard a first time out 2 year old. My priority lies with the horses welfare.”

Trainer Charlton was contacted about the ride, and did not have a complaint.

Beyer: ‘Almost Any Serious Horseplayer’ Can Recognize Performances Which ‘Defy Handicapping Logic’

Horseplayer and turfwriter Andrew Beyer, creator of the revolutionary “Beyer” speed figures and 40-year industry veteran, spoke to the Thoroughbred Racing Commentary this week to share his views on the biggest challenge facing horse racing today.

“The biggest challenge facing the sport today is the same one that I wrote about for much of my newspaper career: the widespread use of illegal drugs,” Beyer said. “Almost any serious horseplayer can look at the form of certain trainers' horses and recognize that their performances defy handicapping logic. The cheating trainers and vets have made cynics out of the horseplayers, who should love this game without reservation.”

For more about Beyer, check out John Scheinman's Eclipse Award-winning feature from 2016: Andrew Beyer: Rebel With A Cause.

Beyer himself won an Eclipse Award of Merit in 2017.

New Records For Goffs UK Spring Store Sale

At the conclusion of the two-day Goffs UK Spring Store Sale at Doncaster, demand for quality stores produced record-breaking results across the board.

Although the top price on Tuesday of £105,000 did not match the £165,000 set on Monday, a buoyant middle market resulted in 115 sold from 133 (86.5%) offered. Over the two days of selling, 41 lots brought £50,000 or more, up from 22 lots in 2019. The gross was £7,191,500 with 224 sold from 271 through the ring. The average was £32,105 (+21%) and the median was £27,000 (29%).

One of two six-figure lots on Tuesday was the sale topper, lot 193, a gelded son of Saint des Saints (Fr) from Rathmore Stud. Aiden Murphy and Kim Bailey joined forces to secure the grey for £105,000. He is out of the French listed-placed mare Nomad Attitude (Fr) (Martaline {GB}).

Also breaking into six figures was a filly by Kayf Tara (GB) (lot 295). She was offered by Goldford Stud and drew a winning bid from Olly Murphy and Aiden Murphy. A half-sister to listed-placed chaser Angel of Harlem (GB) (Presenting {GB}), the duo are out of Listed Coolmore NH Sires Mares' Hurdle victress Whoops a Daisy (GB) (Definite Article {GB}).

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented, “Just last month, we were saying what an incredible business this is after the success of the Breeze Up Sale and it's happened again this week. Following unprecedented vendor demand for places in this sale, which led to its expansion to two-days, we were hopeful of a successful sale and we marketed this catalogue as arguably our strongest ever. That pre-sale stance made for a nervous few weeks in the build up to this sale and it is wonderful to have delivered on that hype and produced the best set of statistics in the sale's 60-year history.

“Full credit has to go to our vendors–they have backed this sale and sent us some outstanding horses. From the moment we went out on inspections, it was clear that this sale could be something special and we are delighted to have delivered a strong buying bench who embraced the marked increase in quality and drove the market back to its rightful position as one of the Premier NH Store Sales of the year. For many years, the very best stores were sold in Doncaster and its wonderful to be back at the top table where we belong.

“We would like to wish everyone all the very best with their purchases and we now turn our attention to tomorrow's Spring HIT/P2P Sale. We have two top-class days of Horses-in-Training and Point-to-Pointers and we would like to remind everyone that, due to customer feedback, we are starting tomorrow's sale an hour later at 11 a.m.”
