Gulfstream’s ‘Canter For The Cause’ To Support Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

Gulfstream Park will once again provide equine owners and enthusiasts a unique experience to walk, trot or canter their horse across the legendary track when it plays host to the second Canter for the Cause on Monday, March 15.

Participants will choose from three groups (walk, trot, canter) when registering. All participants will have a chance to have their pictures taken in the winner's circle by Gulfstream Park. All riders must wear helmets, proper boots or shoes, and face coverings. All horses must have a valid and current Coggins to show at registration. Temperature checks will be taken upon entrance.

Entries close Monday, March 8, 2021 at 5 p.m. There is no day of registration.

Registration is $50. All proceeds from the event will go to Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding.

Canter for the Cause is sponsored by Gulfstream Park and the Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.

Participants will need to register by 10 a.m. the day of Canter for the Cause. The first group will go out at 11 a.m.

“This was such a well-received event last year for all the participants and volunteers that we wanted to hold it again within state and local health protocols, as well as our own,” said Mike Lakow, Vice President of Racing at Gulfstream. “Canter for the Cause is a great way to raise awareness for Thoroughbred aftercare. Keeneland Reveals 2021 Digital Sales Ring Schedule

The Keeneland Digital Sales Ring, the stand-alone online auction platform that debuted in 2020, has scheduled seven mixed sales for 2021.

The first digital sale is set for March 23, followed by sales in May, June, July, August, October and December (see dates for sales, entry open/close and catalog availability at the conclusion of this release).

Keeneland developed the Digital Sales Ring together with Kentucky-based technology company Horseco and in 2020 conducted sales in June, October and December. The platform offers Keeneland the flexibility to host small, select online auctions throughout the year in addition to its four major live sales in January, April, September and November. These online auctions also allow sellers the opportunity to take advantage of timely updates in offering racing and breeding stock.

“We are excited to announce the 2021 schedule for the Keeneland Digital Sales Ring, which continues to grow the online market and expand the services Keeneland is able to provide its sales clients,” Keeneland director of sales development Mark Maronde said. “The Digital Sales Ring offers tremendous convenience and flexibility for sellers and buyers, who can fully participate in the auction process and present horses for sale regardless of location.”

On the day of each sale, online bidding will open at 10 a.m. ET and begin to close at 2 p.m.

Charles Town Cancels Wednesday Card Ahead Of Winter Storm

Due to the winter weather expected to move through West Virginia on Wednesday evening, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races has cancelled its live racing program for Wednesday, Feb. 10.

The property will remain open for limited simulcasting.

Live racing is currently slated to resume on Thursday, Feb. 11 with a first race post time of 7:00 P.M. EST.

Kentucky HHR Bill Passes House Committee, On To House Floor

Senate Bill 120, which would expand Kentucky's definition of parimutuel wagering to include historical horse racing (HHR) machines, unanimously passed the House Committee for Licensing, Occupations and Administration Regulations on Wednesday morning.

The bill passed the state senate Tuesday afternoon on a vote of 22-15.

The house committee heard from a nearly identical group of proponents and opponents to the bill as the Senate Committee on Licensing and Occupations last week. The house committee is chaired by Rep. Adam Koenig (R-District 69), who is also the legislative representative on the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council, a committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. The senate committee is chaired by Sen. John Schickel (R-District 11) who is the bill's sponsor and also fielded questions from members of the house committee.

Horseman Tommy Drury provided the committee with his outlook on the way the cash influx from HHR has kept his business afloat, while representatives from The Family Foundation expressed a variety of concerns, framing the bill as a “millionaire's bailout” and citing concerns about the constitutionality of the bill's treatment of parimutuel wagering.

The bill's supporters have repeatedly expressed the reliance of Kentucky's racing industry on the increased purses and breeders' incentives from HHR income, with particular focus on the many jobs supported by that revenue and the secondary industries that rely on racing for business.

There are a few different points of opposition expressed by legislators who spoke against the bill during its senate vote Tuesday; some question the tax structure for HHR income, saying the state does not benefit enough from the income. Others believe a constitutional amendment is the only sure way to make HHR legal because the definition of legal gambling in Kentucky is outlined in the state's constitution. Still others have concerns about the potential for gambling addiction among HHR users, which they say disproportionately impacts poor families.

Early reports have indicated the bill could face more opposition in the house than it did in the senate. The bill may now go to the House floor for a vote, though it's unclear when that will happen. Wednesday begins the thirteenth day of the Kentucky General Assembly regular session, which is limited to 30 days this year.
