Heartwood to Rancho San Miguel

Multiple stakes winner and graded placed Heartwood (Tapit–Maple Forest, by Forestry) will take up stud duties next year at Rancho San Miguel in California. He will stand the 2021 season for $2,500, live foal guarantee. The 6-year-old, who races for the partnership of Stuart Tsuimoto and David Bernsen, won the 2019 King Cotton S., as well as two other stakes races. He was second in the 2018 GIII Fall Highweight H. and third in that year’s GIII Mr. Prospector S.

Heartwood is expected to make two additional starts in graded company at Santa Anita in January before retiring to stud. He currently has eight wins from 33 starts and earnings of $486,891.

“We are excited to offer West Coast breeders a stallion prospect of this magnitude by North America’s most successful sire of the modern era,” said Rancho San Miguel owner and manager Tom Clark. “Not only does Heartwood hold distinction as Tapit’s only dirt stakes winner available in California, he boasts the same broodmare sire as North America’s leading freshman sire of 2020, Nyquist.”

Clark continued, “As a direct male descendant of the breed-shaping stallion A.P. Indy, he also complements our existing stallion roster, which includes sires from the Mr. Prospector, Relaunch and Storm Cat lines.”

Hollie Doyle Wins Three Lesters; Rides 150th Winner of the Season on Tuesday

Fresh off finishing third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year poll on Sunday, jockey Hollie Doyle, who rode her 150th winner of the season earlier in the day at Lingfield, won three awards at the virtual Lesters Awards on Tuesday evening. Named the Flat Jockey of the Year, as well as the Female Jockey of the Year and the Flat Jockey Special Recognition Winner, Doyle’s 150th winner was Darwell Lion (Ire) (The Last Lion {Ire}) in the fourth race. Doyle is the first female jockey to win Flat Jockey of the Year and only the second jockey to win three Lesters in a single year after Paul Hanagan in 2010. The awards were presented by the Professional Jockeys Association in association with Sky Sports Racing.

Hollie’s achievement in becoming only the second jockey in Lesters history to win three awards in a year, and becoming the first female jockey to be crowned Flat Jockey of the Year, should not be downplayed.

As well as overseeing improvements in the medical care of jockeys, including the expansion of on-course physiotherapy and offering one-to-one advice and support to jockeys who are hospitalised, his tireless and ongoing efforts to get us back racing whilst ensuring the health and safety of the sports participants, hasn’t gone unnoticed by our members and this was their way of saying thank you.”

In 2020, Doyle already broke her own record for most winners in a calendar year by a female jockey, as well as winning two races on QIPCO British Champions Day, among them her first Group 1 with Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the G1 British Champions Sprint S. Earlier in the year she was aboard Scarlet Dragon (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) for a first win by a female jockey at Royal Ascot. Doyle also became the first woman to ride a winner in the Longines International Jockeys Championship in Hong Kong earlier this month.

Doyle told Sky Sports Racing, “It’s great to get to 150. To get the 100 up was a relief, but to get 150 is different class–I didn’t think it would happen this year. The Group 1 on Champions Day is the biggest highlight of the year for me. Hopefully it will unlock a few doors for the future–it’s great to get it under my belt at such a young age.”

Another crack at the jockeys’ championship is in the cards in 2021. The 2020 The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year said, “I’ll give it a go. I’ll always be trying as hard as I can and I hope I can land in that position one day, whether it be next year or the year after I don’t know. The main thing is to try and keep people happy and ride as many winners as I can.”

Tina Mott Appointed To Saratoga WarHorse Board Of Directors

Saratoga WarHorse, a not-for-profit organization which uses retired Thoroughbred racehorses to work with service members and veterans who are suffering after experiencing trauma while in the military, today announced the appointment of veteran and Thoroughbred advocate Tina Mott to its Board of Directors effective this month.

A longtime supporter and volunteer with Saratoga WarHorse, Mott will work with the organization to further its mission of promoting the physical, mental and emotional health of veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress by providing a healing, equine assisted experience exclusively using retired thoroughbreds.

Mott has more than 35 years of experience in the Thoroughbred industry and is the wife of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott of Mott Thoroughbred Stables.

“We are thrilled to welcome Tina to the Saratoga WarHorse Board of Directors,” said U.S. Army veteran and Saratoga WarHorse Foundation Chief Executive Officer Allison Cherkosly, Ph.D. “Her intense passion for helping veterans, deep background in the thoroughbred industry and passion for the Saratoga WarHorse program make Tina an ideal leader for our organization. We look forward to working with Tina in this new capacity.”

