Park Lane Stables Fundraiser Underway

A crowdfunding effort has been started for Park Lane Stables RDA (Riding for the Disabled), a riding school charity that provides therapy and riding lessons for people with and without disabilities in London. Run by Natalie O'Rourke, the Teddington-based riding school's landlord is not renewing their lease and selling the property. A total of £1 million is needed by Feb. 24 to enable Park Lane to purchase the property and secure their future in the community. The riding school has already raised over £183,000 toward their goal.

Park Lane first drew international notice with #tinyponyatyourwindow during the first London lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stable volunteers cheered those self-isolating with their pony Annie's Whizz, who eventually would visit over 300 people in their homes, schools, hospitals and care homes. Malibu Moon Filly Flashes Serious Speed at Gulfstream; Named TDN Rising Star

Gary and Mary West homebred Slumber Party (Malibu Moon) showed off a high cruising speed Sunday to easily best a well-bred group of fillies at Gulfstream and earn the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction. With an upbeat worktab at Palm Meadows on display, the 5-1 shot broke on top and quickly opened up on her competition down the backside. She posted splits of :22.50 and :45.33, and rounded the bend five or six lengths clear. Showing no signs of stopping from there, the chestnut cantered home a geared-down 7 1/2-length winner, stopping the clock in 1:23.05 for seven panels. Fellow firster Pass the Champagne (Flatter), well backed herself at 3-1 off a 12-1 morning line for the typically patient Rusty Arnold barn, got up for second. The winner's dam Devilish Lady (Sweetsouthernsaint) flashed South Florida speed herself, annexing the 2011 GIII Azalea S. at Calder. She has a 2-year-old colt by Pioneerof the Nile and a yearling filly by Uncle Mo. Devilish Lady was bred to former West colorbearer West Coast for 2021.

Benbatl to Resurface in Europe

Godolphin's Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a Group 1 winner in Australia, Germany and Dubai, will not compete in either the Dubai World Cup Carnival or the Saudi Cup. The 7-year-old entire will instead make his next appearance in Europe according to his trainer Saeed bin Suroor. The bay signed off last year with a third in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket on Sept. 25.

“Benbatl will not run in Dubai or Saudi Arabia this year–we'll keep him for a European campaign and look to get him out in May,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “He's still a good horse, but this year we are looking for better results from him. Last year didn't go his way–the ground never seemed right, [and] there is no point running him on soft.

“He's not going to stud just yet, anyway. We've got him for this year, then we'll keep options open. Everything over a mile, nine furlongs and a mile and a quarter is suitable for him, that's what we think.”

Keeneland, Red Mile Temporarily Closing Historical Horse Racing Gaming Room

The Keeneland Association and Red Mile issued a joint statement on Sunday saying the two Lexington, Ky., companies were temporarily shutting down historical horse racing (HHR) gaming machines at The Red Mile harness track. The closure, which takes effect at the end of business on Sunday, comes in the wake of a decision last week by the Kentucky Supreme Court not to rehear the case in which the court found in favor of the Family Foundation by a 7-0 decision, saying Exacta Systems HHR games do not qualify as pari-mutuel wagering because wagers are pooled from multiple races that determine the outcome of a bet made at a specific machine.

“We were disappointed the Kentucky Supreme Court denied our petition for rehearing,” the statement said. “At this time, Keeneland and Red Mile have made the very difficult decision to temporarily close historical horse racing operations until there is more clarity surrounding the situation. We have confidence the Kentucky legislature will continue its efforts to protect jobs and state revenue generated by historical horse racing, as well as protect Kentucky's signature horse racing industry.”

Promotional materials from Red Mile Gaming & Racing indicate the facility has 138 themed HHR games on which to bet. Sixty-eight of those games are from Exacta, with the remaining machines distributed by Ainsworth and Parimax.

In the wake of the September Supreme Court ruling, Exacta officials said they would make software adjustments to meet the Supreme Court standards.

None of the other HHR operators in Kentucky have indicated they would shut down while awaiting legislative action. Churchill Downs Inc.'s Derby City Gaming in Louisville and Oak Grove Gaming and Racing in Christian County both use Ainsworth games, which were not in place when the Family Foundation suit was filed in 2012. Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky., the first track to embrace HHR, also remains open.

Historical horse racing has added millions of dollars to Kentucky purses annually since approved by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in 2010.
