Tattersalls February Sale Goes Virtual

Tattersalls will be holding its first sale of 2021 as a “live virtual” event as strict lockdown measures remain in place in Britain and Ireland.

Scheduled to run on Feb. 4 and 5, the mixed sale of almost 500 lots will take place online, with bids being taken through the live internet bidding platform or via telephone to a member of the Tattersalls team. No horses or vendors will be at Park Paddocks. Tattersalls also plans to stage an extra sale on Wednesday, Mar. 31 and Thursday, Apr. 1 to cater for any vendors who prefer to take part in a conventional sale on site.

“The decision to stage the Tattersalls February Sale in a live virtual format has been taken in the best interests of all concerned and reflects our commitment to providing the best possible working environment for participants at all of our sales, in whatever capacity they may be attending,” said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony.

“The decision also recognises the increased difficulties surrounding domestic and international travel and it was felt that the prudent option was to stage the February Sale in a manner which allows vendors and purchasers alike to participate with confidence and in full compliance with prevailing rules and regulations. Our live internet bidding platform proved to hugely popular with buyers throughout last year, particularly at mixed sales similar to the February Sale, and we are confident that this live virtual format is the best option under the current difficult circumstances which we all continue to endure. In addition to promoting the February Sale to as many prospective buyers as possible, our bloodstock sales team will liaise with vendors with regard to the requirements of the live virtual sale model.”

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to play havoc with the bloodstock sales calendar, Goffs has already announced that its February Sale in Ireland on Feb. 9 and 10 will be an online sale for breeding stock, older horses and 2-year-olds, with a session of weanlings scheduled to sell at its Kildare Paddocks on Tuesday, Mar. 2. The Goffs UK January Sale will offer National Hunt mares and horses in training online on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and the National Hunt weanlings and point-to-pointers will now be offered at the Doncaster sales complex on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The Tattersalls February Sale will begin each day at 1oam and the catalogue can now be viewed online.

Profitable Favourite To Be Champion Freshman

The start of the Flat season may be more than two months away but there is already plenty of interest in the freshman sires of 2021, and Darley's Profitable (Ire) has been made 3/1 favourite by Fitzdares to take the championship.

Ed Guiver, Head of Racing for Fitzdares, said, “We love pricing this market, which would be impossible to price were it not for the Weatherbys Stallion Book used alongside the Weatherbys Return of Mares.

“It was hard to split the front four in the market but Profitable by the sire of sires in Invincible Spirit (Ire) has got the nod. That said, the sector is not without a bevy of shrewd judges, so market movers will be telling.”

The betting company makes the Coolmore duo of Caravaggio and Churchill (Ire) joint-second favourites at 4/1, with Cotai Glory (GB), who hails from Tally-Ho Stud, home to 2020 champion first-season sire Mehmas (Ire), third favourite at 5/1. All of the first four in the betting have at least 124 foals from their first crop.

Guiver added, “Ulysses (Ire) is a dark horse, jungle drums suggest he's produced some early types, and we suspect Ribchester (Ire) will have his fans. If he had more on the ground, Time Test (GB) would have been shorter odds for sure,” added Guiver.

Kelsey Riley examined the full quota of European first-season sires in her Value Sires feature in Monday's TDN.

Tattersalls To Stage February Sale As Live Virtual Sale

Owing to the increasingly stringent lockdown measures in place in Britain and Ireland, Tattersalls will be staging the forthcoming February Sale exclusively as a live virtual sale taking place on the scheduled dates of Thursday, Feb. 4 and Friday, Feb. 5 with no horses, vendors or purchasers on site. Tattersalls will also hold an additional conventional fixture at its Park Paddocks base in Newmarket on Wednesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 1st.

All bidding at the live virtual February Sale will take place either online through the well – established Tattersalls live internet bidding platform or telephone bidding through members of the Tattersalls team.