Mott is a familiar presence within the organization having served as a volunteer during program sessions for several years. As a volunteer, she provides meals for the veteran participants and records their experience connecting with equine counterparts at Saratoga WarHorse's location in East Greenbush, NY, which is also home to the renowned thoroughbred rescue program ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption.

“I have always had the utmost respect and gratitude for our veterans, so I was thrilled that the animals that have given my family such a wonderful life could also contribute to the health and well-being of our veterans,” said Mott. “I look forward to working with Allison, my fellow board members and the Saratoga WarHorse team on growing this enriching and important program.”

Since its inception in 2013, Saratoga WarHorse has helped over 1,300 military veterans and service members move past their trauma by partnering them with retired thoroughbred racehorses and providing a new treatment approach vastly different than equine therapy or any existing treatments.

Saratoga WarHorse offers a one-time, three-day experience which culminates with each veteran and their Thoroughbred counterpart participating in a procedure called the “Connection Process.” This process can last anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes, and has been empirically proven to improve quality of life and reduce symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress and their negative impact. The organization also recently launched the Military Armed Forces and Racehorses Program, which is designed to assist military service members mobilized during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The immersive program, which is available at no cost to service members who were activated during the pandemic, is currently accepting enrollments from eligible Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard troops. Remington: Owner Danny Caldwell Celebrates 1,000th Career Victory At ‘Home Track’

Remington Park's all-time winningest owner, Danny Caldwell of Poteau, Okla., hit all kinds of milestones on Monday evening, including clinching at least a tie for top owner of the meet.

He was extremely close to clinching the owner title for himself, needing one more win to eliminate Steve Asmussen going into the ninth race. Caldwell's horse Hansens Mischief crossed the finish line first but was disqualified for bumping the runner-up Euromantic in the stretch. Now, Asmussen at 24 wins, must win with all three of his starters on closing day Tuesday, and Caldwell would have to lose with all five of his entrants for there to be a tie. If one Asmussen-owned horse loses, Caldwell, who already has 27 wins, would be the solo winner.

Caldwell has entered Popfly Two Six (9-2 morning line odds) in the third, Off Sixes (6-1) in the fourth, Touching Rainbows (9-2) in the seventh, Beauty Day (5-1) in the eighth and Something Super (6-1) in the ninth. Asmussen has horses in race one with Princess Asya (2-1), race four with Don't Forget (2-1) and race eight with Upgrade Me (5-2).

Caldwell, who has won 370 times at Remington Park, also won his 1,000th career race as a Thoroughbred owner on Monday afternoon, according to Equibase stats. That came with his first win of the day, taking the fifth with Unlawful Assembly (7-5) with jockey Ramon Vazquez riding for trainer Federico Villafranco. Vazquez has won for Caldwell 216 times at Remington, by far the most of any jockeys. Sophie Doyle was the winning rider aboard Forty Nine Model (3-1) in the eighth, Caldwell's 370th and 1,001st, respectively in those categories. Caldwell's Thoroughbred horses in his career have earned $19,714,997 from 4,904 starts.

“I really appreciate Remington Park for everything they've done for me and the horsemen,” said Caldwell. “I'm so glad I got 1,000 here. It's a pleasure to do it at my home track.”

Leading rider David Cabrera also had a stellar day, winning four times to surpass his all-time best mark at Remington Park. He now is four wins away from 100 for the meet with eight mounts remaining Tuesday. His 96 wins this meet also is a personal best in winning his last three titles here. He had 95 in 2018 and 83 last year when he was top jock.

Cabrera's horse's earnings surpassed the $2 million mark for the third year in a row. He had a best $2,377,944 in 2018; $2,159,916 for 2019, and stands at $2,026,684 for 2020 going into Tuesday's races. His four winners Monday, Martz's Mae ($4.40 to win) in the second, Absaroka ($5) in the sixth, Shifty Henry ($3.60) in the seventh and Tell Me Boo Boo ($3.40) in the 10th, and a fifth place horse in another race gave his mounts $28,104 for the day.

Also Tuesday, Jearl “Ace” Hare hung up his tack as a trainer, sending out the final horse of his career – Sandy Crest in the 10th. In his racing career, the trainer, since 1991, had 2,142 starters, 228 winners, 249 seconds and 279 thirds for earnings of $2.96 million.

The final race date of the 2020 Thoroughbred Season takes place Tuesday, Dec. 22, with the first of 10 races underway at Noon-Central.
