‘She’s Going To Be A Knockout Yearling’: First Foal Is A Filly For Spendthrift Farm’s Coal Front

Spendthrift Farm's Coal Front, the five-time graded winner and earner of over $1.8 million, sired his first reported foal on Jan. 26 when a filly was born at Shade Tree Farm in Ocala, Fla.

“This is a good foal. Nice, big, strong filly with a lot of leg, good shoulder and hip. I like her best of the three foals the mare's had,” said Bert Pilcher, owner of Shade Tree Farm. “She was quickly up and quickly nursed, everything was perfect. If I owned the stallion, I'd sure be happy about this foal. I think she's going to be a knockout yearling.”

Bred by Tracy Pinchin & Kenneth D'Oyen, the flashy bay filly is out of the Wildcat Heir mare Defying Gravity, an 11-time winner on the track who hails from the immediate family of multiple graded stakes winner and sire Too Much Bling.

An earner of $1,825,280, Coal Front captured graded stakes at five different distances – from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on dirt – and at five different racetracks. After a dominant maiden win on debut at Keeneland and allowance victory over eventual Grade 1 winner Patternrecognition at Belmont in his second start, the striking dark bay colt stayed undefeated with a victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga. He closed out his 3-year-old season with a win in the six-furlong G3 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx, earning a 107 Beyer – one of the fastest of the year by a sophomore.

Coal Front won the seven-furlong G3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream as a 4-year-old and carried his top form into his 5-year-old season, winning the 1 1/16-mile, $500,000 G3 Razorback Stakes at Oaklawn and $1.5-million G2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan.

A $575,000 2-year-old purchase, Coal Front was victorious in eight of 13 lifetime starts before retiring to Spendthrift, where he is set to stand his second season for a fee of $5,000 S&N.

Who Do You ‘Like’ in the Swale?

A last out runaway stakes winner will meet a pair of promising maiden winners in Saturday's GIII Claiborne Farm Swale S. going seven furlongs at Gulfstream.

Save a forgettable trip to the post losing his rider at the start in the Jean Lafitte S. at Delta last November, Drain the Clock (Maclean's Music) has done no wrong in three other attempts, headed by a runaway, front-running tally in Gulfstream's six-furlong Limehouse S. Jan. 2.

“The Swale is a good opportunity to stretch him out an eighth of a mile more. We feel like it's a race that's his for the taking,” trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. said. “His last race was a breakthrough race. We always thought a lot of him.”

The rail-drawn Likeable (Frosted) earned a trip to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile following an 8 1/4-length maiden breaker at Belmont going a mile second out Sept. 19. The bay, however, could do no better than 13th after pressing a hot pace while making his two turn debut at the Championships in Lexington most recently Nov. 6.

“We kind of threw him to the wolves in the Breeders' Cup. He went too fast early on,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We've regrouped since then and he's been training well. We feel like backing up to seven furlongs will be a good distance for him.”

By George (Into Mischief) impressively handled his business on debut for Christophe Clement over sharp next out winner Too Boss (El Padrino) at Aqueduct Dec. 19. Irad Ortiz, Jr. has the call on the 2-1 morning-line favorite.

Justify, American Pharoah Halters Up For Auction To Benefit CASA Of Lexington

CASA of Lexington has secured a “triple crown” of horse halters from legendary racehorses, which are up for auction as part of the nonprofits 2021 Bourbon and the Bayou virtual gala. Horse halters worn by Triple Crown-winning Thoroughbreds Justify (2018) and American Pharoah (2015) are available to bid on now on the virtual event's website, BandB2021.givesmart.com. In addition, a halter is up for bid that was worn by California Chrome, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 2014.

CASA of Lexington's Bourbon and the Bayou event is scheduled for the evening of Feb. 12, the “Fat Friday” before Fat Tuesday. Normally a sold-out gala at Lexington's prestigious Carrick House, this year, the event has gone virtual and will be free to attend over Zoom.

Attendance is not required to bid on silent auction items like the horse halters. The auction went live Friday, Jan. 29, and bids close on all items promptly at 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12. Winners of many of the biggest auction items will be announced live shortly after 9 p.m., on the Bourbon and the Bayou Zoom event and via Facebook Live on CASA of Lexington's Facebook page.

“Anyone interested in these champions' halters – or any of our other amazing items – can bid online from any location right up until the auction closes,” said Melynda Jamison, CASA of Lexington Executive Director. “This year, we're also auctioning a week-long rental of a seven-bedroom beach house in Jamaica, autographed Kentucky basketballs and much more. The best part is 100% of the proceeds go to help CASA of Lexington advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in central Kentucky.”

More information about the event, which includes a bourbon tasting experience led by a sommelier with Distilled Living, is available at BandB2021.givesmart.com. Anyone wishing to attend and purchase a bourbon tasting kit to enhance their experience is encouraged to do so quickly before supplies run out. The Justify halter is item 308; the American Pharoah halter is item 309; and the California Chrome halter is item 310.

CASA of Lexington's trained and supervised volunteers advocate through the family court systems in Fayette, Bourbon, Woodford and Scott counties to ensure all victims of child abuse and neglect are safe and thrive in a permanent home.
