One Ruler Pleases Appleby In Racecourse Gallop

Godolphin's One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was seen in action on the Rowley Mile on Wednesday, not in a formal Classic trial but in a racecourse gallop with stable-mate Well Of Wisdom (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

The winner of the G3 Emirates Autumn S. and runner-up to Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in the G1 Vertem Futurity, One Ruler was ridden by former champion jockey Kieren Fallon. He is generally around 10/1 for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas on May 1 and also holds entries for the Cazoo Derby and Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

One Ruler's trainer Charlie Appleby said after the workout, in which he breezed clear of the 106-rated Well Of Wisdom with two furlongs left to run, “I was very pleased with that. He has been to Chelmsford and it was very kind of Newmarket to let us do this. He wasn't going to go for a trial as he has got enough experience already on his CV and he has justified himself to turn up straight to a Guineas.”

He continued, “We have now got a nice piece into him and that puts us where we need to be. He hasn't missed a beat all winter and we will now just go through his normal routine until the Guineas. Kieren explained that he handles that dip flawlessly and he already has the experience of being a course and distance winner, so he ticks a lot of boxes.”

One Ruler is out of the Shamardal mare Fintry (Ire), who beat dual Classic heroine Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) to win the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil over a mile the season after winning the G2 Prix de Sandringham. Appleby said that he feels that her son, too, may be suited to shorter distances than the Derby.

He added, “On the back of winning the Autumn Stakes people start talking about the Derby but the first thing we are looking at is the Guineas and that's the target.

“I don't think he is a stayer as he has got stronger over the winter. I'm very pleased with the way he has done physically. He was a little bit slow coming to hand but I think we have had a hard winter. I couldn't be happier with what I've seen over the last six weeks or so. He has stepped up his work and he has answered every question that we have put to him so far.”

Those days of Ken Uston and counting machines are getting harder to come by since casinos already know about the gambling strategies used. Barn Fire At Belmont Claims The Lives Of Two Horses

Two horses are dead after a barn fire at Barn 60 at Belmont Park on Tuesday evening. According to the New York Racing Association (NYRA), security responded to reports of a barn fire at 6:05 p.m. and was assisted by backstretch employees in the removal of 58 horses stabled there with trainers Wayne Potts and Jeffrey Englehart.

The Elmont Fire Department responded, and witnesses said the fire was extinguished quickly. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation by the New York State Fire Marshal and Nassau County officials.

The horses killed by the fire were both trained by Potts. Their identities were not released NYRA, which was still in the process of notifying connections as of Tuesday evening.

Surviving horses from both trainers were scattered around the Belmont backstretch, housed temporarily in barns that had extra space. Trainer Raymond Handal, who bases out of Barn 41, said he saw a social media post from fellow trainer Robert Falcone Jr. who sounded the alarm about an active blaze. He immediately called Falcone.

“He said that they need help and he just hung up the phone,” Handal said. “It was like something out of a movie. It was horrible.”

Handal and his assistant grabbed lead shanks and ran to Barn 60, but found the fire was already contained and most horses were en route to temporary stabling. Handal began helping bed down stalls in Brad Cox's barn, where he estimated 20 horses are being housed. Several horses did run loose for a period of time, Handal said, but as far as he was aware all were captured without injury.

“Everybody from the racetrack came there,” he said. “Every assistant and trainer you can think of was there moving hay, water buckets and straw.

“It's so scary. When I heard it was Barn 60, it's just across the tunnel from me, and it really puts things into perspective.”

Handal was especially grateful the fire was handled so quickly since there are neighboring barns located very close on either side which could have become endangered also.

Sources say the horses in Barn 60 had been checked at evening feed time, just over an hour earlier, and all had been well in the barn.

No humans were injured in the fire.

“The tragic loss of both horses will be deeply felt by the hard working women and men of the New York racing community, who dedicate themselves to the sport and to the care of these equine athletes,” said Dave O'Rourke, NYRA President & CEO. “That collective dedication and sense of community was on display this evening, when the heroic and selfless response of so many prevented further loss and saved the lives of dozens of horses.”

Practical Joke Filly Tops Strong Opening To Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale

The Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale got off to a strong start with eight lots selling for 200,000 guineas or more and a top price of 360,000 guineas for Tally-Ho Stud's Practical Joke filly.

A total of 65 of the 76 offered lots sold for 6,485,000 guineas, at an average of 99,769 guineas and a median of 80,000 guineas, and a clearance rate of 86 percent.

The top lot on the opening session of the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale was the Practical Joke filly out of Purr and Prowl who realized 360,000 guineas to the bid of agent Alex Elliott. The Tally-Ho Stud consigned filly was purchased on behalf of Peter Brant's White Birch Farm.

“She is a beautiful filly and she is going back to the U.S. and to Chad [Brown], who trained Practical Joke,” said Elliott. “She has been very highly thought of from day one, Roger has raved about her all along. I am delighted to get her, I think she is a perfect filly to go back to the States.

“She is a May foal, she is going to need a bit of time, but she is the one. She did everything. She is a typical Craven Sale type – scopey with quality and will need bit of time, but the more time I think you can give them, the better they can be.”

By the U.S. sire sensation Into Mischief, the Ashford Stud-based stallion Practical Joke was a dual Grade 1 winner as a 2-year-old and finished third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, whilst at three he won the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes at Saratoga.

Consignor Roger O'Callaghan, who previously sold the G1 Natalma Stakes winner La Pelosa at this sale in 2018, commented;

“She is as good a filly as I have had to breeze. She has been a genuine natural from the start. I bought her as a foal with Archie St George, she didn't make the yearling sale and we brought her here. The sire line through Into Mischief is magic.”

Stroud Coleman's Matt Coleman and Peter Swann's Cool Silk Partnership secured the Night of Thunder filly out of Militate for 265,000 guineas, the second highest priced filly on the opening day. The filly is from a classic Juddmonte family with her granddam being the Group 3 winner Orford Ness, dam of the Group winners Weightless and Main Aim, the latter also runner-up in the G1 July Cup.

Swann, who has enjoyed such great success from the breeze-ups, was keen to talk about his purchase:

“We thought her breeze was excellent. She is a real specimen, very strong. She has got a great pedigree – if we can win a race with her we are half way there aren't we? She did the job well. We are delighted and she is the sort of breeze-up horse we are always looking for – she is just built for it, she is not too long in the leg. We just felt it was worth a go,” said Swann, who was wearing a Scunthorpe United face mask as chairman of the football club.

He added: “We don't know a trainer yet, we are just going to wait – I haven't accessed my phone yet, I am sure there will be calls. We have got some great trainers that we use, whoever gets her will do a great job. Of the immediate plans, we will assess her over the next 24 hours and then decide.”

Continuing with plans for the new filly, Swann said: “We hope we can have a go at Royal Ascot, and try and win the bonus before everyone else! That would be nice. We are looking forward to Royal Ascot and hope the filly takes us there.”

Of the success he, Cool Silk and Coleman have enjoyed from breeze-up purchases, Swann said: “I think we have had 62 winners now. We've been doing it a long time.”

The sale was a pinhooking triumph for consignors Star Bloodstock who purchased her last autumn at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 95,000 guineas.
