$425,000 Guarantee In Gulfstream Park West Rainbow 6 Wednesday

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $425,000 Wednesday at Gulfstream Park West in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the 15^th straight racing day Sunday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $629.86.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Big Thorn wins 'off turf' Juvenile Turf
Alex and Joanne Lieblong's Big Thorn benefited from a perfect trip, as well as the morning rains that forced turf races to be run over the sloppy main track, to score a dominating victory in Sunday's $60,000 Juvenile Turf at Gulfstream Park West.

The seven-furlong Juvenile Turf for Florida-bred 2-year-olds, which was originally scheduled to be run at a mile on the turf course, co-headlined Sunday's program with the $60,000 Millions Filly and Mare Turf for Florida-bred fillies and mares.

Big Thorn, a main-track-only entrant who had broken his maiden by five lengths in his previous start, raced in third behind dueling pacesetters Hot Blooded and Fulmini, who put up fractions of 22.99 and 45.77 seconds for the first half-mile. Jockey Paco Lopez made a three-wide sweep to the lead leaving the turn into the homestretch aboard the home-bred colt, who drew off to a notch a 4 ½-length victory.

Fulmini, who was ridden by Edgard Zayas, finished second, 9 ¼ lengths clear of Castle King. Big Thorn, the 2-1 favorite, ran seven furlongs in 1:23.23.

“We were fortunate that the race came off and it helped shortening up to seven-eighths. I didn't expect him to be quite as close as he was. Paco told me he put him into the race early but after that it was all over,” trainer David Fawkes said. “He had so much horse through the whole race. He really, really likes the horse. When he got off the horse he said, 'Damn, this is a nice horse.'”

Big Thorn finished second in his Sept. 26 debut at Gulfstream in an open maiden special weight race before dominating Florida-bred rivals back-to-back.

“He ran a little green last time, but this time much, much more professional. He acted up on the van coming over, he did a lot of things last time he ran that could have jeopardized him but it obviously didn't,” Fawkes said. “We'll just wait and look for the next spot, that's all. I don't like to look too far ahead.”

Windylea Farm LLC's Thissmytime ($11) relished the sloppy going while registering an easy victory in the Millions Filly and Mare Preview. Like Big Thorn, Thissmytime was a main-track-only entrant in the seven-furlong race that was originally scheduled for 7 ½ furlongs on turf.

Ridden by Joe Bravo, who captured the $60,000 Millions Turf Preview on Saturday's GPW card, Thissmytime closely tracked pacesetter Picara, who showed the way into the far turn after running the first quarter of a mile in 22.45 seconds. Thissmytime moved to the lead entering the turn into the homestretch during a 44.45-second half-mile and drew off powerfully and comfortably to register her first stakes victory.

The Kathleen O'Connell-trained 3-year-old daughter of Carpe Diem ran seven furlongs in a sharp 1:21.40. Starship Nala closed to finish clear of R Prerogative, the 9-5 favorite.

Miguel Vasquez rode four winners on Sunday's program, propelling him into a 39-39 tie with defending champion Edgard Zayas in the race for the jockey's title with three cards remaining in the Gulfstream Park West meet. Vasquez scored aboard Terry's Dream ($13) in Race 3, Lavi ($5.40) in Race 4, Walkoff ($5.20) in Race 5 and Itsmyluckygirl ($5) in Race 8.

However, Vasquez also completed his final day of riding at Gulfstream Park West and is scheduled to return to competition on Wednesday, Dec. 2, the opening day of the 2020-2021 Championship Meet.

Rohan Crichton, who saddled Itsmyluckygirl for her victory, holds a 17-15 lead over Antonio Sano in the race for the trainer's title. Saffie Joseph Jr., the defending titlist, has had 14 winners.

Andrew Wyeth’s ‘Over the Hill’ Commands $109,250 to Top Sporting Art Auction

Andrew Wyeth’s Over the Hill, a watercolor painted by Wyeth in 1973 that remained in his personal collection until 2006, brought $109,250, including buyer premium, to headline Sunday’s eighth annual Sporting Art Auction, a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington held virtually on Sunday afternoon.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bidding on this year’s auction of 188 high-quality lots representing fine sporting art, American paintings and sculpture by renowned artists was conducted online and via phone. Gross sales for the Sporting Art Auction totaled $1,625,945.

