Grade 2-Placed Bob And Jackie Tops Monday’s Trade At Keeneland November Sale

Bob and Jackie, a stakes-winning, 4-year-old son of Twirling Candy who was third in the Oct. 3 Grade 2 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita, was the top-priced horse of Monday's eighth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale when he sold to Price/Recio Bloodstock, agent for Calvin Nguyen, for $190,000.

Bob and Jackie, who was supplemented to the November Sale, was consigned by St George Sales, agent. Out of the Eskendereya mare Fateer, he has won four of eight starts, including the Wickerr, Let It Ride and Eddie Logan, and earned $209,551.

With the lone purchase, Price/Recio Bloodstock was the session's leading buyer.

On Monday, Keeneland sold 256 horses for $3,797,300, for an average of $14,833 and a median of $8,000.

Cumulatively through eight sessions, 1,768 horses have sold for $144,012,000, for an average of $81,455 and a median of $32,000.

Also supplemented to the sale and consigned by St George Sales, agent, was Alex Joon, a 3-year-old Flatter colt who sold to Donald K. Strickland for $120,000. Second in a Churchill Downs allowance race on Oct. 29, Alex Joon scored his first win at Churchill in December 2019.

Convinced, a 5-year-old daughter of Tiznow whose dam, Tap of the Day, by Pulpit, is a full sister to leading sire Tapit, sold to Four Star Sales for $85,000. Vinery Sales, agent, consigned the mare, who is in foal to Maclean's Music. Her family includes champion Rubiano as well as Grade 2 winners Madefromlucky and Dubleo. 

McMahon and Hill Bloodstock, agent, paid $77,000 for Well Hello, a 5-year-old daughter of Quality Road carrying her first foal by Outwork. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, she is out of the winning Not For Love mare Just Say Goodbye and from the family of Grade 2 winner Wicapi and such as stakes winners as Water Cannon and Jet Run.

The next two top-priced horses were weanlings from the first crops of their respective sires: a filly by Free Drop Billy for $72,000 and a filly by City of Light for $70,000.

Spendthrift Farm purchased the daughter of Free Drop Billy, who was consigned by Vinery Sales, agent. Out of the winning Stormy Atlantic mare Help the Children, she is from the family of multiple Grade 3 winner Humble Clerk.

VIP Farm acquired the filly by City of Light, who is out of winner Union Prayer, by Dixie Union. Consigned by Vinery Sales, agent for Spendthrift Farm, she is from the family of Grade 1 winner Malibu Prayer and Grade 2 winners Tap Dance, Valid and Silverside.

The session's leading consignor was Lane's End, agent, which sold 31 horses for $425,200.

Bob and Jackie Tops Keeneland Monday

A pair of racehorse prospects offered by St. George Sales late in the day were the lone lots to bring six figures during Monday’s session of the Keeneland November sale, with graded-stakes placed Bob and Jackie (Twirling Candy) (hip 3017F) bringing top price of $190,000 when selling to bloodstock agents Grey Price and Mike Recio on behalf of California owner Calvin Nguyen. Bred and raced by Zayat Stables, the 4-year-old is a three-time stakes winner and recently finished third in the Oct. 3 GII City of Hope Mile S. Bob and Jackie was supplemented to the auction and, following his quick trip to the Bluegrass, will be shipping back to the Southern California barn of trainer Richard Baltas.

“He just ran a great race in that Grade II recently and he should get better with age,” Recio said of the colt’s appeal. “He’s had a little bit of an interrupted campaign, but he’s doing great right now. Rich really loves the horse and wanted to get him back. He thinks he has a big future and Calvin is a longtime client of his.”

Recio continued, “The horse showed a lot of class. He vanned out here and he didn’t get here until seven this morning. There were a lot of hoops to jump through to get him here. He showed like a champ and did his thing. And now it’s time to go home and keep on going.”

Also supplemented to the sale, Alex Joon (Flatter) (hip 3017E) sold for $120,000 to Donald Strickand. A $250,000 Keeneland September buy in 2018, the dark bay colt won once in four starts for Zayat Stables and trainer Steve Asmussen. He was most recently runner-up in a Churchill Downs allowance Oct. 29.

During Monday’s session of the November sale, Keeneland sold 256 horses for $3,797,300. The average was $14,833 and the median was $8,000. With 36 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 12.33%.

Through eight sessions, 1,768 horses have sold for $144,012,000, for an average of $81,455 and a median of $32,000.

