Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Jump Start Tops 2020 Stallion Award Earners

Runners by Pennsylvania's stallions generated nearly $850,000 in stallion awards in 2020, and a familiar name found himself at the top of the sire list.

The late Jump Start was the Keystone State's leading resident by stallion award earnings, bringing in $172,796.02 for owner Northview Stallion Station Inc.

The owner of a Pennsylvania-based stallion at the time of a foal's conception is eligible for stallion awards generated by that foal. Stallion owners receive 10 percent of the purse earned when a registered Pennsylvania-bred and- sired runner finishes in the top three in any pari-mutuel race within the state.

Jump Start was Pennsylvania's leading sire by general earnings in 2020, with 155 runners and 71 winners making nearly $3.3 million.

He accounted for two of the top five earners of stallion awards, led by It's a Journey, who generated $10,310 in that category last year. The veteran campaigner had her best season yet in 2020, featuring victories in the Mrs. Penny Stakes and an optional claiming race at Parx Racing.

Jump Start also had Fire's Finale add $8,835 in stallion awards. The colt generated awards in two races during his juvenile season, breaking his maiden at Parx, then taking the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes.

Rooks Nest Upsets Grenadier Guards

Saturday's G3 Falcon S. at Chukyo featured the return of last year's Japanese champion 2-year-old colt Grenadier Guards (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}), a son of American champion sprinting mare Wavell Avenue (Harlington), but it was the mild longshot Rooks Nest (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) who led nearly gate to wire to post a mild upset when winning by a head over Grenadier Guards.

Hustled from the rail draw, Rooks Nest grabbed the lead exiting the first furlong and led a three-deep flight of runners, including Grenadier Guards in the middle, by a length and a half down the backstretch. Grenadier Guards pulled his way up to race off Rooks Nest's shoulder rounding the bend, but Rooks Nest stole a length upon straightening as Yuga Kawada wound up Grenadier Guards. Rooks Nest became briefly disorganized after jockey Hideaki Miyuki dropped his outside rein, but the pair regrouped in time to hold off Grenadier Guards's rally. A winner at third asking going a mile at Hanshin on Nov. 15, Rooks Nest resumed with a second to a fellow son of Maurice, Pixie Knight (Jpn), in the G3 Nikkan Sports Sho Shinzan Kinen over that trip on Jan. 10.

Pedigree Notes

Rooks Nest is the third group winner from the first crop of the Japanese Horse of the Year Maurice, himself the winner of six Group 1s in Japan and Hong Kong over a mile and 2000 metres. Rooks Nest is out of a placed daughter of the G3 May Hill S. winner and G1 Sun Chariot S. third Summitville (GB) (Grand Lodge). The G2 Goldene Peitsche winner Raffelberger (Ger) (Auenadler {Ger}) appears under the fourth dam.

Fonner Files: How The Orphan Kist And Tondi Stakes Got Their Names

Fonner Park CEO Chris Kotulak shares slices of life from the Grand Island, Neb., racetrack throughout the 2021 meet in the Fonner Files.

This Saturday, we have a pair of stakes races due to the cancellation of the final two races last Saturday.

The first is the Orphan Kist named after a beast of a Nebraska-bred. In the late 1980s and early '90s, she won 28 of 100 races and finished second another 28 times, with 16 thirds.

The striking dark bay with a blaze earned over $630,000 with a remarkable 17 wins at Ak-Sar-Ben. She won four times at Fon and also won at: Arlington Park, Arapahoe Park, Canterbury Park, Louisiana Downs and Remington Park. The homebred of Jane and Michael Moreland was trained by Linda Davidson and she was typically ridden by Tim Brown or Bobby Cordova.

The Tondi is the other Saturday stakes named after a mighty Thoroughbred. Tondi won 25 of 79 races and earned just over $100,000 in the late '50s. He once held three track records at Fonner Park and was a multiple stakes winner at Fon, Ak-Sar-Ben, Centennial Park, throughout the New Mexico circuit and in Chicago.

Speaking of Saturday, seven of our ten races drew full fields. On the brink of Spring, we're finally getting our legs underneath us. Plus, the daffodils have begun to punch up.

Tondi was a multiple stakes winner at Fonner Park during the 1960s.