LeRoy Neiman’s Satchmo, an oil portrait of famed jazz musician Louis Armstrong signed, dated ’61 and inscribed ‘Satch,’ sold for the day’s second-highest price of $103,500, including buyer premium. Bringing the auction’s third-highest price of $72,000, including buyer premium, was Henry Stull’s Domino with Jockey Up, an oil portrait signed and dated 1900. This depiction of Domino, a famed sprinter and breed-shaping sire, was part of the recent Tales from the Turf: The Kentucky Horse, 1925-1950 exhibit at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville.

TBA Annual General Meeting Held

The Annual General Meeting of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association was held online for the first time on Sunday. TBA Chairman Julian Richmond-Watson detailed several key strategic priorities, while also acknowledging the challenges created by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to the UK Thoroughbred industry. Five 2021 focal points for the TBA Board of Trustees and executive team are as follows:

Resolving issues arising from the UK’s exit from the EU; to include working with industry partners at home and abroad to ensure best possible outcomes for the industry, its people, trade and horse movement.
Maintaining and developing relationships with key industry and government figures who can potentially influence and support TBA activities.
Providing further direct support for breeders, including development of the Great British Bonus scheme.
Participating and influencing industry decisions on prize-money, ensuring racing is adequately funded at every level, while maintaining the appeal and competitiveness of Britain’s top-level races globally.
Improving the TBA’s digital services, including developing and launching a new e-learning platform to provide easy and affordable access to industry training.

Several positive developments in 2020 include: the TBA gaining approval from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) for the Great British Bonus scheme which has already paid out over £1 million in prize-money. The quick adaption of communications and services for members through the coronavirus crises was also recognised as a success.

“British breeders need more support,” said Richmond-Watson. “GBB [the Great British Bonus] is a great start, but if racecourses wish to run the size of the programme they desire, they will need us to maintain and produce more foals on the ground and that will only happen if breeders feel confident about the future.”

Also during the meeting, the term of the incumbent chairman was increased from six years to eight after a special resolution was adopted, with upcoming challenges ranging from Brexit, COVID-19, prize-money issues, and Levy reform. A new membership category was also created, the associate subscription, allowing discounted or free access to TBA courses and events for £60 per year. In addition, Laundry Cottage Stud owner Colin Bryce and Kate Sigsworth of West Moor Stud were elected to the Board of Trustees. Baffert Unveils Another Into Mischief Monster

With likely Horse of the Year Authentic (Into Mischief) recently retired to stud, the Bob Baffert barn wasted no time unveiling its next speedy superstar by the nation’s leading sire as CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm LLC’s Life is Good (Into Mischief) demolished his competition to become a no-brainer ‘TDN Rising Star’. The bay prepped for this with a head-turning 1:00 flat (1-of-51) gate breeze last Saturday (XBTV Video), and drifted up to 1-5 at the off after spending much of the betting cycle at 1-9. Zipping off to lead them by open lengths through speedy splits of :21.80 and :44.84, he was always in complete control and streaked home 9 1/2 lengths clear in 1:15.50 while flashing similar brilliance to the same ownership group’s undefeated monster Nashville (Speightstown). Fellow firster Wipe the Slate (Nyquist) was second best.

The winner, who was a $525,000 KEESEP yearling, is bred on the same cross as MGISW and promising young sire Practical Joke (Into Mischief). His dam, herself a $435,000 September buy, never won in five tries but hit the board in maiden special weights in both Kentucky and Arkansas. She has a yearling filly by Blame and was bred back to Candy Ride (Arg).

Life Is Good’s second dam is SW and MGISP Bonnie Blue Flag (Mineshaft), who sold for $1.5 million in 2011 but just $15,000 last November in foal to California Chrome at the age of 12 after having little success with her produce on the track. Bonnie Blue Flag is a half to MGISW and group producer Diamondrella (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}).
