Gamine Preps For Bigger Prizes in Las Flores

'TDN Rising Star' Gamine (Into Mischief), the reigning Eclipse Award-winning female sprinter, kicks off her 4-year-old season in Sunday's GIII Las Flores S. at Santa Anita, where she faces just three other rivals.

Not among the original nominees to the race, Michael Lund's speedster was supplemented to the six-furlong test for $2,000, and the owner of the fastest five speed figures should make light work of it. The $220,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $1.8-million Fasig-Tipton Midlantic topper was devastating going one turn last season, winning those four races by a combined 38 1/4 lengths. Those included an 18 3/4-length romp in the GI Longines Acorn S. going a mile on the GI Belmont S. undercard June 20 and a seven-length thumping of Venetian Harbor (Munnings) in the GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga Aug. 8. Unable to see out the nine furlongs of the GI Kentucky Oaks–from which she was subsequently DQd from third to ninth–she was back to her best, defeating Serengeti Empress (Alternation) and Bell's the One (Majesticperfection) by a record 6 1/4 lengths in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Gamine is expected to use the Las Flores as a steppingstone to the GI Derby City Distaff May 2 and John Velazquez sticks around to ride.

Stablemate and fellow 'Rising Star' Qahira (Cairo Prince) looks most likely to finish closest to Gamine. Winner of five of her nine career starts, including the Jan. 10 Kalookan Queen S., the 5-year-old exits a third to the Baffert-trained Merneith (American Pharoah) in the GII Santa Monica S. Feb. 13.

Fonner Files: Martinez Chases 2,000th Career Riding Win

Fonner Park CEO Chris Kotulak shares slices of life from the Grand Island, Neb., racetrack throughout the 2021 meet in the Fonner Files.

One month ago, trainer Kelli Martinez saddled her 500th career winner as a trainer. This weekend, Armando Martinez, her first-call jockey and husband of over 20 years, is expected to record his 2,000th career winner.

Over the years and decades, the pair has emerged as a force to contend with at Fonner Park. Together they win races with claiming horses and an occasional allowance horse; they're a no frills and hardscrabble success.

Last year, Armando won his first-ever champion jockey belt buckle at Fon. This year, he and perpetual leading jockey Jake Olesiak have been head-and-head for top jock throughout the season. Armando has paid his dues on the Nebraska circuit and deserves achieving his milestone win.

AAEP Publishes Equine Parvovirus-Hepatitis Virus Guidelines

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has published on its website comprehensive guidelines to educate practitioners about transmission, risk factors, clinical signs and other considerations pertaining to equine parvovirus-hepatitis virus (EqPV-H), a recently discovered virus capable of causing hepatitis in infected horses.

Two distinct etiologies of EqPV-H infection are recognized: biologic transmission and non-biologic transmission. Asymptomatic infection is common; only a small percentage of infected horses will develop clinical signs of liver disease.

“Drs. Thomas Divers and Bud Tennant of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine discovered that this novel parvovirus was associated with the disease 'serum sickness' in horses who had recently been administered a parvovirus-infected biologic,” said guidelines co-author Dr. Piper Norton. “Because of their seminal research and active ongoing research, information will be learned about this virus that will assist in making biologics safer for use in horses and help with diagnosis and treatment of this disease.”

EqPV-H is a recently discovered virus and the focus of rapidly evolving research. These guidelines reflect knowledge at the time of writing. Practitioners are encouraged to seek further consultation for questions regarding clinical cases of EqPV-H.

The Equine Parvovirus-Hepatitis Virus Guidelines were authored by Linda Mittel, MSPH, DVM; Piper Norton, DVM, DACVIM; Joy Tomlinson, DVM, DACVIM; and Thomas Divers, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC. The guidelines were reviewed and approved by the AAEP's Infectious Disease Committee and board of directors. View the guidelines or save them to your mobile device as a PDF file for future reference here.

In addition to EqPV-H, AAEP guidelines for 21 other equine infectious diseases are available here. In addition, two foreign animal disease guidelines — for African horse sickness and Glanders — are also available.

Los Alamitos Summer Thoroughbred Meet To Include Two Graded Stakes

Three stakes – including a pair of graded events – worth $450,000 highlight the Summer Thoroughbred Festival at Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif.

The seven-day meet is scheduled to begin Friday, June 25, and continue through Monday, July 5. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday (June 25-27) the first week and Friday-Monday (July 2-5) the second. Post time will be 1 p.m. PT.

The richest event on the calendar is the Grade 2, $200,000 Great Lady M. Stakes for fillies & mares at 6 ½ furlongs. Captured by 7-1 shot Sneaking Out in 2020, the Great Lady M. will be offered Monday, July 5.

Besides Sneaking Out, the five other winners of the Great Lady M. at Los Alamitos are Doinghardtimeagain (2014), Fantastic Style (2015), Eclipse Award winner Finest City (2016), Skye Diamonds (2017) and Marley's Freedom (2018-2019).

The other graded race is the Grade 3, $150,000 Los Alamitos Derby, which was won a year ago by the Bob Baffert-trained Uncle Chuck. Baffert has won the nine-furlong contest for 3-year-olds, which will be run Saturday, July 3, five times since daytime thoroughbred racing returned to Los Alamitos in 2014, including the last four renewals.

Before Uncle Chuck, the Derby was won by Shared Belief (2014), Gimme Da Lute (2015), Accelerate (2016), eventual 3-year-old champion West Coast (2017), Once On Whiskey (2018) and Game Winner (2019).

The other stakes on the schedule is the $100,000 Bertrando for 3-year-olds & up bred or sired in California. The one-mile race – which returns to its original name (2014-2019) honoring the multiple graded stakes winner and champion older male of 1993 after being contested as the Soi Phet in 2020 – will be run Saturday, June 26.
