The Friday Show Presented By Diamond B Farm’s Rowayton: What Just Happened?

Following a big weekend of racing that showcased Triple Crown prospects Greatest Honour in the Fountain of Youth and reigning 2-year-old champion Essential Quality in the Southwest Stakes, all hell broke loose with a series of stories that diminished racing's on-track activities in favor of unsavory events taking place off the track.

In this week's edition of the Friday Show sponsored by Rowayton – standing at Diamond B Farm in Pennsylvania – Paulick Reporter publisher Ray Paulick is joined by bloodstock editor Joe Nevills and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth to review a week that featured an on-camera jockey fight and an incident involving a trainer in the Ireland posing for pictures while sitting on a dead horse – all while animal rights protesters were trying to shut down racing at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California.

America’s Day At The Races Telecast Features Coast-To-Coast Derby Preps

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will air coverage both Saturday and Sunday showcasing live racing action from Aqueduct Racetrack, Oaklawn Park, Tampa Bay Downs, Santa Anita Park and Fair Grounds.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will broadcast Saturday from 5-6 p.m. Eastern on FS2, while Sunday will feature coverage on FS2 from 1:30-6:30 p.m.

Saturday's show will offer coverage of a trio of exciting Kentucky Derby prep races, beginning with the Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham as a talented eight-horse field line up in Race 9 at 5:07 p.m at Aqueduct. The one-turn mile will offer 50-20-10-5 qualifying points to the top-four finishers, with the Chad Brown-trained Highly Motivated enters off back-to-back wins following a runner-up debut effort behind stablemate Founder in August at Saratoga Race Course. Brown and owner Klaravich Stables will also send out Crowded Trade. The chestnut colt registered an 83 Beyer in his winning debut.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert entered graded stakes-placed Freedom Fighter after finishing a close second to stablemate Concert Tour in the Grade 2 San Vicente on February 6 at Santa Anita. Capo Cane, third in the Withers last out, and the Todd Pletcher-trained Atlantic Road will also comprise the field.

In Tampa, another 50-20-10-5-point “Road to the Kentucky Derby” prep will see a stocked 12-horse field compete in the Grade 2, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby at 5:25 p.m.

Candy Man Rocket, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, won the Sam F. Davis on February 6 at Tampa and will return in the 1 1/16-mile race at the same track.

Other contenders in the race include the unbeaten Helium, trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, as well as Pletcher sending out Promise Keeper and Unbridled Honor, both last-out maiden winner. Conditioner Saffie Joseph Jr. also will saddle a pair of challengers in Moonlite Strike and Super Strong.

The third of the three 50-20-10-5 Kentucky Derby prep races on the day will be the Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe in Santa Anita's Race 6 at 5:30 p.m. Baffert, who has dreams of a history-making seventh overall win in the “Run for the Roses,” will look to see if Life is Good can remain unbeaten. Stablemate Medina Spirit, who was the runner-up in the Sham and won the Robert B. Lewis, will give Baffert coast-to-coast challengers on the Derby trail.

Sunday's racing action will feature the $100,000 Biogio's Rose for New York-bred fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up at Aqueduct. Espresso Shot has won a stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack at ages 2, 3 and 4 and will look to register a win at the Big A for a fourth consecutive year she competes against five other contenders going a one-turn mile on Sunday. The Sunday broadcast will also feature live racing from Oaklawn, Tampa Bay Downs and Fair Grounds Race Course.

America's Day at the Races is also broadcast on NYRA's YouTube channel which boasts more than 65,000 subscribers. Gulfstream: Friday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed At $1.1 Million

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1.1 million Friday at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Thursday for the eighth straight racing day since a lucky bettor broke the jackpot for $712,824.06 Feb. 22. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $3,106.70 Thursday.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-10, including highlighted by multiple graded-stakes winner Sally's Curlin's turf debut in Race 9, a mile optional claiming allowance for older fillies and mares on turf. The Dale Romans-trained 5-year-old daughter of Curlin, who captured the 2019 Hurricane Bertie (G3) at Gulfstream, most recently finished seventh in the Inside Information Jan. 23.

WHO'S HOT: Leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. added three more wins to his swelling meet-leading total, scoring aboard Miahsolomiah ($7) in Race 1, Cairo Campaign ($5) in Race 3 and Katama Moonlight ($3.40) in Race 7.

Edgard Zayas doubled aboard Candy Flower ($12) in Race 5 and Game Boy Benny ($7) in Race 8.

Trainer Anthony Quartarolo and Jose Ortiz teamed for two wins, scoring with Load Me Up ($7.20) in Race 2 and Going For Gold ($5.40) in Race 10.

Saffie Joseph Jr. saddled a pair of winners, Candy Flower ($12) in Race 5 and Katama Moonlight ($3.40) in Race 7.

Penn National’s Leading Rider Edwin Gonzalez Shifts Tack To Gulfstream

Edwin Gonzalez, the leading rider at Penn National the last two years with more than 400 victories and a 2020 winning percentage of 33 percent, is moving his tack to Gulfstream Park.

Gonzalez, who rode five winners Wednesday evening at Penn National and six winners there Feb. 17, will ride in Pennsylvania through March 19 before heading to Florida. He is expected to ride in Tampa on Florida Cup Day March 28 before riding at Gulfstream.

Gonzalez, who finished second in wins during the 2017 Tampa Bay Downs meet and won six races there on March 10 of that year, has won more than 1,430 races since coming to the U.S. from his native Puerto Rico in 2013. He was ranked 14th in wins in North America last year and 11th in wins in 2019.

Kevin Meyocks, agent for Luca Panici, will represent Gonzalez.

“We've been north here the last two years and it's been good, but we only race two days a week and I'd like to ride at a better track with some better horses,” said Gonzalez, who is moving along with his wife and three children. “There's nice weather down here. We can take the kids out to the park. I talked to Kevin, he's a good agent, and when opportunity comes, you have to take advantage of it.”

Gonzalez, a multiple graded-stakes winner in Puerto Rico, guided Ghost Hunter for his first graded-stakes success in the 2017 Arlington Handicap (G3).