“I think the market has been very fair,” Recio, who sells under the South Point Sales Agency banner, said. “We are very blessed that we are having sales at all. The quality has not dropped at all in price–whatever is termed quality. I think we are in a revolving door, same old same old right now. I think some people need to lighten their load broodmare-wise. Hopefully stud fees can remain neutral for a couple of years. This is a cycle and I think the market was due a dip regardless of COVID. Owners not being able to attend races and enjoy themselves probably has a little bit of an effect. And I think a lot of people are cleaning house. It’s not like any other dip we’ve had in the market. Until we can get travel back so we can get some more international flavor for the lower to middle market and even have some lighter restrictions in the U.S., I think we’re in for a hard time. I don’t think it’s going to go away right away.”

Four Star Sales purchased the highest-priced mare during Monday’s session of the November sale, going to $85,000 to secure the 5-year-old Convinced (Tiznow) (hip 2961). Out of an unraced sister to Tapit, the also unraced mare is in foal to Maclean’s Music and was consigned by Vinery Sales. A filly by Free Drop Billy, also consigned by Vinery Sales, was the session’s top-priced foal when selling for $72,000 to Spendthrift Farm, which stands her Grade I-winning first-crop sire. The weanling (hip 2656) is out of Help the Children (Stormy Atlantic).

The Keeneland November sale continues through Wednesday with sessions beginning each day at 10 a.m.

Highflyer Bloodstock Strikes for Arqana Autumn Toppers

The second day of the Arqana Autumn Sale kicked off with horses-in-training on Monday. Although the catalogue was not as deep as 2019’s record-breaking sale, 77% of the 160 horses offered found new homes. The gross was €3,050,000 for the 124 sold and two horses were co-toppers at €200,000, with Highflyer Bloodstock snapping up both offerings. In 2019, the highest price was €420,000. The average dropped to €24,597

(-29%) and the median fell to €11,000 (-21%). In addition, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic also presented some challenges, but the sale was conducted in the new open air ring, just like this past Friday’s Arqana Autumn Flat Yearling Sale.

Tessa Greatrex and David Powell of Highflyer Bloodstock first picked up lot 423, Tax for Max (Ger) (Maxios {GB}), for €200,000. They bought the 3-year-old colt on behalf of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, who are sending the colt to Willie Mullins. Previously trained by Henk Grewe and offered by Gestut Ohlerweiherhof, the dark bay is rated 109. Tax for Max finished fourth in the G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn Union-Rennen.

Just 11 lots later, the winning gelding Houx Gris (Fr) (Gris de Gris {Ire}) (lot 434) caught their eye again to equal the price of Tax for Max. Sold by Jean-Marie Callier, the hurdler was trained by Sylvain Dehez. Successful in his latest start at Auteuil, he will race in the colurs of Jared Sullivan.

“We’ve bought him for Jared Sullivan,” commented David Powell. “He’ll go to England where he’ll be trained by Paul Nicholls.”

Overall, seven lots brought six figures, with Horse Racing Advisory’s Hubert Barbe and Charlie Swan purchasing three of them, led by Hercule du Seuil (Fr) (Saddler Maker {Ire}) (lot 464) at €185,000. Runner-up in his lone start over hurdles at Strasbourg on Oct. 21, the Michael Seror-consigned 3-year-old colt is from the same family as Grade 2 winner Etoile du Seuil (Fr) (Network {Ger}). The duo also snapped up the dual Flat-winning gelding Goven (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}) (lot 456) from Alain Couetil for €175,000 and lot 471, Head Law (Fr) (Network {Ger}) at €150,000. The latter won over 2300 metres on Nov. 6 and is a half-brother to Grade 2 scorer GA Law (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}). The HRA quintet was completed by Gaetan Taupin’s Hawai Game (Fr) (Diamond Boy {Fr}) (lot 461) for €90,000 and lot 465, the €60,000 Gold Conti (Fr) (Network {Ger}) from the draft of Arnaud Chaille-Chaille.

“The market is difficult but we bought them at the right price,” said Charlie Swan. “They are all going to start over hurdles and we hope that some of them will go down the chasing route afterwards, we just have to be lucky. The French system is really very well done, the horses are broken in early and progress race by race afterwards from a young age.”

The final two seven-figure lots will both head Down Under, with listed winner Arapaho (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) bringing €140,000 from Jim Clarke of Clarke Bloodstock and Avenue Bloodstock for the Australian trainer Bjorn Baker. Hailing from the draft of trainer Andre Fabre, lot 418 is out of stakes winner Alzubra (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Consigned by Wertheimer et Frere, Flambeur (Mizzen Mast) (lot 427), who won the Listed La Coupe de Marseille, is bound for the yard of Matthew Smith after hammering for €100,000.

At the end of Monday’s sale, Arqana President and Executive Director Freddy Powell said, “Demand for the horses-in-training was not as strong today as it was last year. We cannot ignore the impact of COVID-19 on the business of many owners, nor the absence of certain buyers due to the movement restrictions caused by the pandemic. We will now focus on the young jumps

prospects and the National Hunt breeding day.”
