Carryover Helps Swell Stronach 5 Pool; 478 Winners Worth $923.70 Each

The Stronach 5 had 478 winning tickets Friday, each returning $923.70.

There was a $97,891.79 carryover and $389,936.43 of new money wagered. The Stronach 5 features an industry-low 12-percent takeout and races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields and Gulfstream Park.

The Stronach 5 kicked off with Laurel's eighth race, a maiden event for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs won by first-time starter Golden Warrior ($7.60), saddled by Dale Capuano and ridden by Alexander Crispin. Laurel's ninth race served as the second leg of the Stronach 5, won by 6-5 favorite Ego Trip ($4.60).

The Stronach 5 headed west for Santa Anita's third race. Colosi ($11), trained by Mark Glatt, won the fourth race of his career and the third leg of the Stronach 5. Golden Gate's third race, the fourth leg of the Stronach 5, went to 3-5 favorite Extractor ($3.40).

The Stronach 5 wrapped up at Gulfstream with its 10th race, a wide-open maiden claimer at five furlongs on the turf won by K's Running Free ($9.80).

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Tampa Bay Downs: Glyshaw Saddles 500th Career Winner

Tim Glyshaw's immediate reaction to scoring career victory No. 500 in Friday's 10th race at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar, Fla., was tongue-in-cheek, but also reflected the life of a trainer who has experienced numerous highs and his share of setbacks since taking out his license in 2004.

“If I have to wait this long to win the next 500,” he said, to no one in particular, “I'll be really old.”

The head victory by 3-year-old colt Cochise Charlie in the five-furlong turf event in his second career start might have aged the 52-year-old Glyshaw a bit, but he was understandably ecstatic after the Kentucky-bred and jockey Roberto Alvarado, Jr., hung on to defeat Beach Warrior in 57.31 seconds.

“I thought (Alvarado) did a real good job. I'm glad he decided not to ding-dong it on the lead (with pace-setter Good Boy Roy) and kept him a little off of it,” Glyshaw said. “It taught him a little something, and I'm very happy the way he liked the turf. I guess we'll keep him on it now.”

Glyshaw was also happy to win No. 500 for owner Wayne Spalding of Kentucky, for whom he trained 2017 Grade 1 Pattison Canadian International Stakes winner Bullards Alley. “Wayne just got diagnosed with a serious illness, so it is pretty special to win this for him,” Glyshaw said.

Glyshaw, who came up in the sport under the late Bob Holthus, also trained multiple-G2 winner Bucchero, who competed in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2017 and 2018.

“This ranks right up there with going to the Breeders' Cup twice and to Royal Ascot with Bucchero and winning the Pattison with Bullards Alley,” Glyshaw said. “Winning 500 races is something I never imagined doing when I started training.”

Caddo River Demolishes Smarty Jones Rivals As Oaklawn Meet Begins

Breaking from the outside post in a field of seven, Shortleaf Stable's homebred Caddo River went straight to the front under Florent Geroux, set all the fractions and pulled away to a 10 1/4-length victory in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on opening day of the 2021 Oaklawn meet in Hot Springs, Ark.

Caddo River, trained by Brad Cox, paid $3.20 to win as the 3-5 favorite after traveling one-mile around two turns in 1:38.19. Cowan finished second at 2-1 odds for Steve Asmussen, with stablemate Big Thorn 7 1/4 lengths back in third and Moonlite Strike fourth.

The Smarty Jones is an official qualifying points race for the Kentucky Derby offering 10-4-2-1 points to the top four finishers. In accordance to new rules put in place for 2021, starters cannot earn qualifying points if they are administered race-day Lasix to treat exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage. All seven starters in the Smarty Jones raced Lasix-free.

By Hard Spun out of the Congrats mare Pangburn, Caddo River came into the Smarty Jones off a 9 1/2-length maiden victory at Churchill Downs Nov. 15 going a one-turn mile. He finished second in two previous races, a seven-furlong maiden test at Saratoga Sept. 5 and a Belmont test at the same distance on Oct. 11.

Caddo River outhustled Hardly Swayed for the early lead, going the opening quarter mile in :23.12 and the half in :47.16. Going into the far turn, Caddo River began to open up and he was well in control after six furlongs in 1:12.42 and seven panels in 1:25.26. He cruised to the sixteenth pole short-stretch finish line while widening his advantage with every stride.

“He broke very alertly,” said Geroux. “Very nice and relaxed. You want to see these type horses doing it the right way. It's easy to go to the lead and keep on going. You want them to relax and do everything right. He did everything perfect. The distance doesn't look like it's going to be a problem. Very excited about what's coming up ahead of us with him. Looks like he can run all day, which is a good problem. Hopefully, we can go on, go up the stepping stones and have a nice horse for the first Saturday in May.”

John Ed Anthony, a Hot Springs resident who races in the name of Shortleaf Stable, has won the G1 Arkansas Derby on three occasions, with Temperence Hill in 1980, Demons Begone in 1987 and Pine Bluff in 1992. With Caddo River likely headed down the path to the April 10 renewal of the meet's biggest race, he could be in line for a fourth.