Announcing the change of format to Europe's premier midwinter sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The decision to stage the Tattersalls February Sale in a live virtual format has been taken in the best interests of all concerned and reflects our commitment to providing the best possible working environment for participants at all of our sales, in whatever capacity they may be attending. The decision also recognizes the increased difficulties surrounding domestic and international travel and it was felt that the prudent option was to stage the February Sale in a manner which allows vendors and purchasers alike to participate with confidence and in full compliance with prevailing rules and regulations. Our live internet bidding platform proved to hugely popular with buyers throughout last year, particularly at mixed sales similar to the February Sale, and we are confident that this live virtual format is the best option under the current difficult circumstances which we all continue to endure. In addition to promoting the February Sale to as many prospective buyers as possible our bloodstock sales team will liaise with vendors with regard to the requirements of the live virtual sale model.”

Details of the revised Tattersalls February sale format are as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 4 – Friday, Feb. 5, sale starting at 10 a.m. both days.

* All lots to be offered live as cataloged but without being present at Tattersalls Park Paddocks.
* No horses, vendors or purchasers will be present at Tattersalls Park Paddocks.
* All bidding to be conducted live to auctioneers through the Tattersalls live internet bidding platform or telephone bidding via Tattersalls personnel.
* The Tattersalls February Sale catalog can be viewed online at www.tattersalls.com and on the Equineline iPad App.

Commenting on the additional Tattersalls mixed sale planned for March 31 and April 1, Edmond Mahony added;

“We already have an Ascot fixture scheduled for April 1 which almost certainly will have to be relocated to Newmarket and we felt it best to offer an extra day in recognition of the changes we have had to make to the forthcoming Tattersalls February Sale. As ever our priority is to respond to the requirements of all of our clients as best we can while continuing to provide a safe and vibrant market place.”

Royal Ascot Meet Extended To Include Seven Races Each Day In 2021

Following the success of last year's extended Royal Ascot program, Ascot Racecourse has announced that Her Majesty The Queen has graciously consented to approve the extension to seven races each day for the 2021 Royal Meeting (June 15 through 19).

Last year, the Copper Horse Stakes, the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes and the Golden Gates Stakes were added to the program and the Buckingham Palace Stakes was reinstated. These races have all been retained.

Her Majesty has also approved the naming of the Kensington Palace Stakes (0-105), a new handicap to be run over the Old Mile for 4-year-old and upwards fillies and mares. Kensington Palace, set in Kensington Gardens, has been a residence for Members of the Royal Family since the 17th century.

The 'Silver' versions of the Royal Hunt Cup and the Wokingham Stakes have not been retained and there will not be eight races on Saturday as there were in 2020.

Sir Francis Brooke Bt., Her Majesty's Representative at Ascot, said: “A positive that we drew from Royal Ascot 2020 was that the additional races presented more opportunities to participate and that this had been widely welcomed by owners, trainers, breeders and jockeys. We are delighted to be able to make this change permanent.”

The order of running in 2021 will be based on 2019. The schedule in 2020 reflected the late start of the Flat season which necessitated considerable changes, mainly related to the timing of the Newmarket and Epsom Classics.

In 2021, the races being permanently added will be run as the final races on each day. The exception will be on the Saturday, where the Golden Gates Handicap will be run as race six and the meeting will conclude, as is traditional, with the Queen Alexandra Stakes. The Queen Anne Stakes will return to its usual position, opening the Royal Meeting.

Prize money will be confirmed in advance of the early closing races in April and will be listed for now with holding values (based on 2020) in program book two.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot, added:

“The concept of extended cards last year was well received, and we are very pleased to be able to offer additional opportunities to the horsemen community, the public, broadcasters and media going forward.

“At this time, more than ever, the increased opportunity to win prize money and to generate more levy and domestic and overseas betting income is crucial.

“Following consultation with the BHA, we decided to remove the two reserve races and bring in another high-quality handicap, as we are actually reducing the number of races run by one from last year, where eight races were staged on the Saturday. It occurred to us that the Old (round) Mile course is only used twice during Royal Ascot and another race on this track would add to the variety on offer.

“Last year's extended cards were only possible by reducing some field sizes slightly, and because no overnight stabling was allowed under Covid-19 protocols.

“In order that field sizes can go up to their maximums again and with overnight stabling extremely important, we have commissioned extra temporary stabling to be built to the required high BHA standards.

“Royal Ascot is constantly evolving and has benefitted from many recent race additions and promotions and we are excited that the week will now be bigger and better for everyone.”
