French Guineas Aim For Mehmento

Group placed Mehmento (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) is eyeing a tilt in the May 16 G1 French 2000 Guineas according to Hambleton Racing's Racing Manager Cosmo Charlton. A winner at Southwell when unveiled in January, the colt added a novice there on Feb. 25 and was a solid second to Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the G3 Greenham S. at Newbury on Apr. 18.

“We've done some work on his stride pattern and that is suggesting he wants seven furlongs to a mile, so that's where we're looking at the moment, rather than coming back in trip,” Charlton said of the Archie Watson trainee.

“Looking ahead, Archie is thinking of the French 2000 Guineas. He just thinks it's a little bit of a sharper test than Newmarket and the ground might also be more suitable.

“He handled that watered ground very well, but he obviously handles the surface at Southwell well, so it if it was on the soft side of good in France it could suit him even better.

“You never say never as far as Newmarket is concerned, but I think we're very much looking forward to the French Guineas as the nature of the race might be a bit better for him.”

Stakes Winner Declaring Love Added to Guineas HIT Sale

Listed winner Declaring Love (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been added as a wildcard to the Tattersalls Guineas Horses in Training Sale. Offered as lot 37, the 4-year-old filly won the Listed Lansdown S. at Bath on Apr. 16 and will be consigned by trainer John Butler's Charnwood Stables. She is from the family of Australian MGSW Mugatoo (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) and stakes winner Elik (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Slated for Apr. 30 at 10 a.m., the sale precedes the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale.

De La Sayette Informed of Cocaine Positive By PJA, Suspended By BHA

Benoit de la Sayett has returned a positive test for cocaine, the Professional Jockeys Association announced on Tuesday morning. The British Horseracing Authority has subsequently suspended De La Sayette until the end of the disciplinary process.

The 18-year-old apprentice jockey to John and Thady Gosden was shown in a video on social media in late March allegedly in the presence of the drug at a party after winning the Unibet Lincoln H. at Doncaster aboard Haqeeqy (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) on Mar. 27. At that time, the PJA defended the young rider and denying the allegation that he “did not and does not take cocaine.”

After the video surfaced, the BHA tested De La Sayett for cocaine metabolites on Mar. 31. His urine sample was negative, but his hair sample was positive for metabolites of the drug. De La Sayette was notified of the positive hair sample by the BHA on Apr. 17, the PJA said. The Frenchman has now admitted to taking the drug and to not being as forthcoming to those advising him, but maintains that the video was from October 2019 and that he did not take the drug then or after winning the Lincoln.

De La Sayette opted not to ride at Brighton where he had mounts on Saturday and has not accepted any more rides in the interim. He is fully co-operating with the BHA's disciplinary process.

De la Sayette said in a statement issued by the PJA, “I cannot apologise enough for my actions, both in respect of taking cocaine and of misleading those around me. Earlier this year I moved back home to live with my parents in order to take myself away from an environment where it was present.

“There are no excuses and I am sorry for letting down my family, the team at Clarehaven Stables, Mr. Gosden and my colleagues in the weighing room.”

PJA Chief Executive Paul Struthers added, “Benoit is a very young man who only turned 18 in December 2020. He has made mistakes but the PJA will continue to support him throughout the process.”

Group Winner Lone Eagle Returns at Sandown

Group 3 winner Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will aim to enhance his G1 Cazoo Derby chances with a start in the G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown Park on Apr. 23. Second at first asking at Sandown in August, he got off the mark later that month at Goodwood over a mile. He quickly added a Sept. 12 Doncaster handicap and the G3 Zetland S. over 10 furlongs at Newmarket in his juvenile swansong on Oct. 10.

Trainer Martyn Meade said, “The plan is to go to Sandown on Friday with Lone Eagle. He improved all the time last year and he did everything we asked of him. He is totally laidback at home. He is a horse that never shows anything at home but just gives his all on the racecourse.

“He coped with Sandown well first time out there when he was a bit unlucky, so hopefully he can go one better there this time.

“After the race on Friday it will tell us where we are and whether we need to work him on our Derby gallop at home but so far he is going the right way.

“I think he is pretty versatile ground-wise and I don't think he is ground dependent as far as I can ascertain, both from what we have seen at home or on the race track.”

Meade remained noncommittal on sending Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) to the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas after her second-place run in the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. on Sunday.

“Statement showed she is good enough for that level on Sunday and Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) just got the first run on us a bit,” Meade said.

“I'm not sure about the 1000 Guineas yet as she had a hard race at Newbury. The 1000 Guineas is in just under a fortnight and I'm just going to see how she is over the next two or three days.

“She is in the race and if she is firing on all cylinders then we would go, but it might just come too quick and we might then go to the French Guineas instead as she does take a bit of minding.

“I do think she is top class but I don't want to back her up quick and end up leaving her season behind.”
