America’s Day At The Races To Broadcast Every Day Of Belmont Spring/Summer Meet

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will present live racing throughout the 48-day Belmont Park spring/summer meet that will run from Thursday, April 22 through Sunday, July 11.

America's Day at the Races will also feature live racing from the 38-day Churchill Downs spring meet that runs Saturday, April 24 to Saturday, June 26, as well as continued coverage of the 57-day Oaklawn Park which runs through May 1.

Opening Night of the Churchill Downs meet on Saturday, April 24 will offer a first post of 6:00 p.m. to kick off Derby Week leading into the Grade 1, $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks on Friday, April 30 and the 147th running of the Grade 1, $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve on Saturday, May 1 as part of a card that includes seven graded stakes.

Each live racing day at Belmont Park will feature coverage on FS2, which will also offer special preview shows for both the Kentucky Derby on Friday, April 30, and the Belmont Stakes on Friday, June 4.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will air on FS2 from 1-5 p.m. Eastern this Thursday, Opening Day at Belmont Park, and from 1-5:30 p.m. on FS2 on Friday that will also show the $100,000 Affirmed Success for 4-year-olds and up going six furlongs in the first stakes of the meet.

Among the notable broadcasts will be live racing coverage on Friday, April 30 from 12-5:30 p.m. followed by a special Kentucky Derby Preview show from 8:30-9 p.m. Both shows will be on FS2. The Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby will both air on NBC.

Saturday, May 8 will see Belmont host five graded stakes, including the meet's first Grade 1 event with the $700,000 Man o' War for 4-year-olds and up going 1 3/8 miles on the turf. The day, which will see FS2 air from 2-6:30 p.m., will also include four Grade 3 contests: the $150,000 Beaugay for older fillies and mares on the turf; the $150,000 Runhappy for 4-year-olds and up sprinting on the main track; the $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap for older fillies and mares sprinting on the dirt; and the $150,000 Peter Pan, a traditional Belmont Stakes prep, for sophomores going 1 1/8 miles.

The spring/summer meet's most heralded day is Saturday, June 5, when Belmont Stakes Day will see nine total graded stakes, including eight Grade 1s, with FS2 showing most of the stacked undercard with coverage from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and wrap-around coverage from 7:15-8:15 p.m. The 153rd running of the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes, the 1 1/2-mile final leg of the Triple Crown, will be aired on NBC.

FS2 will air a special half-hour Belmont Stakes preview show the day prior, June 4, from 6:30-7 p.m.

The Belmont spring/summer meet boasts 59 total stakes races worth $16.95 million in total purse money. In April, first post time at Belmont will be 1 p.m. Eastern, with the exception of Kentucky Oaks Day on Friday, April 30, which will offer a 12:20 p.m. first post.

In May, Belmont will offer a 1 p.m. post time with some exceptions. Thursday cards in May will begin at 3:05 p.m. America's Day at the Races will feature those cards as well as the Twilight Thursday program at Churchill Downs.

America's Day at the Races is also broadcast on NYRA's YouTube channel which boasts more than 65,000 subscribers. Cornell Equine Seminar Series Presents ‘The Ins And Outs Of Equine Asthma’

Equine asthma affects many horses to varying degrees and can ultimately inhibit performance and cause quality of life concerns. This month the signs, causes, diagnostic and treatment options for equine asthma will be presented during the College of Veterinary Medicine's Equine Seminar Series, on Tuesday, April 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. via Zoom.

WHAT: Joy Tomlinson, DVM, DACVIM Large Animal Internal Medicine Specialists and Research Associate will talk about the signs and causes of equine asthma along with diagnostic and treatment options.

Presenter Dr. Tomlinson received her DVM from Cornell University in 2010 and completed a large animal internal medicine residency at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania in 2014. She has been a clinician at Cornell's Equine Hospital since 2014. Dr. Tomlinson is also a Research Associate at the Baker Institute for Animal Health in the Van de Walle lab.

Her current research focuses on the characterization of two recently discovered equine hepatitis viruses: equine parvovirus-hepatitis, the suspected cause of Theiler's disease in horses, and equine hepacivirus, a cause of chronic hepatitis. Her clinical research includes investigation of Equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis (EMPF), which can be mistaken for asthma.

The Cornell Equine Seminar Series is presented by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine's Equine Hospital, the New York State 4-H Horse Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Held on the second Tuesday of most months, equine experts present on important equine health and management topics. The event is free and open to the public.

OBS Fireworks for Gun Runner Colt

The big sales results from the first crop of juveniles by champion Gun Runner (hip 118) continued Tuesday at OBS when a son of the Three Chimneys stallion sold for $850,000 to the bid of bloodstock agent Donato Lanni, acting on behalf of Michael Lund Petersen. The gray juvenile will join the $1.7-million son of Gun Runner purchased by Amr Zedan at last month's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale in the Southern California barn of trainer Bob Baffert.
“He's a beautiful horse,” Lanni said. “Just a cool horse. He did everything he was asked to do and came out of in really good shape. We are just happy, happy, happy to get him. He was the horse we wanted to go home with.”
Of the colt's final price tag, Lanni said, “It's the same thing every year. We all land on the same horses. There is no stealing. It's tough to buy them.”
The colt, who worked a furlong in :10 flat at last week's under-tack show, is out of graded placed Salamera (Successful Appeal) and was consigned by Barry and Shari Eisaman's Eisaman Equine and was bred by the couple's Eico Ventures.
“Barry does a great job,” Lanni said. “He's a good horseman and I'm happy they bred a nice horse.”
The sale was a highwater mark for an Eisaman homebred.
“He is a wonderful horse and we thought he was going to sell well,” Shari Eisaman said as the couple received congratulations out back. “I was going to be thrilled with $500,000. This is the most I've ever sold a homebred for–the homebreds have paid for the farm, they've paid for everything. Thank the Lord.”
The Eisamans purchased Salamera for $300,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. The 11-year-old mare, who was second in the 2012 GII Adirondack S., has an Uncle Mo yearling and she was bred back to Malibu Moon last year.
“Absolutely,” Eisaman said when asked if the result was extra gratifying with a homebred. “When you own the factory, your mares are working when you're sleeping.”

Caddo River Targeting Kentucky Derby

Trainer Brad Cox confirmed Tuesday morning that Shortleaf Stable's GI Arkansas Derby runner-up and 'TDN Rising Star' Caddo River (Hard Spun) is being aimed at a start in the GI Kentucky Derby.

“If all goes well after his work on Saturday, we'll run in the Derby,” Cox said. “He came out of the Arkansas Derby in great shape. He's a sound horse who is training well.”

The speedy Caddo River, a blowout front-running winner of the Smarty Jones S., was fifth as the favorite after conceding the early lead to Concert Tour in the GII Rebel S.
