Maurice Filly Lands Hochi Hai Fillies’ Revue

The G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas is on Apr. 11, and Shigeru Pink Ruby (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) punched her ticket for that Classic affair with a neck victory in the Hochi Hai Fillies' Revue over 1400 metres on Sunday.

Sent off at 13-1, the chestnut perched in a tracking sixth as Paul Neyron (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) carried the field into the single bend. She faced a wall of horses to get through turning into the home straight, but she burst in between horses late and nailed new leader Yoka Yoka (Jpn) (Squirtly Squirt) narrowly on the line. Minnie Isle (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}) rounded out the trifecta another length behind. Favoured Opal Moon (Jpn) (Victoire Pisa {Jpn}) was dead last for much of the race, but made up some ground late on to take ninth.

A Hanshin debut winner over 1400 metres, Shigeru Pink Ruby was unplaced in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in December and Sunday was her 3-year-old bow.

Pedigree Notes

From the first crop of Maurice, Shigeru Pink Ruby is the second group winner for her young sire after G3 Nikkan Sports Sho Shinzan Kinen victor Pixie Knight (Jpn).

The winner's dam is unraced, but she has already left Shigeru Pink Dia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), who ran second in the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas and third in the G1 Shuka Sho. Moonlight Bay also foaled 2-year-old colt Shigeru Rosemary (Jpn) (Silver State {Jpn}) and a yearling filly by Daiwa Major (Jpn). The daughter of Group 3 winner Moonlight Dance (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) was covered by Kizuna (Jpn) last spring. Moonlight Dance is a half-sister to G1 Irish Derby hero Grey Swallow (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}).

Study: Shared Water Sources Contribute To EHV Transmission

A study has found that equine herpesviruses are able to replicate in freshwater sources in the wild and remain infectious to spread among animals, especially during drought conditions. In the wild, many species of animal will congregate around freshwater sources to drink, potentially allowing for virus transmission between species.

Drs. Anisha Dayaram, Peter Seeber, Alexandre Courtiol, Sanatana Soilemetzidou, Kyriakos Tsangaras, Mathias Franz, Gayle McEwen, Walid Azab, Petra Kaczensky, Jörg Melzheimer, Marion East, Oyunsaikhan Ganbaatar, Christian Walzer, Nikolaus Osterrieder and Alex Greenwood sampled water holes in areas of Africa and Mongolia that had significant dry seasons. They determined that EHV can remain stable and infectious in water under these conditions.

The team reported that animals forced to congregate around water supplies become stressed. Stressed equids can shed viruses like EHV, which enter the water supply when the animal drinks. Rhinos have tested positive for EHV when they share watering holes with zebras in the wild.

The EHVs found in Africa and Mongolia are nearly identical to those found in domestic horses, suggesting EHVs have changed very little over time. The research team suggests that additional research be done to determine other viruses that may use water as a vector to spread among animals.

Prevalence on Target for Derby Prep

Godolphin's Prevalence (Medaglia d'Oro), who followed a 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy debut going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Jan. 23 with a one-mile allowance tally in Hallandale last Thursday, could make his next start in a GI Kentucky Derby prep, with the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland the same day, and the Apr. 10 GI Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park all in play.

“His maiden win told us something, his allowance win told us even more and his next race will decide where we go from there. Each race is its own entity,” Jimmy Bell, President of Godolphin's North American division, told the NYRA notes team. “We'll all be curious to see what his best distance is. He showed a nice step up from seven-eighths to a mile.”

Of the colt's possible next start, Bell added, “It becomes a question of where his energy level is and it comes down to a timing thing. His past races gave him some good experiences and when asked, he responded professionally.”

Godolphin's Lake Avenue (Tapit), winner of last week's Heavenly Prize S., could return to Aqueduct for the Apr. 2 GIII Distaff S., according to Bell. The 4-year-old filly won the 2019 GII Demoiselle S., but was winless in four starts last season. She is now two-for-two in 2021 and has impressed connections with a new ability to settle off the pace.

“In her last two races she showed different dimensions where she can break, settle and monitor the situation from off the pace. She got in a good position in both races and when the jockey said, 'Go,' she responded,” Bell said. “Her last two races really gave us a lot of confidence moving forward. We were a little uncertain with her, but she just gave us two really good performances.”
